Counterpoint: I hate it because it's a cinematic experience. Now you can wax and wane about how it totally has alot of gameplay, but does that really matter? In terms of context, the devs blatantly wanted to push a political agenda with a story. Essentially all cis white males are evil, and Aloy has to destroy the patriarchy with gaia from Captain Planet. And as a result we get a game that's poorly optimized and filled with a bunch of nonsense and filler, not to mention easily dispatched enemies. And the story is just bloated as all hell. So essentially, when you're playing the game, you're wishing it would be over, but when you get to a cutscene, you're wishing to get back to the gameplay. It's like a hodgepodge of bad game design.
I take the same issue with Breath of the Wild as well. You can say it's not a cinematic experience, but all I see is a game where a cis white male has to humiliate himself and rescue and serve every woman in the game like a slave because toxic masculinity is a bad thing and we need to promote crossdressing to be more inclusive and diverse. Of course, the terrible gameplay, the terrible FPS, and excessive DLC with content blatantly cut out of the game doesn't help it.
I guess what I'm saying is that I don't fancy either, and when I think open ended sandbox experience, I think back to another.
