If Nintendo put you in charge of creating a compilation of 30 of their best games, what would you pick?
Hard mode: 3 Games Per System Very Hard Mode: 2 Games Per Franchise + Rules Above Lunatic Mode: No Third Party Shit + Rules Above Dante Must Die Mode: No M Rated Games + Rules Above
>The differece between Dante Hard Mode and Lunatic is that you cant say Eternal Darkness
30 is way too much to list aswelll
Nicholas Ortiz
>nothing by Rare Sorry, can’t be done
Nicholas Perez
15 mario games and 15 zelda games.
Cameron Long
You wouldn't be able to say Eternal Darkness either way. Silicon Knights has never been owned by Nintendo.
On that note, OP, do you not know how difficulties work? Nintendo has never made an M-rated game, so if you exclude all third party games, then excluding all M-rated games after third party games is pointless.
Lucas Gutierrez
Drawing one up on Dante Must Die right now. Give me a bit.
Dominic Bailey
Fuck your hard modes. However I am not including third parties in my list.
1. Mario Bros 3 2. Super Mario World 3. A Link to the Past 4. Link's Awakening 5. Super Metroid 6. Donkey Kong Country 2 7. Kirby Superstar (Ultra, probably) 8. Star Fox 64 9. Ocarina of Time 10. Majora's Mask 11. Mario 64 12. Banjo Kazooie (does this count?) 13. Paper Mario 14. Warioland 4 15. Metroid: Zero Mission 16. Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga 17. Mother 3 18. Metroid Prime (yes the first one, fight me) 19. Pokemon HG/SS (but really Platinum, BW, and BW2 would do just fine here as well) 20. F-Zero GX 21. Smash Bros Melee 22. Pikmin 3 23. Mario Galaxy 2 24. Xenoblade Chronicles 25. Sin and Punishment: Star Successor 26. Kid Icarus Uprising 27. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze 28. Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance 29. The Wonderful 101 30. Breath of the Wild Maybe I'm a hypocrite for axing some sequels or past installments for fear of redundancy but keeping Super Mario World, Link's Awakening, and Major but I don't fucking care.
Eli Russell
Well I don't know the nuances of Eternal Darkness' copyright, but I do know you don't have to own the company making your game to own your game's IP. Intelligent Systems is independent of Nintendo but that doesn't mean Nintendo doesn't own Fire Emblem.
Hunter Carter
NES: Super Mario Bros Metroid Punch-Out
Game Boy: Pokemon Red Donkey Kong Kirby's Dream Land
SNES: Link to the Past Super Mario World Earthbound
Game Boy Color: Perfect Dark Wario Land II Tetris DX
N64: GoldenEye 007 Star Fox 64 Banjo-Kazooie
Game Boy Advance Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising Fire Emblem (Rekka no Ken) Kirby and the Amazing Mirror
Gamecube: Super Smash Bros Melee Metroid Prime Pikmin
DS: Kirby Squeak Squad Pokemon Platinum Yoshi's Island DS
Wii: Donkey Kong Country Returns Super Smash Bros Brawl Super Paper Mario
3DS: Kid Icarus: Uprising Fire Emblem: Awakening
Switch: Breath of the Wild
The 2 games per franchise was pretty tough. I counted Mario spinoffs (i.e. Yoshi's Island and Super Paper Mario) as a separate series from mainline Mario, because they pretty much are.
>Super Nintendo Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past Super Mario World Super Metroid

Logan Sanchez
30 installs of Majoras Mask.
Landon Hill
Well actually yes, it would be. If you own the IP, it is first part. "Second party" doesn't really exist but it could sort of be used to describe a shared ownership like with Pokemon.

>"Second party" doesn't really exist The fuck it doesn't. >first party: developed by the people who made the hardware (Sony, Nintendo) >second party: developed by wholly or partially owned subsidiary (Naughty Dog, Rare) >third party: developed by wholly independent company (Ubisoft, EA) This has always been the case.
Ryan Reed
>second party: developed by wholly or partially owned subsidiary (Naughty Dog, Rare) That's purely colloquial. If you own the IP, it is first party from a legal standpoint.
Wyatt Garcia
I'm brainlet apparently.

