Nintendo Switch Sold Over 3,800,000 Units in Japan in its First Year; Triples the PS4’s Debut Year

dualshockers.com/nintendo-switch-sales-japan-first-year/

>Today Media Create released its weekly charts updated to March 4th, and adding the results to historical data, we finally know how many Switch units Nintendo sold in Japan in its first year on the local shelves.

>Counting the 45,083 units sold last week, the total count is now at 3,802,910 which is definitely remarkable, especially since for most of the year the console has been hard to find in the country.

>Considering the pace, it shouldn’t be too long before the console hits four million units sold, but it’ll be interesting to see if Nintendo will manage to hold its momentum through the second year.

>In comparison, the PS4 sold 1,143,542 units in its first year in Japan (which is less than one-third of the Switch’s debut year count), and 2,083,974 in the year that just ended, which was the fourth for Sony’s console in the country. That being said, comparing the trends between the two consoles is pretty difficult, as the PS4 had a rather unsuccessful local launch due to a poor lineup of Japanese games. On the other hand, the switch hit the ground running.

>Speaking of PS4, the latest Media Create Charts also attribute a milestone to Sony’s console, which is now over 6.5 million units sold in the country. More precisely, we are at 6,511,985.

>The most interesting element will probably be whether the Switch will keep increasing its sales over the years, as the PS4 did, or its trend will be more similar to Nintendo’s latest most successful console, the Wii, that started extremely strong in Japan, but then gradually declined year after year.

>Only the future will tell, but the first year is in the bag, and Nintendo definitely has reasons to celebrate.

Impressive, but I'm not buying one yet

Japan doesn't matter sales wise. Switch will probably pass PS4's Jap sales very soon, but you know what? Tons and tons of Jap games will still only come to PS4, and not Switch, because 1. Switch is weak as shit, and 2. PS4 is way more popular in the west.

SEETHING

I skipped last gen and I don't have a gayming pc.

Should I consider an xbone over a ps4 because of the backwards compatibility alone? I don't really care about bloodborne and TLOU clones. also 360 games are dirt cheap.

>and not Switch
Explain

Horizon sold more games than Breath of the Wild

You forgot that Playstation is the preferred platform by third parties and support for it will always be considered primary even when a superior, more fitting or higher selling platform exists while also ignoring that many of the titles that come to PS4 from Japanese developers don't push the system past what the Switch can do and have a sales ration of around 3:1 or 9:1 in favour of Japan.

What games did Horizon make

...

Zelda sold more by the end of last year than HZD sold a week or so ago, and Zelda wasn't discounted by it's publisher or sold at a discount as part of a bundle by it's publisher, and isn't on a platform with more than 2x the install base of all the platforms Breath of the Wild is on, and Breath of the Wild is a Nintendo title and thus is evergree and will continue to sell over the systems lifetime.

>because 1. Switch is weak as shit, and 2. PS4 is way more popular in the west.
I did explain. Point 1 is a major reason.

Thats not a good enough reason to ignore it

Especially from weebshit devs who still make Vita level games

DAT PS QUADRUPLE

But Dragon Quest Heroes shows outright with a perfect amount of evidence based truths that the Splortch is factually weaker than the PSVita and runs at lower resolutions and framerates while playing games that run silky smooth on Vita, irefutbles.

Why the fuck do you faggots care about marketing and sales, is this like some sort of buyers remorse coping mechanism.

>Splortch
Fuck off eric

That didn't refute what he said

Strong sales improves the possibility of support, although more than likely support will only come from Nintendo themselves because third parties are so wrapped up in PS4s spell.

How about Slutch

Again though, why the fuck do people post about this shit so much here? This is literally what neogaf and other atrocious forums were fucking known for and now its becoming more prevalent here instead of talking about
fucking
videogames.

What he said was factually wrong, the framerates are pretty right but the graphics and resolution are way above the Vita's standards

>third parties are so wrapped up in PS4s spell.
Its called multiplats, everyone is doing them

not true

>silky smooth on Vita
if you're gonna shit on the Switch for that vid at least watch the fucking video

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHH FUUUUUUUCK YYYYYYYYYEESSSSSSSSSSSSSS NINTENDO WINS AGAIN MOTHERFUCKERS WAAHOOOO
SONYBOYS BTFO YES YES YES FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCCC

I wonder if they have some new multiplayer IP like Splatoon for their paid online, Splatoon has been a huge success

same fucking fag kys

>console wars winner now determined by sales, not games

What the hell happened?

Lots of games suck now, so I guess people just point at unit sales as a whole to cover for it?

That's the best explanation for why this is news that I can give, because it is news.

No, there are many many exclusives to the PS4 that aren't explicitly limited to PS4s hardware features and aren't published by Sony, companies prefer it strongly over other platforms, even in the coming case of the Switch where their biggest market will own the Switch with an overwhelming majority.

