My question is this. Is this confirmed? Are they going to make you delete your current character or start a new one to become an octoling?

Great flood happens, killing all of humanity and most wildlife on the planet.
Seas recede, varyingly anthropomorphic sea creatures rule the land and build a new society. The peaks of this are two cephelopod races: Ocatrians who largely kept animalistic looks despite wildly varying in sizes, and Inklings who can shapeshift between comical animal forms and nearly-human (this is a skill that cements with age).
About two generations ago, giant ass war between the two for dominant race on the mainland. Ocotarians lost, being seemingly forced to live in subterannean biomes and such while Inklings claimed the surface. Between the timespan of Splatoon 1 and 2, Octolings (subspecies of Octarians who mimiced the Inkling ability to take humanoid forms) started up underground music clubs and became a new identity of music. They've since slowly begun integrating back to the surface world, Marina being a wild case of a celebrity Octoling.

I like how people take shit seriously when the Sunken Scrolls are actually recently made and the entire "plot" is actually a televised ARG promoting the new albums of Callie/Marie/Octavio/Marina/Pearl.
The only reason the Squids and Octopi couldn't share the surface earlier was because they couldn't agree on what kind of music to listen to. The real plot is the music industry trying to popularize different genres and reintegrate the Octos with the surface dwelling species, because they'll make a killing with such a big demographic. Captain Cuttlefish is the real villain if you consider the industry evil, he's a goddamn manager.
But really, why do you think they still fight with Ink and music? Did you really think the Squid Sisters "hacked" the soundstage? The zapfish heists were just a publicity stunt for DJ Octavio's bad boy image. Why do you think Octavio got out so easily? Why do you think Marie was so immediately well received on the surface even though the city's last contact with Octarians was a supposed act of terrorism if it wasn't actually a publicity stunt? Why do you think Callie and Marie just kept dancing after "freeing" Callie despite having a sniper rifle they could help you with? Why do you think Callie just immediately kept coming back for encore performances? okay, maybe Callie is just a slut for Octodick...
The new Octo campaign is also a publicity stunt. That's why Callie, Marie, Pearl, and Marina are all there to help you... with fresh new singles to play! The weird clones are just... covered in INK!

The "octoling" you play as isn't actually an octoling. Look at the character's nom-humanoid form and then look at that form for the singleplayer's enemy octolings, they don't look the same.
