the reason is: x1x is actually the strongest console (but also most expensive) right now. it also has the best hardware for it's price. building a pc with as good graphics and FPS as the x1x would cost you about 800-900€ currently. And I'm saying this while never having cared for consoles, been a PC gamer all my life long (i7 7700k oc'ed to 5,0ghz, gtx 1080, 16gb ram 3000mhz)

People buy consoles for games like Call of Duty and FIFA, and Xbone not only has latest CoD games, but also has both Black Ops 1 and 2, while being only available as 360 BC games, they're some of the most popular and most liked CoD games.
And people actually do use backwards compatibility, only Sony damage controlled that hard "why would you want to play old games?", because they're literally unable to emulate PS3 with PS4's CPU. Black Ops 1 (released 2010) currently has over 100k concurrent players online on Xbox Live.

It's impossible to emulate the PS3 CPU. It's easier to just remaster the games and sell them for cheap instead. This is why so many Sony PS3 games got remastered this gen. I don't mind them remastering the games, just don't sell them for more than 25 bucks.

That's a pretty big gap. Usually these NPDs end up almost tied but this time the gap was quite big. And since Switch isn't doing too hot in Europe either this leaves only Japan that must pick up the slack for Nintendo.