>there are many many exclusives to the PS4 that aren't explicitly limited to PS4s hardware features and aren't published by Sony,
Name them

Why does Nintendo make people so mad?

>triples a console that did worse than the Wii U in Japan
>still way under the 3DS, DS and Wii
Japan's a dead market. And PS4 is obliterating the Switch globally. It's going to become even worse once people realize the Switch has absolutely nothing coming in 2018

It's winning on games anyway, more superior titles 1 year in, rember that if this was the PS4 Bloodborne would still be an entire quarter away, and new games will be announced tomorrow for the Switch, possibly even games that will release before Bloodborne did in the same timeframe.

>Moving goalposts

>he doesn't know the direct is tomorrow

Yaluza, yearly releases
Fist of the North Star
Granblue Fantasy Re
Persona 5
Crash
Demon Gaze 2
Dissidia Final Fantasy NT
EDF 5
EDF Iron Rain
Girls Und Panzer
Gungrave Gore
Idolmaster

Lots and lots more, games only on PS4, not published by Sony and not using features only available on Sony's hardware.

Back to xeno threads with you, shitposter.

>with a focus on fucking Mario Tennis
have fun i guess

NO NOOOOO

If you really think they're going to spend more than 3 minutes on Mario Tennis you're a literal brainlet.

>tfw haven't even beaten story mode or the arcade gauntlet with every character despite having it day 1
I miss the PSP games.

Direct will more than likely be a "blowout" for content already announced, it already states that it will specifically dedicate a large portion of the Direct to Mario Tennis Aces. The Direct also mentions 3ds titles, and on top of that it only says titles releasing in 2018, there is a very very low chance of new titles being shown.

Switch has matched the pace of sales of the Wii in America, Europe, and Japan in its first year launch aligned. Looking at the latest data, it actually appears to be a bit ahead of the Wii worldwide.

>P5
>Yakuza
>demon gaze 2
>only on PS4
Stopped there

I have literally never heard of nearly every game in this list, and 9 out of 10 times this means is literal weeb trash

>when a game that is complete trash only sells due to bundles and undersells heavily when it releases to consumers having to stand on it's own merits

>Yaluza, yearly releases
>Fist of the North Star
These two are right, by the same devs
>Granblue Fantasy Re
Correct
>Persona 5
not exclusive
>Crash
Timed exclusive
>Demon Gaze 2
Not Exclusive
>Dissidia Final Fantasy NT
Also in arcades
>EDF 5
>EDF Iron Rain
These 2 are exclusive
>Girls Und Panzer
This is stretching
>Gungrave Gore
A game we haven't even seen a picture of
>Idolmaster
And i'll give you this one

A good chunk of your list is either not exclusive or is obscure shit

>h-have fun with your Nintendo specific E3 tier reveals!

>opinion of a literal who
That's cool.

>E3 tier reveals

I padded that list out with junk, really my point is that PS4 is the defacto console, and it's so well embedded that many companies will not even consider the competition when making video games, sort of like the PS2 but with far less games and far lower quality games that just look nicer.

Where's Yakuza for the Switch, well that's never coming, there isn't any excuse with a lot of games, if Sega can get Sonic Forces onto the Switch in time with the other releases any company can get any game onto the Switch in time as long as the standard poly count for characters isn't 120k plus, many of these games are quite conservative aiming for higher framerates or detailed post processing.

SEETHING

Stop using Sonic Forces as an example, its literally 1 game and they admitted they focused on the Switch when they started development as soon as kits were available, why you think the game is ass and why do you think a 2 hour game took 4 years to make

TEETHING

The January and Fall ones USUALLY are.

It's hard to argue that E3 is much better at this point, honestly.

>TEETHING
that was fucking funny

Are we nintendo fans weebs?

I remember when this board would determine the best console based on the games.
Now you fags will literally use sales.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

WHAT
THE
FUCK
BROS

IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A BLUNDER!!!!!!!!

NINTENDOMINATION

>Japan doesn't matter
Sony fans are THIS delusional

Don't worry, it still kind of is.

lol ok

Did anyone say that the Switch was the best because of its sales? I just see news on its sales data. It is meaningful news, particularly considering all the doom saying surrounding it.

If you try to argue based on games, though, you'll just get people responding with "they're all shit :)". Sales at least show some objective data.

Last E3 for Microsoft
>Minecraft... in 4K!
Sony
>Here's... the same games you saw last year. Yeah, they're still not out
Yeah, directs are better than E3. At least they announce news without all the dumb sales people and dancing numbers.

