Simple. Old Lara was an electrifying babe with a great personality, as estatic of adventure as the player was. Nu-Lara is a cynical representation of AAA gaming; a living crash test dummy with an adamantium skeleton, who gains more "depth" and is a "strong female character" by how many spikes she takes through the stomach, how many cliffs she falls off, as the programmers put in what is essentially torture porn. Gone is the excitement and wonder from games, it's not gritty and "realistic" enough.
