It's a testament both to the writing of the game and Robert Baratheons voice acting that despite being a reprehensible human being it's still almost impossible to hate him. You want to take his side even though there should be no logical reason to do so.

Well he was getting cuckolded for years by his best mate. And he became geniunely remorseful after the Blotchkin quest.

Thing is he's a very well written character. Arguably the best in Witcher 3 with a perfect voicecast too. My interest the story certainly dipped after he left the scene. Still love the game.
