Apparently they had some issues with Engine Software (based on the official announcement, the prototype was shit and it would be impossible to release something half-decent on that release date), so they decided to kick them out and get some help from Pipeworks.

No, it still is as mediocre as ever, but now with more mods. Some months ago someone finally started working on an actual sex mod, so maybe Starbound will at least be good for some faps.

Also, y'all ought to get Calamity Mod, it's practically terraria 2, it adds almost 30 bosses and a bunch of ultimate items and it managed to keep them all terraria-y enough and balanced, and also has an extra hard mode

It's also pretty balanced and has a lot of super duper bonus +1 equips from everyone else, it added like 100 hours on its own

Well user, unlike every other game in the not-minecraft genre, terraria has bosses, and crafting of weapons and accessories, and etc, which makes it almost closer to a metroidvania than a minecraft game.

If you want a goal, get good equips so you can fight all of them and beat the moon lord, there's your goal.

You can just make shitty mud rectangles and you'll be fine.

There is no reason to build anything other than a few crafting stations(anvil, furnace) and some shitty garbage rooms for your NPCs which take like 10 minutes total ever.

I wish Red had done Terraria 2 by now, a lot of people say how modding Terraria is shitty, and how a new game with new engine and stuff would be so much better for a new framework for modding the game. Instead he gave his prized IP for some other company to make a spinoff only to find the material they were doing lacking, and now some other company is making Otherworld from scratch. Have ~400 hours in vanilla and want to finally break in to modded.
Can one of you fine gents sway me towards either Thorium or Calamity? I'm looking for 'Terraria+' as well as nothing that feels too cheap if that makes sense. I figured those are the biggest two people play and there aren't many good comparisons between them.

Really sad that I lost the two maps I was working on a few years ago.

You can use both, they don't conflict with each other

Honestly just look up "best Terraria mods" or some shit and you'll find all the major ones, use as many as you want together, not many mods conflict with each other in Terraria

The only ones I'd advise you not to bother with are Tremor (extremely low quality work, lots of reskins and stolen assets, also buggy as shit) and whatever the creatures mod is that's supposed to add hundreds of new creatures, most of them are either stolen or extremely poor quality sprites and it has nothing resembling any semblance of balance

Thorium is the best "Terraria+" mod that seamlessly adds more content that feels like vanilla to every step of the game's natural progression, while almost all of Calamity only comes after the Moon Lord is dead and you'll be nearly done with Thorium by that point too, it has a couple Calamity tier superbosses as well I think

Usually my base turns into a sprawling castle where every NPC has a room with at least some effort put into it, and all my stuff is stored in random chests with no organization

Variety of enemies, not all underground is the same, an actual sense of exploration, bosses, events.

just about everything, starbound feels like a bootleg copy made by people who can't make an engaging game even if their lives depended on it
