Lets talk about Final fucking Fantasy. You currently playing any? What's your favorite? Least favorite? How do you feel that they've whored XV out more in a year than they did to VII in it's entire lifetime?
I'm currently playing IV and I think it's become my favorite. Cecil is a fantastic protagonist and character and Rosa has become my favorite girl.
Good: 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 12, Tactics Ok: 1, 3, 10-2, 13-2, TA, TA2 Bad: 2, 8, 13, 13-LR I really don't care about any of the others.
Jacob Walker
XV was good, but it had big shoes to fill and I don't think it's filled them yet. Perhaps when ALL the content is out.
I personally enjoy 8, but compared to the others it's clearly inferior in many ways. It could have been so much more, and I still maintain that if it had ended when disc 1 had ended it would have been better off.

The only way to fix 8 would have been to make it about Laguna and his team in that era. But ending at disc 1 would at least move it up into 'Ok'. Forgot to mention my personal favorite is 5.
Kayden Perry
I agree 100% with you, I really like Laguna and when I last replayed the game it was entirely for him. If he had been the main character the game would have been much better and fixed most of my gripes, namely Rinoa existing, or the retarded cast of characters like Zell or Irvine. Also, ditch the junction system entirely.
5 is actually one of the few I never played, I got into the series on my PS1 and pretty much just went forward, hence going back and playing 4 right now. I'm playing 5 next, my friend tells me it's got the best job system in the series.

Not playing any. Favorite is VI, IV is really really close. Least favorite I’ve played is somehow IX. It started strong but got so dumb near the end. I didn’t like the pacing, the mi igames, or the dungeon design. The battles are so slow too. I think I need to replay this one, I missed something. II is the actual worst but its charming. Not too happy. Haven’t even played a numbered entry past IX yet. Rather see what FFXVI is than XV for the next 5 years.
Robert Nelson
Oh man, you haven't played X? You really should, despite the memes it's a very solid game and one of the best of the series.
Dylan Miller
I know, it seems like a fun time with Blitzball boy. I heard XII is also amazing. Somehow I’ve played Revenant Wings but not the actual game.
Jonathan Flores
X is so good I will mail you my PS2 and my copy, for fuck's sake at least emulate it. It's got some of the best characters in the series in my opinion.
XII was... okay. The world and lore is absolutely fascinating and is my favorite part, and the atmosphere was pretty good, but the revamped combat didn't really grab me and the main character, Vaan, is the fucking worst thing ever. It's still worth playing, but it did a lot wrong.
Ethan Hall
Kain is the Sasuke of IV
Ayden King
4 is boring as fuck. I just moved into 5. It's so much better.
Ryan Ortiz
...
Hudson Howard
I disagree, I've found the game very enthralling. It's a very basic story presented in a fascinating and alluring way I believe.
I'm looking forward to 5 a lot.

I’ll try emulating it again. I know everyone wishes Balthier was just the MC of XII.
Grayson Gutierrez
I actually wish it was Basch. Balthier works much better as the rogue sidekick, the Han Solo to your Luke if you'll forgive the cringy analogy.
Joseph Carter
>How do you feel that they've whored XV out more in a year than they did to VII in it's entire lifetime?
Implying they're done with VII. It was a different age back in '97. With the way the industry is cannonballing today, with dlc and lootboxes and games that you have to also buy movies and watch anime and read novels/comics to get the full story becoming the norm, they can and just might do all sorts of stuff to milk VII if they can ever get the remake done.
Cooper James
currently playing VI and its fucking great! never played any other than XIII (witch didn't really dig it) love square's touch in this one.
Chase Rivera
Oh man I actually forgot about the remake... you're totally right they'll devote a year or two to milking VII. Mobile tie-in games, VR "experiences" like the motorcycle segment... I'm gonna die.
VI is one of the best of the series, easily.
Robert Scott
VIII is still the best.
Jayden Parker
Basically this. In the 90s even jrpgs from big companies were lucky to get a fucking commercial outside of Japan. LoD became one of only 2 PS1 Greatest Hits jrpgs that wasn’t a FF game mainly because it got a commercial that people found amusing.
Christopher Martin
I liked VIII but Rinoa was a dogshit character and she ruined the potential as a protagonist Squall had.
Luke Jones
>it did a lot wrong.
Explain
Luke Jones
I'm not getting into this again. Replay the game and actually pay attention this time.