Tyler Powell
Yeah, the circumstances of that one are beyond me, so you've got me there. However, Geno is considered a third party character, so second party still doesn't actually exist beyond colloquial terms.
Robert Robinson

That's not really true, if an argument over ownership of a character were to be used in court, it would be over whether the character was owned by a publishing first party or a collaborating third party. The second party in the most literal sense is actually you, the consumer. If you think of this in terms of how stories can be written, it should all make sense to you. That should properly contextualize what it means to be the first, second, and third person.
Gabriel Perry

They were more quota-fillers than anything else. I'll admit they're kind of shit. It's hard to find shit published by Nintendo only with only 2 games per franchise. I had to make some compromises.
Liam Robinson
huh, didn't know Nintendo made Contra 3, Earthworm Jim and Final Fantasy
Christopher Price
Clearly wasn't adhering to those rules to begin with, so don't know what your issue is.
Michael Stewart

I tried to make it more than a Zelda/Mario box. Hard mode is pretty hard.
Jackson Brooks
Its supposed to be a Nintendo compilation. Why post if your not gonna follow the theme?
Eli Brown
Pretend it's 1998. Banjo-Kazooie just came out, developed by Rare, a company that Nintendo owns (present tense; remember, it's 1998) nearly half of. You're saying B-K is a third party game.

that's 21 and obeying all the rules. Shit's kinda hard the further you go along
Carter Carter
Well I'm not sure, user. Did they have claim over Rare's IPs at the time? If so, then it was first party. If not, then it was third party. IP ownership is all it really comes down to. A game made by the console manufacturer or its subsidiaries, the first party, consumed by you, the second party. A game made by an outside developer, a third party, for a console maker, a first party, consumed by you, a second party. That's the most literal definition of the term.
There's nothing wrong in using "second party" to describe a game with weird ownership or development around it but it's not an actual term to describe the business of development and consumption.

Keeping to first party, no re-releases, and 3 per system is rough,.I missed out on 2 of the best games of all time (Killer 7 and Ghost trick) and really had to stretch for the 3DS first party titles. It's a good list, but in no way perfect, missing some real gems from the NES, SNES, Gamecube, and Gameboy advance era even still keeping to first party.
The IP is and was owned by Rare. The company was a subsidiary of Nintendo. So was the game first or third party, since I assume we can both agree that it can't be both.
Leo Peterson
>Castlevania >Elite Beat Agents >Bravely Default >first party
Colton Cooper
Well from a legal standpoint they would probably be considered first party but under a loose contract. The deal meant that anything developed in house by Rare was under their copyright and then property of Microsoft.
Now things can be different for every developer, but Gamefreak for example has the ability to make different IPs for different systems under certain circumstances, just not Pokemon without Nintendo's permission. It's possible that Rare was under a similar bind with anything original they developed under Nintendo's umbrella, until the Microsoft buyout that is.
Charles Miller
I'll play your rules. I'm assuming GB & GBC count as one thing and Switch games are not a part of this.
NES >Super Mario 3 >Kid Icarus >Duck Hunt

Elite beat agents was Nintendo published, but you're right about Castlevania and Bravely Default. Bravely Default was only published by Nintendo outside of Japan, and being in the US myself I had to look that up, and I simply fucked up with Castlevania, that should be Metroid.
>Metroid >Metroid II: Return of Samus >Super Metroid >Metroid Fusion >Metroid Prime >Metroid: Zero Mission >Metroid Prime 2: Echoes >Metroid Prime Pinball >Metroid Prime Hunters >Metroid Prime 3: Corruption >Metroid Prime Trilogy >Metroid: Samus Returns >18 more copies of Super Metroid.

I can't even name many first party games for the NES, SNES, and handhelds since they had so much third party support.
