Savant implies he is only good at martial arts and nothing else, whereas Wesker covers multiple fields, with hand-to-hand combat just being part of his training that he knew he should perfect if he knows what's good for him.

Can I play Code Veronica X having little knowledge of the RE lore beyond what happens in the first one on ps1 and the generals of 2 and 3, i.e umbrella provokes a virus outbreak in raccoon city for reasons I don't remember and then the city's nuked?

There are bits and pieces that require some knowledge of RE1 and 2, but it's pretty much a self-contained story, so dive in.

I think I'm all right with 1, but I only did the first Leon route of 2 and left it at that and that was some time ago so I don't remember much of what little story I got out of it beyond the G virus outbreak.
I'm interested in Code Veronica because it's so divisive for its story (apparently it's good barring Wesker but I'm all in for the cheesy parts), and I really like the gothic look I got from some footage.

If you had played Claire's route it would have been better, as she is the protag of CV, but mostly to get the feel for her, as far as info goes it's only important to know she is Chris' little sister, chasing after him while he chases Umbrella.

Honestly, they blew their load too early with Wesker and Umbrella. Feels like the series has lacked direction and a overarching villain ever since. Wesker had been built up and was doing shit in the background the entire series, and then he's just gone by the middle of it