Oliver Gutierrez
>almost 3 years since announcement >no release date >its “episodic”, and there’s no way to split up FFVII without fucking up the pacing as the discs didn’t mean shit and were divided for FMV space >there’s no way they aren’t removing some of the charming shit like dolphin jumps and weird submarine minigames(girl cloud stays tho) >episode 1 is just gonna be fucking midgar and nothing else >also its an action rpg somehow
Chase James
Am I the only one who hates VII? It's honestly stopped me from getting into the series before X because everyone says VII is the best but I just find it so boring and the combat system is kind of annoying
Ian Hernandez
How many Final Fantasy games have you completed?
Which were your favorite?
Liam Williams
>for two weeks leading up to the FFXV release Sup Forums was almost unimaniously saying how shit it is >mfw i'm 30 hours in and just beat titan >mfw so far it's one of my favorite FF games next to Crisis Core and Type-0
The combat doesn't have alot of depth but holy shit is it satisfying. That 'crunch' that happens when Ignis does a link strike with your spear is orgasmic.
Logan Walker
8 is fantastic. You shut your mouth.
Laguna is a likeable character but he has less than a 10th of the character depth that Squall does.
Owen Murphy
Most of my gripes, if not all, are subjective. I'm not saying XII is a bad game, but it didn't grab me like the others.
I believe the gambit system is incredibly boring and trivialized the combat, and coming off of the superior system in X, this was a crime. Gameplay wise I found the game boring.
The license board, with a few exceptions, allowed pretty much every character to become the same character and learn the same shit. I didn't feel like any of the characters had a preset role, and they felt useless to me.
The main character was incredibly weak. Vaan was awful, and it's made worse by them teasing us with Rex and Basch. Penelo was also terrible in my opinion. The game had plenty of good characters though, like Larsa, or Balthier.
The music was entirely forgettable, another crime for a Final Fantasy game. I don't know, the game was fun but I can't replay it. It just didn't click with me.
I've played it twice and like I said, I like the game well enough but I didn't like Rinoa.
Luis Clark
Nobody has ever denied XV has fantastic gameplay, that's certainly not the problem with it. The problem for me is that the world felt underdeveloped, and I was severely turned off by the absolute shameless AAA whoring. It's a good game though, and I'll replay it when the ultimate super final finalist goty edition is out with all the content.
>Laguna is a likeable character but he has less than a 10th of the character depth that Squall does.
Yes, but this wouldn't be an issue if he were the main character. For the record, I actually like Squall, and think he gets a bad rep due to memes and the poor writing surrounding Rinoa and their romance.
Jayden Foster
>Nobody has ever denied XV has fantastic gameplay
What. Literally every thread made in the past 2 weeks has been "LOL PRESS O TO WIN" and "The only good bits of XV was the leftovers from VS"
Parker Watson
This is my first time on Sup Forums in months, but even still I guess I phrased that rather poorly. I thought the gameplay was fun.
Henry Campbell
>poor writing I can't wait for the eventual remake literally shove the romance in everyone's faces so nobody can miss the subtext and the like. Because clearly 95% of the people who play the romance miss shit that isn't blatantly stated.
Charles Martin
I find the gameplay very fin and satisfying. Going zip-zippidy as ignis, rooty tooty with prompto, and hulk smash with gladious is also fun.
Hell I wanna play more but it's almost 1 am so it's bedtime. Gunna wake up tomorrow at like seven/eight and play more.
Dylan Torres
I'd love a remake, my friend and I have talked about that for years. But with the negative press I'm not certain they'd take the risk.
I guess we'll just agree to disagree about Rinoa.
Have fun user, I work ten hours tomorrow then I'm gonna try and finish IV when I get home. It's gonna be a good weekend.
Levi Young
> You currently playing any? VIII and XIII VIII is probably the weakest of the PSX trilogy, so far the romance between Squall and Rinoa hasn't really dragged me into it at all and the battle system is overly complex and poorly explained at the start. I don't hate junctions, but the way GFs are handled is really annoying. It's like they saw pokemon and just slapped that onto the junction system which would've been fine on its own.
Also I'm split on magic being a consumable, it works in context of the story, but it's an annoying feature to play with
XIII's alright, I like the battle system more than VIII, but the super long and boring dungeons and lazy world design (in gameplay terms not aesthetics) kills it for me. I love the visuals and sound though, it's all fantastic.
