We're not in 1997 anymore, we don't have to have to be held back by the limitations of the console. We can use modern technology to make low poly games that look as good as we remember them.

Indie devs who make shit are just going to buy/steal some Unity assets and use them in the game, not design their own. Indie devs who do their own work are going to make something better than the faux-pixel regular wall tiles and character models which the PS1 was only capable of producing. Basically, nobody has the desire or the motivation to make something which looks like the PS1 MML.

Because it takes way more work to make and animate 3 models, making them look better is the easy part. Are you a fucking retard or what?

It's easier to make a romhack then a new game. If you compare Zelda to high-budget clones that were made at the time like Crystallis or the Mana series, you get a bunch of weird shit like perspective-based hitboxes or being unable to attack up and down.

Mega Man Legends was a product of hardware limitations and lack of control standardization for the genre. If you ignore the fact that it didn't play well at all, You're left with something that is hardly aesthetically pleasing. This isn't Silent Hills.

Yo Noid 2 was a lot of fun and I really enjoyed it, if you're looking for a game that does have that sort of early console 3D feel to it. Sorry, can't find a better screenshot.

Working on it, but focus on my main project right now is taking priority... 3D is a completely different set of skills I'm pretty new at... Despite how long I've been trying it.

This is the character's old design, but it should give you an idea what I'm shooting for. Don't mind the unfinished gun texture here.

I would like to see devs play with hardware limitations a bit more, e.g. making a game that would actually run on the N64 or whatever.

I had a lot of appreciation for Shovel Knight working within those kinds of limitations.

Use hexagonal cylinders or rectangular prisms for limbs, and disconnect arms at the shoulders.

Don't obsess too much over polycount, but try keeping it lower than a thousand per main character and 500 per non-main character, most of your aesthetic will come from non-compressed, small textures.
