Why was there never a sequel?

And more importantly, why was there a revival of (inferior) grid-based dungeon crawling instead?

I mean there even has been a sequel to Deus Ex recently.
They are not the same category, but similar at least.

Just about the most underrated game ever.

Is there a way to make Arx Libertatis (the source port) run more efficiently? Because it CHUGS on my computer, which is weird because I don't have ANY problems on other games from the 2000s.

probably because niche game/genre
i don't think it sold well
also ubisoft holds the rights for dark messiah
so you're stuck now with dishonored or prey (or neither considering both undersold)

>dark messiah

completely unrelated IP

Have you tried switching the renderer?
For some machines the OpenGL implementation might work better/worse.

Underworld Ascendant is coming out this year. That's basically as close as you're ever going to get to a new Arx Fatalis.

The grid-based bullshit was revived solely because it's much easier to develop and shit out quickly. I swear to god nothing is more intolerable than that square-dancing combat system. Old games at least had the excuse for hardware limitations.

You niggers got the wrong game sounds like

>Underworld Ascendant is coming out this year. That's basically as close as you're ever going to get to a new Arx Fatalis.

Underworld Ascendant will feature a hub with portals but you are probably still right.

I just see Underworld Ascendant as a successor to Ultima Underworld 2 rather than Ultima Underworld 1, which is fine by me.

man this game controlled worse than tank controls from the ps1 era

What was the problem with it?
It's pretty simple.

Keep an eye out for Monomyth, friendo

i'm not talking about Arx Fatalis I'm answering OP's question about why those grid based dungeon crawls are back in force

Just clunky, hated playing it as a rogue

it wasn't that great honestly. The story was shit and gameplay was very clunky. It had some interesting ideas but the execution was lacking. The overall atmosphere was the best thing about it.

It took some getting used to for me, but after like an hour or two it was nearly second nature.

But I do agree that playing as a rouge/stealth is probably not advisable.

>rouge
ROGUE. ROGUE!

yeah, I don't have time to correct spelling mistakes, dude

like this game.
I like the weird magic system.
I like the setting (weird post-apocalyptic fantasy).

A follow-up (or a "good follow-up") would in my opinion be hard to do though, in part due to the obvious (been a while since the last game, which wasn't even that successful, and was made by a studio that is now a subsidiary of Bethesda and there could be a sort of conflict in terms of marketing/could-compete with Elder Scrolls). and the less obvious (likelyhood of different opinions regarding what was "good" about the original)..

it's not about a sequel per se, just a revival of ultima underworld games, I presume?

I will NEVER be OK with the magic system. I think it COULD have been excellent, but it requires too much precision. There are some spells I've still never been able to cast because I can't get the runes EXACTLY how the game wants them to be drawn.

Underworld Ascendant is coming out this year if it isn't delayed.

you can pre-cast spells to use them later

The fact that I have to try like 30 fucking times for some of that shit just makes it not worth it. I just do offense heavy builds in the game and fuck everything else. Or just use the chicken cheat.