>What's your favorite? VII, but I've tried XII a few times and liked it
>Least favorite? probably VIII
>How do you feel that they've whored XV out more in a year than they did to VII in it's entire lifetime? I think their approach for XV has been interesting to watch unfold. I haven't touched the game past the platinum demo, but seeing a title like this get so much post-release development has just been a really strange thing to observe.
I personally would've liked a more political story, something like a modern FFT with the whole mercenary army school concept and everything, and then slowly reveal the magical stuff being part of the story you've been showing from the start, but none of the existentialist crap that Squall goes through that is forgotten later on, and the love story angle, unless they go all out and make the Rinoa/Ultimecia thing but done well and more coherently. It could be done, it just needs massive rewrites.
William Gray
>mfw so far it's one of my favorite FF games next to Crisis Core and Type-0 well all three games had the same director so makes sense you’d enjoy them
Camden Turner
>negative press What?
Evan Martinez
Back when it was being developed as Vagrant Story 2, Basch, or the character Basch became, was the lead character.
Easton Green
Are you serious...? That's really disappointing, god damn you XII.
Henry Green
Playing XII Zodiac Age right now, since XII has been my favorite since I first played it on the PS2. Sometimes I resub to XIV for a month or two as well.
If one day my torrent of XV finishes at 300 fucking kbps I’ll play it, otherwise I’m happy to continue to pretend it never existed.
Angel Myers
The reputation the game has. Almost everyone on Sup Forums thinks it's the worst of the series. It's routinely shit on and called horrible, one of the bad games. The emo memes about Squall, the romance shit, the game has a reputation as one of the worse games of the franchise. I wouldn't think they'd be so quick to remake something that could potentially tank.
Luis Parker
I tried the FFXV demo but good lord almighty I can not get over how fucking faggy the main characters are. The world and everything else looks cool. The city, the castle, your dad, the car. Everything looks cool as fuck except the main characters. I can't even wrap my head around how fucking bad the designs are holy shit.
Jacob Sanders
I wonder what the story was with models lacking textures in vii. I know it was early in ps1s life and there was a lot to learn about its limits. But was it a case of them not knowing to implement them and keep performance? Or did they just not have time?
Its just shocking how huge the visual difference is between vii and viii. Never seen such a gap in any other series on the same console
Andrew Bell
I agree. She ruined him and almost ruined my enjoyment of the game for me.
Brody Powell
I think the biggest problem with VIII's romance is that they don't do much to make the player care about it.
For example in games like persona or Katawa shoujo the player is given the chance to interact with potential love interests of their own accord, and that paired with decent to good writing is enough to trick them into forming an emotional bond to the character.
However VIII's romance is not only linear, but doesn't really give the player any chance to interact with Rinoa outside of scripted scenes. This limits which players going to be touched by the story. If I had played VIII when I was younger I feel like I definitely would've been pulled in, but now when I play it I don't really care.
If VIII had a remake that took this into account along with other issues it would be a superior game.
Carter Allen
The combat system, specially in that mode that lets you pause in real time, just made me want to replay FF XII in the end. A lot of things XV did were things it aped or took from XII and it all just left me wanting to go back to Ivalice instead. I did manage to beat the game and do almost all the side content, but even that was not as involved and meaty as XII's side content. I hated that hunts were more like XIII's which is just "Go fight this huge monster" or whatnot. In XII, every hunt was a mini story in that awesome world. I also would've appreciated a way to control the AI of the rest of my team as well, not asking for something as in-depth as the Gambit System, but at least some more control than what we got in the end.
Many parts of the story too reminded me of XII.
Grayson Baker
The designs are pretty bad but believe it or not the camaraderie and deep bond you form with them make them pretty good characters. Good writing, especially in the very nice little conversations that happen around the world.
Still, they look like a boy band, it's bad.
Nolan Wood
I gotta be honest. I loved XV. I know a lot of people didn't, likely because they wanted Versus XIII. But I'm still very happy with what we got. Put 250 hours into it across 3 playthroughs
Carson Diaz
I believe one of the newer updates lets you control the other characters now that all their episodes are out.
David Sanchez
Where the fuck are you getting this overall opinion from? The emo memes are just that. Regardless of how loud Sup Forums screams, Squall/Rinoa is like the most popular hetero ship overall. And the game has always had mixed opinions, where a vast amount of people with beef against the game still like many aspects of it.
Blake Rodriguez
>You currently playing any? Tactics now and then. I'm basically at the end of the game. I'm just job grinding and further developing my units into super units. >favorite Tactics >least favorite Probably 2. >how do you feel I haven't been keeping tabs but I feel pretty certain VII is more whored out in terms of games, media adaptations, and cameos. XV couldn't possibly have caught up in terms of content.
