After replaying 1, vanilla 2 and 3 back to back a couple months ago I came to the conclusion that the only ones who will be caught with their pants down are the ones that only played 2; 3 is definitively the hardest game of the trilogy so if they finished it they're ready for everything.

People who primarily played 3 will be used to many training wheel mechanics that don't exist in 1, particularly in regards to invasions. There are no easy countermeasures against invaders in 1 and they can heal as many times as they have humanities farmed up. So people who only played 2 will find the game harder but people coming from 3 will find invaders way more difficult because it's not weighted in their favor anymore.

Not really. Unlike 2 and 3 being hollow doesn't affect your total HP so you can just stay hollowed the entire game. And any obscure thing about 1's mechanics (like the embers and the blacksmiths) can be easily found with a quick google search.
1 isn't THAT different compared to 2 and 3; to the core they're exactly the same game.
