I didn't mind the cutscenes, but many were very very long. Sometimes the game even prompted you to save in between cutscenes.

they aren't direct sequels, it doesn't matter but it is advised since you'll appreciate all the references more. and xenosaga, at least 1, has multiple instances where the game asks if you want to save in between the cutscenes. i don't remember 2 and 3 doing that though.

Gears is way better.

The primary problem with Gears is that Square cut the budget at the last minute so the second disc is just cutscenes bridging together boss fights and dungeons until the finale when they give you full control again. Even so it holds up great.

I liked one despite the many flaws but between the visuals, Shion's personalty flip from kind, optimistic scientist to bitch, and the no fun battle system I stopped maybe about a third of the way through.

You should play Xenogears and if you like it, read Perfect Works too. Xenosaga has a fuckload of references to Xenogears since they're based on the same plot outline (of which Xenogears is episodes 2-5 and Xenosaga is episode 1)

Xenogears is Episode V but shows some of IV and III with the Lacan and Kim sequences.

It's all we were going to get of episodes 2-5 because the plan to have them come out as a multimedia project fell through. Takahashi calls Xenogears "episodes 4 and 5 with fragments of 2 and 3 included" in PW.
