Why are the character designs in SF so classic?

Limits of technology on which they first appeared necessitated a clean, simple aesthetic for readability. Also, Capcom has had some of the best artists work for them throughout the years.

A lot of anime deigns are pretty lack luster. I recognize sol, potemkin, and a few others by sight but if you posted a random persona, melty, blazblue, or some random mugen things together I wouldn't be able to tell their names or differences unless they were really far out there to only fit in persona or whatever.

Tekken and kof have a mix of great memorable designed characters and some forgettable fodder and terrible redesigns too. Dragunov, jin, hworang, heihachi and kazuya are fantastically designed but had terrible redesigns at one point. Kof has terry, athena, geese, rock, benimaru and iori.

Another big mention goes to half the mk roster and skullgirls.
