Dante also tries that in 1 and fails. When he tried to be dramatic it was cringe worthy. 3 got it right by acknowledging he's a dumb overpowered videogame character who likes to have fun and kick ass.
Dante's DMC3 design fits his personality more. 2,3 and 4 are visually more interesting than 1's blandness. But I guess people just can't see through nostalgia glasses. Uncle Dante is still better than 3 Dante though.

Popularity doesn't equal quality. His design in 1 is the base that they improved upon. His design in 3 matches his youthful personality and cockiness. His design in 4 is like a better version of 1. And both those versions of Dante are way more fun and endearing than the dull nothing of Dante 1.
