I believe you have to go to old yharnam first before going to forbidden woods so you still have some hours of good game
After that you'll have to take the forbidden woods to proceed. It feels unfinished and rushed
The first 4~5 hours to me were the best then it's full autism until the DLC later on (before you finish the game unless you want NG+ DLC)

Old Yharnam IS optional but it is ALSO the progressive route to take so you don't end up somewhere more powerful then you should be.

It is recommended only experienced players skip it, for your first playthrough you should definitely go through it.

The only complaint I really have is that sometimes the optional and mandatory shit kinda got mixed up and had me thrown off on a first playthrough, like your real first boss could be Papa G instead of Cleric Beast and you can fuck up your gameplan a little if you waste time going down a dead end route

the worst part of bloodborne is that it doesn't tell you basic stuff

It's a fucking pain to start a new game because your health is very fragile and you are already used to take multiple hits and still recover
The game becomes a lot easier after health level 29~32 and 25~30 strenght

Bloodborne was the first Soulsborne game I beat, and I did it with only 26 health and 30 endurance.
For most players the only requirement is 20/20 health/endurance

Souls game difficulty is directly dependent on your experience with games in the series and only barely on the mechanics themselves. It's why people who've beaten multiple Souls games can go back to DaS and shit on the "unbeatable" first boss with a busted sword - because they've already mastered the gameplay. They've always been kinda bad about direction and shit, but at worst you've just had to really work for it, not get hopelessly lost or screw yourself into a corner.