Sebastian Powell
Played the heck out of FF12 last month. Right now I am playing FFIX on steam. I have all the FF variables on steam and running through the list pretty much backward except I already have 7 and 8 beaten and chievo'd.
Luke Gonzalez
>Where the fuck are you getting this overall opinion from? From a lot of people. I like the game like I said but over the years it's been, in my experience, routinely regarded as one of the "bad" ones.
Evan Fisher
>I can't even wrap my head around how fucking bad the designs are holy shit. I feel like you're exaggerating. I haven't gotten around to playing XV, but the character designs are the most tame in the series so I've never understood the hate they get. Outside of Noctis the rest of the party is wearing pretty normal clothing. ignis is in a suit, Gladio dresses like a frat brother and Prompto has a hipster/punk aesthetic going on. Noctis is literally just wearing an open shirt, jogger cargo shorts and boots.
Tyler Moore
Put the four of them together and they're a fujoshit boyband, dude. Also Gladio has an open leather shirt and rippling abs with giant tribal tattoos. He's a good character but the design is awful.
To be honest, with the addition of the numerous outfits you can alleviate most of the design woes, so both of us can be happy.
Bentley Foster
>XV couldn't possibly have caught up in terms of content. They were literally making extra content for XV before it came out. It had an anime, a movie, multiple demos, multiple mobile games.
Christian Myers
>Put the four of them together and they're a fujoshit boyband I can totally see it in that context, but that's more contextual. On their own I think each design is fine. I feel like everybody's just visualizing that image of them walking together whenever they think of "FFXV's party" and going off of that instead of taking a closer look at each design.
Jacob Ortiz
I like XIV
Elijah Edwards
I like it too, I haven't gotten too deep into it though. I kinda just drop in when the urge to play a comfy MMO kicks in.
Elijah Butler
Near perfect: 7, 8, 12 Good 9, 2 (4) OK 13 Fucking shit 10
Cooper Adams
You know, you make some good points, but overall I think each of their designs could use slight tweaking to really make them good. Again I haven't seen a lot of the newer outfits as I finished it shortly after launch, so maybe there's some really good ones now? And of course late game Noctis is 10/10.
Ethan Johnson
It's most probably because the game was 10 years in development and they seriously needed to recoup their losses, and do everything to garner interest so people go buy it. In contrast, the lead creator of Ivalice was booted from the project when the higher ups wanted more control over the development, unfortunately due to Sakaguchi, who was a big fan and supporter of Matsuno's work, having left the company and the exec producer position, which insulated Matsuno from having to deal with the higher ups before, and then after, he had to step up and fill the Gooch's role.
Joseph Nguyen
>Somehow I’ve played Revenant Wings but not the actual game. Same. Had a DS before a PS2.
Joshua Cox
Taking a closer look makes them worse. For example the driver almost looks okay until you see his goofy ass gloves. Like some plain leather gloves weren't good enough, even the smallest detail has to be over-designed. This mistake plagues every single outfit in the game. The only good ones are their final outfits that you only get after beating the last fucking mission.
Hopefully mods will fix this though.
Jose Hughes
Is RW worth playing? I just recently got a DS and there's a bunch of FF games on it.
Josiah Ross
Honestly? No.But if you're curious about the style and want some more XII, then it's passable.
Jayden Allen
This is what I'm saying, almost every outfit has one or two small problems with make it weird. Gladio and his open shirts and tattoos. Ignis and his gloves, wing tip shoes in the desert and hair. Shit, stuff like Noctis' default outfit having pants that don't meet his shoes but aren't really capris, giving this tiny sliver of visible skin between them. It's stupid.
Anthony Walker
I realize this sounds incredibly trivial and petty, but I did like the game and I finished it so I feel like I can have a few complaints.
Jaxson Long
>the camaraderie and deep bond you form with them make them pretty good characters
It makes them satellites to Noctis, that’s what. Noctis is really the only character in XV’s main cast. Him and Ardyn. Everyone else is completely defined by how they interact with Noctis and how their lives are about Noctis.
Sure you can call the forced devotion “camaraderie” or a “bond”, but it’s just bad, self-serving writing orbiting a character the writer clearly cared way too much about in detriment of fucking everyone else.
William Morgan
I can't remember which one it was, but one character had an outfit with a "holster" on it but it was completely pointless and that's the thing that made me go back and examine the outfits more closely and realize they were all trash.