Seriously.
>MHW sells in Japan
>YES JAPAN
>Switch outsells PS4's first year in Japan
>Japan doesn't matter fuck you

>it can still fail
AAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Okay, take the example of Atelier, that game was ported to Switch and launched the same day as the PS4/Vita version, was built on a proprietary engine and functions fine, Koei Tecmo/Gust were able to budget in a Switch port for this niche game, but say DBFZ, that game runs on Unreal 4, an easily portable engine, poly counts for assets are around the same as Guilty Gear Xrd which was on PS3, and on top of that the game could easily fit on a Switch cart, there was no excuse to not port this game with far greater mass market appeal in a genre that generally sells well if a small developer like Gust can port their niche game that runs on an engine that the Switch didn't already support.

At many points developers have no excuses not to port to Switch, and have everything to gain from doing so. It's very unforuntate that a smaller company supporting the Switch won't be able to establish itself and grow thanks to the power vacuum that now exists due to almost non existent third party support.

You know how libs act for every second trump isn't impeached? That represents Sonybros in a similar way. They want Nintendo dead and to go third party.

>switch derangement syndrome

Very nice.

NEVER EVER

It's important to remember in threads like these, that the delusional fanboys are a small minority of any fanbase. 90% of Sony fans shitposting about the Switch is one guy named Eric. The best thing you can do with these lunatics is just ignore them.

It doesn't really matter when most Japanese devs are ignoring it and only using it for downscaled/underperforming ports AFTER they release on the PS4.

Most things like VC4 have months upon months of delay before the Switch release. It literally only means a bunch of games will get a shit version to cater to Switchlets, no devs have really dedicated any resources for major games. Even stuff like Octopath is cheap, budget, and looks like a mobile game. That's pretty much what the Switch is, and what it will stay as because of its limited performance, battery, and lack of features.

Japanese kids like it because of the portable aspect, but most adults, moreso in other countries, don't give a shit. No point in carrying around a huge tablet with a

The PS4 currently has over 70 million units sold. The Switch has about 16. It's obvious that the PS4 will get way more focus right now. The Switch's library, as with EVERY video game console, will start to pick up around the 3rd and 4th year, when it has a good install base.

That's probably not true, but who the fuck is Eric? he's not that guy who accidentally posted a cap of his username that was linked to his youtube was it?

Is there a switch pro or console only version worth waiting for?

No and there never will be because of the Switch's branding and it's success with this branding, amongst other things.

Actually Nintendo consoles are already early bloomers. They often move onto the next one at 4 years, as what happened to the GC, Wii, and Wii U.

After the third year, there is a significant slow down. Only PS consoles have longevity.

I don't know but he's the guy who made literally every single anti-xenoblade 2 thread. I'm not kidding, every single one was made by him, you can immediately tell from the way he posts that it's him. For example, if you see the phrase "Nintendo blew their load" 99% of the time it's him. He has a few phrases like that he repeats over and over, I think it's an autism thing.

Good point, but Nintendo had loads of reworks on the DS as well.

The 3DS is still going after 7 years. Nintendo also directly said to investors they plan for the Switch to have a long lifespan.

Sounds like you have autism more than he does.

>switch
>home console

Because I came into this retard console war thread to tell people not to fall for bait?

I saw this coming. They really thought MHW would really kill the Switch. They thought ONE game would salvage the PS4s sales in Japan. Nope. Nope. Nopity nope nope. Japan is and always will be Nintendo Land. Europe is Sony Land and MH ain't big there.

I fucking knew it.

It is their next home console, the 3DS is still active.

I think that's the same dude.

But not a rework that cuts out what is seen as it's main functionality and marketing push, the 3ds had these largely due to problems with children and because the 3d saw little use, but then you get into issues of a more powerful one requiring a 3rd tier of performance, if anything just a revision with better battery life, no other significant changes.

Ultimately doesn't matter when MHW is doing more than well enough to never regress to the Switch.

>Japanese companies, both of them
>Industry is full of Japanese developers
>Japan doesn't matter
Seriously how do you come up with this. Share with us your enlightenment

>Doing well enough
It's cute how you're pretending they weren't paid off to not release it on the platform. It is coming to three platforms. There's no other reason why it wouldn't show up on a fourth besides shady business.

I wouldn't really say "regress" when World was in development before the Switch, and XX on the Switch was just a port of a game they had released anyways.
I do hope there's a line of games for consoles and portables, though.

Quit acting like Capcom hates Nintendo. There are like 7-8 of their games on the damn thing. Hell they said they were impressed with how well the XX port sold.

I like Nintendo but this barely even fucking matters. They still are massively behind in larger markets - US and UK. Unless you can sell 50 million in Japan alone, what's the point? Especially when those numbers aren't going to make developers support it anyway.

>cheap cash ins and ports

Yay.

Reminder that Japan DOES NOT buy console platforms, only handhelds.

>>Japan doesn't matter
I said SALES WISE.

I wanna fug shrug-tan

>It is their next home console
Nope.

Switch just set the first year sales record in the US

>Capcom will never port MHW to the Switch
>"here are games Capcom ported to the switch"
>t-those are just ports!
