it was nomuras decision to use a real world designer to do the clothes for the game as part of the "fantasy based on reality" motif the game has, and they got a real japanese fashion line called Roen (of which momura wears a lot of their clothes) to design the clothes for the main party plus regis and cor, so they had to keep them as the default outfits for contractual reasons, they also did this suit Noctis has too. The clothes themselves are based on Nomura's prototype designs from 2006/2008 but made by an actual clothes designer.
