There is a GoG thread which will list the tweaks and fixes that most people play with. Your main choice is whether to play the enhanced edition and deal with the shitty added writing or play the original and spend time patching it.

He has the highest base strength of any companion until Throne of Bhall. At the very least, he serves as an effective pack animal.

His dex and con aren't half bad either and his rage ability give him a nice little boost in hard fights.

Leave one in a house. Everyone else goes outside. Drop unwanted partner via the menu screen. Voila, the pairing is broken and you don't have to kill them or deal with the remaining partner's bellyaching or, in Minsc's case, battle-rage.

He has an insane STR and solid secondary stats. He also makes for a pretty decent bowman if you already have your frontlines filled and you're really hurting for one.

they redid a lot of the cinematics but just cut out the rest, didn't replace them with anything, not sure why funny because its supposed to be enhanced

Beamdog's enhanced editions put Sony's remakes to shame. Not even ten minutes of modding the original gives you a superior experience than playing any BG:EE.

I tend to plan my party while I create the main character so I can pick them up quickly.

Pick whatever sounds fun to you. You can have a party of up to 6 people from a range of classes to make up for whatever failings your character has.

If you're completely indecisive, paladins are pretty good.

Some kind of warrior class (Fighter, Paladin, Barbarian, Ranger). They're simpler. You can learn the magic system from your companions.

BG1 is all about the low levels so you want to avoid the arcane spellcasters on a first playthrough
any of the martials are fine, fighter paladin or ranger., best way of handling enemies is to have your entire party use ranged weapons and simply kite/kill things from the safety of range, have any casters you pick up focus on crowd control spells like grease, entangle, web, and possibly sleep (which is it's own world of pain depending on your version of the game)
you'll eventually come across pic related and with this you can lure enemies into your own CC and not suffer it's effects whilst the rest of your party is still using ranged weapons to pick off enemies

he does have magic resistance though. and im fairly sure he is immune to death spells so you cant get a lucky natural 20 and instakill him.

You don't have to kill them, just abandon the one you don't want in a house you'll never go back in, that's what I did.

Viconia is the most three dimensional out of the three and is somewhat sympathetic despite being evil. She can also be redeemed so that's a plus. She's also the only one willing to fuck half-orcs, which is what I play a lot of the time, so that's a factor for me as well.

Jaheira is a bit too bossy and I don't like how she jumps your bones weeks after her huspand was killed. Also, she was appointed to be your guardian (along with Khalid) by Gorion, so that's kinda kinky.

Aerie is cute and innocent, which I like, but the whining is just too much.

All three are good though. Depends what kind of character you're playing.

Alright. I'm planning a new evil playthrough. Lawful Evil Half-Orc Kensai. What the fuck am I supposed to do for magic in BG2? Edwin isn't enough to handle every mage on his own and none of the other evil NPCs are mages.

Well, not when you're playing with something like tactics or SCS and you have to strip the defenses of 4+ enemy mages, all with contingencies, of course.

Yeah, he's fun. I took him through BG:EE and am in SoD right now. He offensive power is amazing. In ToB he'll have +13 to hit and damage, 25 STR naturally and max damage on every hit with Kai (9APR with true grandmastery and improved haste). I can't wait to shank some niggas.

Are you playing with difficulty mods? Sometimes it's just faster to kill mage with weapons than bothering to dispel their shit.
Alternatively you can take Imoen since she doesn't care if you're evil
