No they were best when they actually felt unique like what Reach did.

This, I know it gets flak for some reason but Reach had it figured out with the perk system and it added variety to the gameplay.

There is zero reason future halo games couldn't have followed in reach's path and kept elites in invasion and custom games. It throws elite fags a bone and keeps spartan fags happy.
