Are there any examples of people taking a fighting game character everyone assumed was low-tier, and fucking everyone up with that character, instantly upending the commonly accepted meta?

Xian likes characters nobody plays so he can steal majors because people have fuck all matchup knowledge.

Gen was considered pretty shit in street fighter 4 until somebody discovered you could link a bunch of his normals into hands, getting loads of meter and stun, whilst also giving you the option to cancel into super for huge damage.
Then Capcom nerfed it and he went back to being completely irrelevant and ridiculously hard to use again.

Pepeday also fucked everybody up with El Fuerte at a Tokyo Gameshow.

The lack of matchup knowledge definitely skews these results. Doesn't make a character high tier if nobody knows how to fight them because one autist dedicated their whole life into make the character slightly less than garbage.

It happens occasionally, but the tier lists quickly get updated whenever someone so much as lands a punch with any character in a tourney, so it's a moot point.

Didn't Fei Long go through this when SSF4 first hit? Like everyone was laughing at him on release but then he suddenly shot up the tiers and then AE buffed him even more? I remember something like that.

Back when street fighter alpha 3 was big, everyone thought sodom was a bottom tier character. Then Eddie Lee traveled to west coast tournaments and was beating top players left and right with him.

KaneblueRiver winning major tournaments left & right with Hulk/Haggar/Sentinel in MVC3.
Most top tier characters in Marvel 3 have ridiculous zoning and can kill shit with chip damage alone plus with level 3 X-factor characters like Vergil are so fast and have such ridiculous mixups that playing big, slow characters with no projectiles was seen as a death sentence.

Q is low tier tho
Kuroda is a 3S Savant which is why people assume Q is any good

OP does not mean a guy being successful with a low tier.
Q and Potemkin are still bad, they just have crazy good players.

I don't remeber any instance where one guy changed the entire meta although it is fun to see someone do well with a shit character.

A Street Fighter player named Gamerbee did this with Adon in at Evo a few years back. It was generally accepted that Adon was a trash character, but this Taiwanese dude just rolls into the biggest American tournament of the year, makes a statement by knocking one of the best American players out of the tournament, and ends up taking 5th place. Adon shot up the tier lists after that.

Other examples that I don't have as many details for and might be incorrect about are the guy who put Braixen on the map in Pokken by winning Evo with her, and Armada taking people out in Melee with Peach.

Lots of mentions in this thread already for some games, are there any examples from tekken?

pretty sure kaji and kuroda never upended the tier lists, they're just so good they make the characters work
