Don't know why but I've been watching a boatload of clips from Mass Effect 1 - 3 recently

Was it ever elaborated what the Reapers motivation was intended to be before Karpyshyn left and they had to rush the game out with the retarded motivation?

Ummm yah they harvest your blood for enegy doofus

Wasn't there something with the dark energy plot that started with ME2 and went nowhere and the reapers trying to rescue the universe from being consumed by dark matter or something? I forgot.
I faintly remember that the dark energy plot was only slightly less retarded than the starchild.

From what I remember, Karpyshyn was the one who came up with the idea of the dark energy storyline that Tali very briefly mentioned in her mission in 2. It got dropped, obviously.

Dont remember either but your right there was supposed to be some plot device about the reapers using dark matter

mass effect use caused the dark energy shit they introduced in 2, reapers kill all civilization that reached the point of being able to use it.

Yeah, it had something to do with the planet you find tali and it's sun. Tali is there to find out why the sun burnt out early?

There's quite a few references to dark energy in mass effect 2

Original conceit was that the universe was slowly collapsing due to excessive use of dark energy. The reapers cycle was created to manage the growth of organic civilization to a sustainable level. The details of this were never fully released iirc.

>watches clips
>doesnt understand story of three games from clips

maybe play them instead.

Same thing with all eldritch horrors
"Their plans are beyond our comprehension"
Meaning they can do spoopy shit and the writer can put minimal effort in because muh Lovecraft

This.

If only. That would have been a thousand times better than the "lol we represent order you represent chaos" shit they ended up goong with.

This is my wife. Say something nice about her.

If i pull of that mask will you die?

That Russian Hacker dude who leaked the whole original story after the Demo came out basically fucked up the day for the entire Bioware staff. They rewrote in a couple of months the entire last chapter of the game as far as I remember.

I feel like this is an excuse used way too often by developers/writers.

But there were huge fucking threads back then, pretty detailed too. Illusive Man transformed into a Reaper himself and at the end they get destroyed due to dark energy or something like that.

Not really better, in fact some of the stuff was just right up garbage.

...

Post your current Shep

I thought that was the plot of an anime, and there were just discussions about how the plot of ME1 and 2 looked vaguely similar.

Basically yeah, the original pitch was that the Reapers were trying to work out a way of preventing the galaxy from being destroyed by Dark Matter. At the apex of each galactic cycle, they would harvest the most advanced races, preserving their collective consciousness and allowing it to help work out a solution. At the end of ME3, you would have to decide between destroying the Reapers and hoping you could work out a solution to the Dark Energy crisis on its own, or allowing them to complete their harvest.

The only way the story could have been written well is with the entire galaxy being harvested/destroyed. You can't build up an enemy like the Reapers and solve their problem with a deus ex machina. They are supposed to be borderline invincible and are an inconceivable threat.

The final game should have been a race to send a message/leave behind a warning. Maybe even to Andromeda. Then the galaxy falls and you watch everyone you've cared about die. Think the Red Wedding from A Song of Ice and Fire(Game of Thrones).

It would have set up Andromeda to be an entirely different(and better) game. You spend the next trilogy devising a trap, the payoff being the final chapter when you manage to annihilate the bastards as revenge. It wouldn't feel cheap because it won't be some last minute dooms day device. It would be the help of a doomed galaxy and the preparation of the other one. Maybe the help of several galaxies.

>Then the galaxy falls and you watch everyone you've cared about die.

The fanbase would have reacted just as angrily if that was the case. It might have been better written, but the majority of people absolutely would not accept everything you'd done over three games amounting to nothing.

>If only. That would have been a thousand times better than the "lol we represent order you represent chaos" shit they ended up goong with.
Especially because most people cared far less about the overarching Reaper plot than they did about the smaller, character-driven stories. The Reaper plot was mostly just an excuse to hang out and go on adventures with your favorite space buddies and space waifus. Not bothering with an explanation of Reaper motives would have worked just fine.

>that paragon level
Beta

Fuck that. Grimdark can fuck right off.

>You can't build up an enemy like the Reapers and solve their problem with a deus ex machina.
They didn't *need* to use a deus ex machina. There was enough stuff that the set up across the first two games that could have been used to make victory possible. Reverse-engineered Reaper weapons, the tech in the Collector Base (which most likely included Reaper blueprints that could reveal weaknesses), the fact that this cycle's harvest was delayed by millennia, the denial of the Citadel relay to the Reapers (which means they can't do their usual decapitation strike and seizure of the relay network, plus the fact that traveling here the long way should have significantly drained their power).

Pulling the Crucible out of their ass was completely unnecessary. All they had to do was have everything from the previous games pay off. But they didn't want to to that, because then they couldn't sell ME3 to the Call of Duty audience by telling them it was the best place to start the series, or force their stupid Starchild on us.

The only form of shepard that deserves any mention is Femshep. Preferably the edgy renegade version.
