Factorio

Persona 5
Tearaway Unfolded
Tales From The Borderlands

Cave Story, with the original fan translation. Blew me away.

Also hot shots golf 2, expected a random golf game, I good an awesome game, that easy to pick up gameplay with deep as fuck mechanics, those courses, the great minigames, god tier multiplayer, characters and customization.
I miss the series, If only the vita wasn't such a piece of shit and I dont own a ps3/ps4

I was extremely sceptical about Undertale, but it delivered.

Never played with persona before...
Then one day i get it for psp
Damn i almost lost a job because of it.
But it was worth it.
Not only can i destroy monsters/demons, but i also could befriend them.

Also Neptunia
I was expecting memes. But it's kinda great on it's own way.

Disgaea: i like srpg the most, but still it was better than i expected.

sleeping dogs

Persona 3 FES after I bought and found it was anime high school kids with special powers save the world. Prior to buying I heard it was long and had good music. Of course I had nothing else to do but keep playing it.

Really enjoyed it by the end.

EDF 4.1

Witcher 1 and 2

>Dark Souls II

It's right to say it's the worst of the series but, it's plays perfectly fine with SoTFS.

Sleeping Dogs.

Anyone remember Lockerz? It was a stupid site where you could earn points by watching videos and shit. I ended up saving enough points to get Sleeping Dogs for free, and then the site went out of business a few weeks later.

Attached: lol.jpg (480x360, 8K)

For me? Deus Ex. Someone had put the game on a high school computer and I played it thinking it was a shitty Doom clone or something. Boy was I wrong.

>Tearaway Unfolded
This. When I stared, I just made edgy drawings of swastikas and penises, but I was blown away at the end.

I was skeptical because it looked like a weird source mod...And it is but turned out to be one of those people that get into it much in the same way I can't get into Dragon's dogma.
I see what it has to offer and that it can be rewarding if you manage to get over it's hurdles but I just cannea do it!

Trails in the Sky FC. Ended up playing the entire trilogy and loving it.

Xenoblade 2
Just wanted to play the game because ''muh animu'', but ended up loving it for the music and the characters

maybe the comfiest game I've ever played

I fucking remember that
In 2007/8 I tried to get a PS3 but gave up
I never knew if it was real or a scam

Divine divinity

WWE Smackdow vs Raw 2011
Expected some shitty anual game but played it a little and was pretty fun, plus the road to wrestlemania was enternaining.

Battletoads

Shadowrun, both the original snes one and the new trilogy.

Undertale

Ys Origin
Trails in the Sky

Splatoon. It’s just a shame the second one didn’t grab me the same way the first one did. Looking forward to that October Expansion though, it’s looking good.

ironsight right now
its a miracle how good the game actually is

Horizon ZD.
I thought it was SWJ garbage, picked up it in a deal ater seeing a thread and it turned out awesome

Devil's Third. Sure, it isn't the best, but it is a lot of fun and I really liked how Ivan would casually pull out a cigarette while crouching behind cover.

This too.

Cave Story
Witcher 1
The Last of Us (not really a favorite though)
Monster Hunter Tri

Gitaroo Man

Mostly happens with puzzle games for me.

Starseed Pilgrim and Chocolate Castle get special mentions here.

Dead Rising 1

Attached: frank west faces.jpg (1200x2200, 1.29M)

Dragon's Dogma. Favorite game of all time for me, and I expected it just to be an interesting take on an ARPG from Capcom, not a ludonarrative kinographic mastahpeace.
the concept of a players' own agency being worked seamlessly into a game's narrative is not as common as I would like, anyone have any recommendations beyond DD and Undertale?

>Morrowind

Fuck autocorrect.

Alpha Protocol

Titanfall 2
Soldier of Fortune
South Park: The Stick of Truth

this

Wouldn't have to deal with autocorrect if you weren't a phoneposting retard lmao
All phoneposters should be range-banned permanently

I got FF Tactics instead of FFVII as a gift. I actually ended up having more fun with it than when I finally got VII

It was my first FE game and I only bought it cause it was on sale when I got my 3DS, ended up loving it so much that I went back and played every game in the series, loved those as well and now I'm a massive FE cocksucker. I should've stayed away.

You’re not wrong, I just do it for convenience.

Breath of the Wild

Doom 2016
Seriously, nothing before the actual release of the game looked good.

Nosgoth

i bought it thinking it would be fun for a weekend and i ended up liking it so much i bought it for 3 friends so they would play with me.

the main reason i liked it though was that i was actually really dominant at it which is rare for me in multiplayer games.

Soul Calibur 2 back in the day.
I couldn't really imagine why you would want a game with just a few single room dungeons for levels I was used to Tomb Raider games and traveling all over the world and shit.

Arcanum
Homeworld
Mark of the Ninja
Mirrors Edge
Deus Ex
Tales of Maj'eyal
Space Rangers
Vampire the masquareade: Bloodlines

Quite a lot of them actually. It's nice to be surprised in a good way from time to time.

