Rosalina's storybook in Galaxy 1 is about as far as plot should go when it comes to Mario games not called Paper Mario or Mario RPG.

And btw, i would argue that in story driven games the story is just as important as the gameplay. i see video games as an artform that creates virtual worlds for you to explore, and experiencing a story while being a character inside the world in which the story happens is an amazing experience
