D&D's a pretty mediocre tabletop system if you actually play other ones, it's noteworthy for being "the original" and having tons of content and options from years of updates. It's not the end-all-be-all casuals make it out to be. Not to say it's bad, I mean some people would go as far as to say that. However, I play 3.5 and 5e now and then if someone's running a game but there's better options about. And many of them do not follow this mindset of penalties to magic for wearing armor letting you be a battle mage if you want to, and they balance this combination through other means.