Josiah Young
Well the story was about Noctis and they were his bodyguards.
Kevin Turner
playing XIV and recently started the four job challenge in FFV i don't care about whatever dlc scheme they have going with XV because i don't own any modern consoles and my PC isn't good enough to run it, i pretty much checked out of the series at 13 favorite would be FFV probably but i love most of the games least favorite is definitely ff13, it's not only the worst final fantasy game i've played but it's one of the worst games i've ever played in general. the only good things about the game are lightning's armpits and the graphics they're displayed in, everything else is a trainwreck. even the music is bland and forgettable.
Blake Sullivan
>even the smallest detail has to be over-designed. I definitely agreed with this in some areas. But despite that I think the look of the characters is still more tame than 90% of jrpgs. It's like for the design of their outfits they just took regular people and added some stuff here and there.
>like Noctis' default outfit having pants that don't meet his shoes but aren't really capris, giving this tiny sliver of visible skin between them That's actually bothered me a lot too, he'd be way better with actual cargo pants or shorts
Jose Hall
For all of my FF4 bros, did you play the After Years?
I am currently slogging my way through it, but I can't really say that I'm enjoying it. It's slow, tedious, and much longer than I was expecting. Also, the fact that it's a shameless retelling of the base game makes it less interesting
Isaac Peterson
>four job challenge in FFV what's this?
Liam Stewart
I definitely agree that they're tamer than most JRPGS, hell even compared to their own series they're incredibly tame, but still have issues. I always like to think that Square's design philosophy is to design something that's perfect the first time, then put it through board room meetings until they ruin it. Case in point: Tidus concept art, Basch being the original main character for XII.
Elijah Cruz
I'm playing through all of them as we speak. Currently on 3. I just wanted to replay 7 but I honestly haven't gone through any of them in years and wanted to do a marathon.
I'm enjoying it. 3 is a lot easier than I remember. They're all way easier actually all the same it's really fun watching the games evolve.
Leo Perez
Kain's journey to combat his darkness was my highlight. What happens to him in the end disappoints me beyond belief.
Also Palom and his harem shenanigans was great.
Anthony Sanchez
Unfortunately no, I'm playing the DS remake and I don't think it's included. Is it worth it, or should I just read about it and move on?
Robert Wright
I did. Honestly. It's kinda of a slog. There's some really nice parts about it but it's spaced out too far.
Lincoln Sanchez
It's really fanfictiony, even though it's the same writer. It happened with X as well, the new content they included for the FF X HD remake was written by the what you could call main writer in Square's more famous games, Kazushige Nojima, and it was a damn mess. The only one who has gone back and did a good job (IMO) is Masato Kato, when he came back and made Chrono Cross. Curiously, 4's writer worked on the story with Sakaguchi, as did Kato on Trigger, but when they were left to their own devices (though I loved CC myself), their next material is not as universally accepted as the original.
Ian Howard
Guys, can we agree that despite the shortcomings of VIII it still had an amazing soundtrack?
Most of the time the story is about the protagonist, but the supporting cast usually exists outside of their relationship with the protagonist.
It's pretty bullshit that almost all character development or backstory is exclusively in Brotherhood anime or post-release DLC, yet when it comes to the main story and game itself, they got nothing. Hell, they went out of their way to make it worse than just being nothing, while hurrying through the timeskip section they just have to tell you that your party members actively didn't hang out much when you were gone.
They clearly don't like each other, they don't hate each other, they just nothing each other, and pretty much anyone else.
Parker Edwards
FF1 for that classic JRPG feel. I prefer the GBA version over the PSP one at that.
Cameron Long
Oh of course, VIII's OST is undeniably and thoroughly exquisite. Similarly, the same could be said of Chrono Cross and that soundtrack. The game may be divisive, but the OST is glorious.
Henry Sanchez
card?
Connor Wood
>It's pretty bullshit that almost all character development or backstory is exclusively in Brotherhood anime or post-release DLC, yet when it comes to the main story and game itself, they got nothing.
This is objectively true and I agree, I despise how they've handled the story and character development of the game.
Nicholas Flores
That really doesn’t excuse them being such weak characters. Basch from XII was Ashe’s bodyguard, but had way more going on in his character than just playing second fiddle to her. Same with Fran and Balthier; she was his partner but had other things going on that were about her and not him. And they were actual character traits, not quirks like they try to use to set the other three boy band members apart.
