This is a common misconception. Building isn't hard at all in Fortnite - it just requires reflexes. 99% of the time you're building the exact same 4 walls -> ramp on a neverending cycle. In the rare instances that you get into close range it takes more thought to counter-build, but beyond that there's almost no skill or decision making involved: just muscle memory.

People like being part of something with 99 other people in, even if only temporarily. It taps into that Battle Royale and recently Hunger Games genre.

It's obviously a winning formula to get people hooked, may as well ask why gambling is so popular "since you usually don't win".
