So is Pikmin set in the distant future of Earth? The first one kind of implied that it was far in the future and humans may have gone extinct. But all the product placement in the second one and obvious human activity in the level design implies otherwise.

I don't see how Pikmin 2 implies otherwise. The people are gone, but the relics of their culture still survive. If anything, it could have been a recent mass-extinction.

I don't dislike them, but Pikmin was always kinda Olimar's story. It was really weird to have him shoved into a supporting role and to see him behave not particularly similar to how he did in 1 and 2. I don't think Nintendo actually took 1 or 2's plot into consideration.

Not really. Pikmin 1 only lasted like a month, probably less than 15 days depending on how good you are at the game. Pikmin 2 usually takes less than 20 days too, and in that game he's got another person with him in addition to an AI buddy and constant contact with folks at home. And the Pikmin themselves, of course. If anything he probably came out of the whole ordeal more confident in himself.

I don't actually think that the Pikmin 2 locations are the same as the Pikmin 1 locations, due to Forest of Hope and Distant Spring still being in their respective seasons, but Impact Site is for some reason in autumn now. And more importantly than that, the locations don't even line up on the world map no matter what perspective you look at them from. Maybe that's looking too deeply into it, but I see those places in Pikmin 2 more as homages than anything.
