"There are many people in the industry that know nothing about games."

He's right you know.
Are you one of them user?
Which of today's devs is he talking about?

This happens in every industry.

I'm not in the industry. I pirate everything.

Can we get a collection of the bad-ass things this man said and did?

I´ll start.
>Told Microsoft to fuck off when you can to offer a deal to buy Nintendo."I'd rather see my company die than to be in the hands of Americans".

Yamauchi made him host the Virtual Boy booth at E3 all by himself after it had already failed at retail. Yamauchi didn't just want to scapegoat Yokoi for the Virtual Boy, he wanted him publicly humiliated.

This should be absurdly obvious to anyone.
You really think the PR guy cares much about games?
The advertisers? The markerting teams?
Quality control? HR? Finance? Legal?
Half the artists probably don't care either.
Half the programmers probably don't care.

"people who play rpgs are depressed gamers who like to sit alone in their dark rooms and play slow games - Yamauchi.

He probably killed Junpei Gokoi but more importantly did not give Miyamoto complete creative freedom.

I feel like EA and Microsoft fit the bill. At least activision at least undertood the value of a game like Crash Bandicoot. Microsoft and EA have so many squandered IP, we'll never see another Banjo

The actual developers, usually the artists, programmers, and designers are the ones that keep in touch with games themselves.

The publishers, marketers, jews, basically all the nobodies in suits are the ones that know nothing about games themselves because when it comes to the business side of things, all that shit doesn't matter. It's all about that $$$.

Kinda debatable if stupid or cool but he totally fucked over the, at the time worlds largest company, Sony, by shafting their deal to create a Nintendo PlayStation (after finding out Sonys´ devious plan)

This is kind of the best. Instead they went to the western company Philips, Sony´s direct rival.

>I made some money and therefore I am qualified to make statements about human nature
Thank God for people who are actually interested in things

There is zero reason to make fun games, you just need to make marketing campaigns for fun games. The game itself comes second, or even third.

he's not wrong

>The first product launched by the new company was a line of individually portioned instant rice. Add water and - presto! It was a dismal failure. Yamauchi then opened a "love hotel," with rooms rented by the hour. The business was, for Yamauchi, a personal passion; it was said that he was one of his own best customers (his infidelities were well known - even by his wife, who ignored them).

>A taxi company Yamauchi started, Daiya, thrived, although he grew tired of negotiating with powerful taxi-driver unions, which demanded high salaries and expensive benefits for their members. he soon folded that company and closed the doors of the love hotel. he planned more changes as he move Nintendo again, this time to a larger building, a three-story structure of beige bricks with black door and window frames and bars on the windows.

>Yamauchi had concluded that he wanted new businesses that could take advantage of one of Nintendo's strongest assets, its karuta distribution system, which reached into toy and department stores throughout Japan. Nintendo's roots were in entertainment, and there would be no more rice or taxis or love hotels. Yamauchi set Nintendo on a new course as an entertainment company.

without this man, vidya would have died with the atari and Sup Forums would never have existed

>let's just ignore the european home computer market

this article was written before many of you were born

Yes, with such great pre-86 games like....

has europe ever made any videogames worth playing?

even today I can think of none

Everybody working at nintendo currently

>even today I can think of none

Witcher 3?

games were better under yamauchi, even though he never played any of them, perhaps fear of his wrath made the developers work better

he specifically wanted the gamecube to be indigo like his suit and requested the DS have two screens

imagine if he made nintendo directs, you can hear the passion in his voice
youtube.com/watch?v=W4WlniHylrU

>good european game
>weeabo themed

witcher 3 does nothing original, is extremely average and would never be remembered if not for its graphics

nintendo and japan has done so so so much to shape the game industry, its like the rest of the world isn't even trying

Europe as in the EU or Europe as defined by its subcontinental borders?
Either of these has plenty of examples, but you get to include European Russia, Ukraine and the like with the latter definition. This adds a fair few games.

>"21st century games have no need for high specs. If the business requires such human wave tactics, then all game companies will simply sink."

>"They use high capacity to flow out sound and visuals, in an attempt to give their games a grand presence. But the most crucial part of a game is its contents. Even if you have sound and visuals, a bad game is still a bad game."

>"Huge businesses fear failure, which is why they only take safe bets. In other words, they're fine with 7 failures so long as they have 8 successes. But for medium and small businesses, 14 misses can be made up for with a single hit. For medium and small businesses like ours, we have the benefit of taking bold risks. We have nothing to fear from big businesses' half-hearted strategies."

>plenty of examples
yeah? lets hear them

Unfortunately there's nothing but big businesses now so there's no real innovation anymore. When was the last time a new genre of games was made?

*crickets*

nintendo still innovates

There this exciting new genre called "video games as a service." It comes with gambling options.

