Does anyone else feel that the portability of the Switch might be having a negative impact on Nintendo's game design?

Does anyone else feel that the portability of the Switch might be having a negative impact on Nintendo's game design?

Both Mario Odyssey and Breath of the Wild are games loaded with content, but it's all extremely bitesized. Moons, Shrines, Korok seeds etc; they all feel like stuff designed for somebody playing in short bursts, which is how handheld games are often designed. It sort of gives me these bad flashbacks of when a sequel to a console game goes to a handheld, like MGS Peace Walker.

I can't help but feel that the reason why BotW was delayed for 1 and a half years is because they went back and redesigned quite a lot of the game to be portable friendly.

No.

Having 120 shrines definitiely feels like something done for the sake of portability, I wouldn't be surprised if they were originally longer and fewer.

Bump

They officially stated that this is true, at least for Odyssey. But it's obvious it's also true for many other Switch games as well, like BotW.

I really wonder if it's going to have a noticeable impact on Metroid Prime 4.

Moons in Odyssey are just a more important version of the blue coins in Sunshine and that wasn't mobile.

But Sunshine also had shines.

>30fps games
>2018
Even iPads and the Razer phone have 120hz displays
The absolute state of nintendo.

I dont mind this, even at home i barely have enough time to sit through a long game.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with 30 fps.

This has nothing to do with the hardware dumbass.

Nah, I don't really think so. While Mario Odyssey was obviously made with the Switch in mind, Zelda has both kinds of content. The korok seeds just seem to be a reason to have something to do in the overworld when exploring but you also have the long beast sidequests (including the dungeon itself) and other shit. It's a game that has both bitesized content and big chunks of it.
The portable aspect also is not seen at all in games like ARMS (which is not even that good for portable play) or Xenoblade. I very much doubt it will affect Metroid Prime 4 too and having bitesized content can also be a good thing for games like Animal Crossing.

Except:
>Less responsive controls due to reduced input polling
>Less information being displayed
You know, only the most important parts of a game are impacted. Nothing wrong with that xd
The refresh rate of the display has nothing to do with hardware?
Nintendo fans lads. Mega cringe.

good job, mario isn't even 30 fps you bonghead. stupid fucking argument, lmao 120hz tablets = HIGH FPS, why am i even answering, jesus im even more stupid than you

Really doesn't make much difference at all, I think you just like to complain.

the only reason you'd prefer high fps over visual fidelity is in FPS games (lel). And those aren't played on consoles, let alone in handheld mode. Something like DOOM on switch is impressive, but i wouldn't touch it with a stick, simply because shooters were designed for KB+M input and not controller/motion stuff. consoles and controllers are great for many other games, but not for shooters.

BotW wasn't even initially planned for Switch and the shrines are there due to a precise design decision. Their aim was making a massive world and thus it felt right to them to take the usual dungeon content and disperse it all over instead of just keeping it to a few centralized locations (which they still did with the Divine Beasts).

not at all they still feel like console games. its probably intentional

Wow, nice counter-argument I hadn't considered that.
Come back with something objective. Consider yourself objectively blown out.
iPad and Razer phones are 120hz. They aren't even gaming devices.
Switch is 60hz trash.
?????????
Any game that is a test of motor skills should be running at minimum 60fps. nu-Sup Forums truely is worse than reddit lmao

Maybe to an extent. Although the impact is likely lessened by the sleep mode.

Well it's open world so people can just wait until they have time for a longer session to do those longer parts. It allows people to avoid getting too bored of doing a bunch of bite sized content at once. But to an extent you are right.

The Switch version clearly canibalized the Wii U version though, they removed gamepad functionality simply so that the Wii U wouldn't have features over the Switch version; so I think it's safe to assume quite a lot of the game was reworked.

Nintendo going for the handheld route was genius.
Now noone cares that their console is a piece of shit since it's just a handheld.

Breaking the console gen cycle was even smarter.

Switch is underpowered as fuck, but since both the PS4 and Xbox One are old by now they could get away with it. Even managed to snag some multiplatform games.

Dumb scout-poster

>They aren't even gaming devices
Bingo! You're fucking retarded.

No.

>120hz has no benefit for gaming
Just take the L. You lost.

Nintendo gave up on doing home consoles. The very existence of the Switch instead of a traditional console is proof that they couldn't afford the arms race anymore. For better or worse Nintendo went all in on handhelds.

There are stars in Mario 64 that you literally walk forward to get.

>my iPad runs Bejeweled at 120 FPS, why can't BOTW get past 30?
I used to think there was a big overlap of Sup Forums posters here, guess I was wrong.

>tfw Bejeweled understands the importance of framerate more than Nintendo