That game had so many skilled artists working on it, and it ended up being the most generic looking thing ever.

I'm ready to believe that it's pretty good as a game, though.

where did you get this comic of my wife

Did this and never looked back 4 years ago, don't regret a thing

Codename Steam
>10 bucks
>cover looks like shit & its cheap, must be shit
christ I was wrong

Final Fantasy Type-0 HD. Bought the game pre-owned for £10, hadn't heard anything about it and because it was cheap I didn't expect much. Ended up loving the fuck out of it. Sice and Seven were my girls, I'd swap the third party member whenever (pretty much everyone except for Eight since I could never get to grips with him) but Sice and Seven were my main party girls from the moment I could use them.

Attached: FF Type-0.png (1920x1080, 3.55M)

how would you go about doing this? just avoid game news on social media or what?

Those newer shadowrun games. I was convinced they would be shit and I was very wrong.

When I was in high school my mom got me Demons Souls from the bargain bin at the mall or something. I didn't browse Sup Forums at the time, Dark Souls hadn't even been announced yet, and I've never heard of Demons Souls. I thought it would just be some cheap generic bullshit. I almost didn't even play it at all.

You're not wrong... for the most part.

Attached: Hitboxes.webm (483x266, 632K)

ikr how can you even go on Sup Forums and expect to avoid hype?

>Never open trailer vids
>Never watch news about games, just find articles and announcements
>Filter Sup Forums threads about "hype new game" until two weeks after release
It's not that hard. It's better to be pleasantly surprised then anything else

Attached: Ffy17tN.png (889x573, 275K)

i pulled this out of the bargain bin at Walmart, a few days later i spent some of my hard earned lawn mowing money on the guide from ebay.

To bad nobody i knew had it so i couldn't really play multiplayer

Attached: 51G8EAXAZDL[1].jpg (354x500, 63K)

love this game
have you played phantom crash? i never finished that one

This. I'm currently doing this for Octopath Traveler. I've played the demo but I refuse to look at anything else until the game releases.

E.Y.E. Divine Cybermancy - the memes made me laugh and finally decided i should figure wtf brozouf is. Wasn't expecting the feels and atmosphere
Elona+ - it probably doesn't make too much sense to anyone but me, but this turned out to be morrowind the roguelike and i fucking love it.
DS2 - the amount of illegitimate criticisms against the game piss me off. "waah too many enemies!" "waah! locking on gets punished"(i stopped using lock on for the most part 1/4 of the way through DS1. i thought that was the general consensus along with relying on shields for blocking)
Nier Automata - all the disparate mechanics had me iffy but god damn was that a wild ride. still missing some endings tho

Rune Factory 2

First game was shit, but the 2008 Black Friday (subprime mortgage crisis just happened) caused Amazon to sell it practically for free, so I got it.

It's seriously one of the biggest improvements between two games in a series, ever. And plus it had Yue.

>out of state visiting my sister
>go to mall with family
>girls are gonna go shopping for clothes
>we agree to meet by the car in an hour or 2
>spot a game stop
>see many games Ive never seen
>pick this and War of the Monsters up for cheap mainly because I've been at the mall all day and haven't bought anything
>find out both games are awesome and have multiplayer when i get home

no, i never did have an Xbox. I would have in a heart beat though.

is this game's presence on "greatest games of all time" lists a misplaced nostalgia thing? of snes rpgs, it seems like earthbound and chrono trigger both hold up better, at least in terms of writing and tone (and it seems like ff6's story is what people love the most about it)

I don't get it, Sup Forums

Attached: Final_Fantasy_VI.jpg (425x234, 27K)

Metroid Prime.
More recently the entire Yakuza series when I played through all the games in a year before 0 came out.

>Be kid
>Birthday coming up
>Told to pick SNES game off shelf in hole-in-the-wall toystore at mall
>Didn't really feel hyped about anything
>See Shadowrun
>Has the cow skull thing in box art
>Was playing FF:Mystic Quest and was reminded of that one dungeon
>Whatever, pick that
>"Receive" it a few days later
>Play first few minutes
>Hate it
>Sit on it for like a year
>Try it again
>Finally get past the point where you're doing shit damage with shit beretta
>Actually doing the matrix stuff
>Hiring muscle to help me take down local gang that was hired to kill ME
>Start actually solving shit

Shadowrun... is incredible, but needs a better start for those who are new to it.

Re4

Same feeling, played it last year for the first time and it's one of my least favorite FF games. In general I don't get the love for FF games, only a handful are actually good. Im guessing it's nostalgia, since my little brother's first FF was 15 and apparently he liked it a lot

Bought one way heroics for something like $2 in a sale thinking i would refund it after an hour. Today it's still one of the few games i bothered getting all achievements because of how much i enjoyed it.