Daddy :(

>chinese culture
>weaboo

Well, if we go by continental borders rather than EU borders (ie ukraine, european russia, etc included)
Space Rangers 2 or HD
STALKER series
Gothic 1 and 2
Albion
Drakensang TDE/ROT
Witcher Series
Realms of Arkania series
Arx Fatalis
The Settlers series pre ubisoft
ADOM
DOS 1/2, even Divinity 2 is worth a look at
There's just a few examples

>shogun
>chinese

>google this

>"High spec games are no good. If everyone were to do this, then all the world's makers will go bankrupt. People will grow tired of these cyclical blockbuster games. The essence of games is to continuously develop new play, and make each game more complete then the last. But even so, game makers continue to pump out games, II and III, now VII, VIII, and IX. Creators are driven into a corner, pushed into a shift in quality. Companies that say they're fine with just aiming at Japan, and push out VII, VIII, and IX's are doomed. It's because of this that the games industry is falling into danger. If you have a counterargument, then by all means bring it up. But no one has ever directly come with a refutation, they simply talk in the shadows. It's that sort of character that's emblematic of the industry's crisis."

Hmm, I wonder who this could be aimed at.

Why did he not trust Miyamoto fully

so I was right, nothing major, nothing memorable
are you even trying europe?

grezzo2 was memorable, but won't redefine gaming
youtube.com/watch?v=Lqdbi16C7xU

>Nothing major, nothing memorable
Oh, you're a baiting retard. Got it.

not real

because miyamoto is a bit nuts
who else could have come up with the idea for pikmin

He saved baseball in Seattle and for that reason alone I will always buy Nintendo consoles

it's not bait
europe has contributed very little to videogames
is there such a thing as a european game console?

at least russia made tetris

japan and usa did all the hard lifting

...

" At least activision at least undertood the value of a game like Crash Bandicoot."
They shoved poor Crash into forgettable mobile games and left the series to rot. Remakes mean nothing.

>is there such a thing as a european game console?
nobody in europe really gave a fuck about consoles for a long, long time, it was always a turf of computers
when parents bitched about video games, they never said "video games", they said "computer games"

and the fact that you're too ignorant to have played any actually good european games says more about you than european games

...

>good european games
things that dont exist

just admit vidya would be dead if japan and usa stopped making games

"With makers in the position to receive profits from software once it is sold, if the person who bought it wants to sell it or give it away, personally, I think, isn't that their freedom? Software companies should just make software with longevity that users will not grow tired of quickly and sell."

tell me more about those "great" american games

>games were better under yamauchi, even though he never played any of them, perhaps fear of his wrath made the developers work better

I believe what Yamauchi did when very small teams could make Nintendo's biggest games was pit the development teams to outperform eachother. So teams under Miyamoto and teams under Yokoi were essentially competing against each other to make better games. At one of the GDC even Iwata when he was at HAL making games for Nintendo said he saw Miyamoto as a rival to beat.

It's probably something that couldn't happen now that dev teams are a lot bigger and there's more collaboration required.

do europeans even understand game design?

>moving the goalpost

more than amerimutss that's for sure

>If the DS succeeds, we will rise to heaven, but if it fails we will sink to hell.

ok, I forgot all about them, typically england is not what comes to mind when thinking of europe

they even voted to leave the EU

"Market research? Why would we do something like that? Nintendo created the market. We have no need to research it."

"It's weird to be going into your 30s or 40s, and still hang around Akihabara playing video games."

just pointing out how your european game has nothing european about it

>typically england is not what comes to mind when thinking of europe
confirmed retard
why does that matter?

nobody thought the DS would succeed
it has to be one of the riskiest gambles of all time
you throw a underpowered handheld with 2 screens and pen at devs and say "make game"

and then they did it again with the wii, and kinda with the switch

Multiple were listed before. If you're a brainlet to the point that you don't see the impact gothic had, or consider gothic 1/2 good games, there is nothing I can do for you
Or are you just merely pretending to be retarded?

i remember when everyone was more hyped for the PSP. i bet they all feel like fucking retards in hindsight.

Europe made the greatest twin-stick shooter ever made.

"There are many people in Europe that know nothing about games."

I remember being the only person in my school who saw the potential of the ds touchscreen

and after wario ware twisted for the gba, I knew the wii would be an instant hit, too bad I didn't know how to buy stocks back then

EA 100% for sure has lost touch with gaming and is destroying everything they touch and or acquire. Sadly they are too rich for their own good and small good dev studios get eaten up by them and the money they flash at them. Shits a fact EA has single handedly ruined or acquired every game I love and locked that shit away in a deep basement never to be seen again.
>Dungeon Keeper = MIA
>Command & Conquer = KIA
>KOTOR = MIA
>Battlefield = KIA
>Star Wars Battle Front = KIA

i still lose my shit seeing the total sales of the system, shit skyrocketed with the DS Lite
