Pretty good games, kinda standard on the platforming but throws in some interesting things like animal buddies and levels with gimmicks. The sound, the graphics, good stuff.

It eventually broke a million, which for the Wii U is respectable. He's certainly an answer to the Sonic tude, like the deluge of mascot platformers that tried to copy it, but DK didn't date itself honestly, it just made DK a bit more of a hedonist that likes being lazy and listening to music while Cranky was a smart ass about how games were better in his day.

They do the 'level getting destroyed' gimmick a few too many times, but the levels never get automated, sans the minekart and rocket barrel stages, which aren't super frequent.
I still think DKC2 is the pinnacle, but Tropical Freeze is a solid second and I wouldn't call it automated at all.

Next title needs a darker, earthier palette. The point of DKC was that it was realistic in the sense of the visuals and tone. You couldn't do Kremland or even the entirety of DKC2 today.

I agree. I love the new games, but they don't touch the atmosphere of the classic titles at all, not by a long shot. Even the last world of Tropical Freeze, which is a step up from everything else in the Returns series, falls short.