Rocket League
I only got it to play with friends, but once I got to a certain skill threshold, it became a lot more fun.

This

If I recall, it came out around the time of AC3, and Watch Dogs, which everyone was losing their shit over because of that bullshot trailer. I figured that Sleeping Dogs would be the worst of the lot, and the other two would be far better games. SD ended up the best and I've replayed it a bunch of times.

in comparison to the games you listed, it comes down to personal preference, as they are all top tier in different ways
i find FF6 to be the most replayable. it also has the most love out of almost any game in the romhack community, and there have been some really great conversions that modernize the gameplay nicely, making it even better. try brave new world.
chrono trigger, while fantastic, is a much more streamlined experience, which is good in a lot of ways and not so good in others. where it is not so good shows up in replays, where you'll recognize the game is pretty samey throughout, whereas once FF6 opens up a bit and you've got that huge cast of characters, the experience is a lot more modular.
earthbound is just an absolutely lovable game, almost everything about it is just so charming. however, it's best not to overindulge on earthbound. i'll play it once every 4 or 5 years or something like that, while i get the hankering to play FF6 like once a year. so much of what makes earthbound good is in its writing/execution and you don't want that to wear off by playing it too much. same with chrono trigger.
as for soundtracks, god, all 3 are just in realms of their own. "technically" i'd say FF6 has the best. i think the gameplay and the music intertwine in amazing ways. chrono trigger has a beautiful soundtrack with fantastic melodies; everybody agrees on this. it doesn't have the technical mastery of uematsu's consistent 4-part counterpoint, however, and the chord progressions are a lot more "what you'd expect" as opposed to uematsu's layering of multiple styles with proggy kinds of progressions. and earthbound's soundtrack is just a blessing for music nerds. almost every song contains a reference to a classic. the sounds are whimsical, and the songwriting manages to be FUNNY, even without lyrics. it's an amazing feat.

Fucking sims 4

Metal Gear Rising
Dragon Quest 8
Pandora's Tower

Definitely Cave Story for me. I expected an okay game at best, little did I know I'd fucking love it.

Goddamn his face has been fucked harder then Chris

Bloodborne. Ever since Armored Core 1 on PSX I've been splerging out about customization in games. When I saw that Bloodborne had less weapons than the prior games I just angrily beat it once. Took a recommendation from a friend for me to give it a real chance. Now I think it has one of the best stories in any game, "epic" JRPGs included.

Prey. Actually bought it for my brother, but he didn't care for it. I'm not in FPS games, but gave it a shot anyways.

Ended up being my GOTY by a long shot.

Hotline Miami was really fucking good for the low price i got it as. Beat it in one day then the next week was me getting A+ on every stage. Also I got really excited when i saw there were more levels, even if it was the bikers gay knife style.

I saw Mindjack at Gamestop a few years back for like five bucks. I wanted something new to play and figured for five dollars, what could go wrong?

I don't think I've ever had as much fun with online multiplayer as I did with Mindjack. For those who haven't played it, it's a TPS where you enter other peoples' games and take control of the enemies in an attempt to halt their progress in the story, sort of like Dark Souls but instead of it being about builds, it's just standard TPS rules.

>Neptunia
The writing is filled with shit jokes/memes and the gameplay is average, but there's just something about the games that's really pleasant.

Attached: Mindjack_cover.jpg (256x316, 23K)

Such a strange but entertaining game.

Terraria. I bought it before hard mode was a thing and back then it blew my expectations of pixelshit 2D minecraft clone, now it's one of my favorite games

I went into Terranigma expecting a Secret of Mana clone but ended up getting the best story and soundtrack ever to grace the SNES.

Attached: terranigma ark.jpg (900x645, 463K)

>Be me, 2004, go to gamestore, the guy that always work there, normally recommend me some games: "Hey user, look this GC game is pretty fun", the box looks boring and I don't feel it, but bought it anyways cuz that bro always recommend good games
>2018, Baten Kaitos is still my favourite jrpg
I don,t see that guy since 2010 but I will always be thankful to him

Infinite Space

Bloodborne.

I really disliked Demon Souls. I felt it was literally artificial difficulty. I actually liked it a lot because of how your character handled, but then I started going through the areas and fighting the enemies and it was the same thing every time I died and had to restart at the last check point. The enemies seemed awful to me. I spent half an hour spinning around this one guy next to a tower just trying to kill him. I'd just spin around him until I could nick without getting smashed, then I'd go back around to spinning again. I had no idea this game had a parry. Then there was the boss made up of a bunch of smaller slugs that also took me forever to kill because I had no idea it was weak to fire and used up all the fire things a while back. It was an awful experience.

So, I was wary as fuck with Bloodborne, but got it on sale months after release and had the most amazing experience in gaming ever. What was the difference? Well, I think I knew parry existed this time. And I'm not sure what else. It's been a while.
