Now that the dust has settled. Why did this game flop in NA? Not enough advertising or exposure?
Now that the dust has settled. Why did this game flop in NA? Not enough advertising or exposure?
Shit exposure from an art change that was so minor that few people would notice it, but enough people did that they blew it up.
Also to the same point, the changes were "so minor and nearly unnoticeable" as they put it, but they still went through with them, to what end? They had no reason to be made, it was just titties in promo art, it didn't affect the game's rating, it was done solely at the discretion of the NA branch, then retroactively applied to the kr server which was just as confused as everyone else (but hyper universe is a flop in kr too, versus cyphers also owned by nexon, which is still incredibly successful) and we still don't have a real reason why.
The community manager either quit or got fired, and the game is just floundering, shitting out the updates that were lined up pre-launch, but it doesn't seem like something that's gonna make it through the year.
nexon really should have just released Maplestory 2 in global. why they blue balling so hard?
Because mobas are dying. HU was late for the party now that the trend has moved to Battle Royales. And it doesnt help that the game is very VERY shallow.
t.someone who actually devoted 50hrs in the game despite Sup Forumss constant shitposting
Because maplestory 2 was an enormous flop in korea due to poor release scheduling.
They expected maplestory 1 not to shutter, but to slowly bleed to maple 2. But the opposite happened. Maple 2 launched, had a huge amount of people, but they released 5th job in the same 3-month period, and maple 2 got to a point where even the single digit channels weren't full anymore.
People were also mad about blatant p2w stuff, namely how you could get top tier, best in slot gear by paying real money for elixirs to use in guild pvp.
They've fixed most of it now, but it's like 3 years later, the game barely has players in china, even though it's a lot easier to access than the kr version for english speakers, there are STILL no large english groups.
I'll just say this in regards to all the "b-buh voice clips" shit. They had a job in 2015, before the game launched in korea, posted on the nexon NA site, looking for graphic artists, and community managers for maple 2. It means nothing until the game is actually out. Beta means shit either, look at kart rider. Most successful online driving game worldwide, hundreds of millions usd annually, and they decided it wasn't worth releasing stateside.
Nexon NA is incompetent. They're basically a tumor on the rest of the company.
ah well Global MS1 honestly has no where to go, mobas hype train is done, and pubg has died down too while fortnite is still in its stride but whatever the fuck MS2 is could possibly be the next thing ppl jump to when they get sick of lol/dota/ow and pubg/fn. or if they still like those games, MS2 would be a great alternative for when they get shit on in the other games and ragequit
>Nexon NA is incompetent
On that note, why every north American section of any Asian game company is incompetent? It's like they want their games to fail.
>And it doesnt help that the game is very VERY shallow
Fucking this. Gankers are are absolutely useless in this game because any attempt of ganking is negated by a single button press. The META basically revolves on which team has the better teamfight.
because they have to adhere to the SJWs in hopes of a broader audience.
Because most of them were established in the early 2000s when korea's mmo market was about to boom and have literal teenagers who never finished high school but had rudimentary knowledge of korean heading them.
NHN made ijji, pmang partnered with nhn which is why you had shit like ava and huxley coming out there too
nexon had nexon na
aeriagames collected from a lot of less known publishers
ogplanet
gpotato
it was the wild west, but like 75% of the staff on these western servers was still in korea, which is why lotso f games had patches in the middle of the day/primetime, during the KR work day. nexon na still follows that, actually, it used to have it's own staff and programmers, it had to scale back due to massive failures of the last like 8 titles they've tried to publish.
the american market for kr mmos is just a disaster overall, really, nexon is the only one that was ever remotely professional, and after the success of maplestory and mabinogi and audition in the west, nexon kr let them too far of the leash, they hired klei to make sugar rush, then shitcanned it at 97% completion a month before launch, after a massive nation wide 7/11 campaign, no less. Then they stopped supporting audition, which got 0 updates for almost two years before t3 (redbana in the west) bought the rights back from nexon NA to publish in the west, then did so, and that shit's still running, with garbage engrish music and STILL doing better financially than it ever was under nexon NA.
Nexon KR saw how bad nexon NA was fucking itself, and said "here we'll give you literally the most profitable title we have, the most played game in the entire world, most profitable too, dungeon and fighter. It's fresh from our takeover of nhn, don't fuck it up".
And they fucked it up by taking a bunch of liberties to nickel and dime. It didn't help that the west despises stamina systems (or did at the time anyway) but 90% of people who wanted to play dnf by that point had.
And because they had, they knew exactly how the game was supposed to play, because in all of asia, it was identical besides some versions just being further behind KR, and japan getting lots of annie may crossovers.
So when it came stateside, we were YEARS behind the kr version in updates (still had the punisher priest which was hilarious) and avatars were randomly given to us, and couldn't even be traded for a good while after launch.
It was a literal abomination, and I don't think it ever once posted a quarterly profit for the NA branch of nexon. Not once.
>adhere to people who dont play the game, or at the very least dont purchase micro transactions since they stop playing in a week
wew
holy mother of god, what Nexon NA did with DFO should be considered a crime
more like diaper universe
shitty unbalanced korean free to play grindfest. cute girls though.
Remembering the nightmare that was DFO under Nexon's watch is painful. Anything that could be done to make the game bad, they did. They even stole Maple's awful paid free market sit and sell shops. It's no wonder the game failed under them.
I really want to share stories about how bad Nexon was with Maplestory, but really it's completely obvious to anyone who played at any point how bad there were. Remember how they took Neo Tokyo, which was the only end game content we had gotten in a good while, then nerfed it for no reason?
yup, nexon NA got way too comfortable resting on the laurels of maples success. It was always run poorly compared to the japanese and korean versions, and even the SEA version I would argue, though that changed around big bang.
More than anything, it's weird living in korea now, and seeing how serious they take online gaming. How many failsafes there are, how much shit you have to do to sign up (granted it's not too much after you do it once or twice, get your little wifi egg, pop up a otp, sign in on ipin, relay info to publisher site to make account)
But I never see bots. If I do, I can report them and they're gone in ~5 minutes. I reported a vac hacker on gms back when I last played, when the onyx jaguar mount made it's appearance in gms, and that guy was sitting in sahel 2 from when I was there at level 70 to level 203, over the span of like five days. It was ridiculous. That was what made me just not want to play anymore. It was so bad and it only got worse as I looked around higher level areas, people were just blatantly, unashamedly macroing or botting while afk.
in KR when that shit happens, you throw a lie detector at someone. Bam, they're gone. Reports actually work, they communicate with the players outside of just the bbs, it's so good. And there's SO many more players, so it's not even some sort of "oh well there must just be 3000 people playing or something" thing, there's usually 20,000 people playing kms at any given time, upwards of 40 during primetime. And gms? Barely scrapes 5000 primetime. And they can't manage to police that many?
infuriating. And saddening. Mostly saddening because I made so many friends on maple and I still make friends on maple, but nexon na just stopped caring about the community at some point.
well put

Why bother shilling a dead game?
The western gaming community has set "MUH CENSORSHIP" as its no-budging hill to die on, and endlessly shittalks any game that has even minor changes that don't matter to the gameplay. Really is the devs' fault for not knowing how stupid their audience is.
If the change is so minor and is irrelevant to the gameplay WHY DID THEY MAKE IT.
Because the devs are stupid and don't know their audience. They expect their audience to be stupid in terms of "hurr there's too much sexiness going on here," but the audience is actually stupid in terms of "THERE'S .000001% LESS TIT JIGGLE I'M WRITING A BAD REVIEW AS WE SPEAK."
>everyone who ever talks about video games on this video games imageboard is shilling
