>What exactly makes indie games bad by default?
Nothing but it's basically like people who boycott all unity games. There is really not anything inherently wrong with them. It's just that their is a massive amount of low quality indie garbage out there so some people just consider them shit by default.
>bad by default
this isn't true
that's a loaded question, especially considering that you posted a good game
>bad by default
what?
what?
>what?
Good?
There's nothing that makes indie games bad by default except Sup Forums being full of newfags since it got raped by board splits and shit like the whole GG/Fappening fiasco.
For every indie game that's actually good , there are a thousand shit games that all get praised for their shitty "quirky" 8 bit artstyle than the actual gameplay itself
Say something!
pisses me off seeing people say Undertale has a a similar look to Mother
No it fucking doesnt, Mother had consistent art
i;m giving u p on you
>HAY GUISE REMEMBER THE 80'S/90'S WHEN GAMES WERE REEEEAL
>OH EM GEE WE R LIEK SO LE QUIRKY
>DON'T FORGET TO BUY OUR T-SHIRTS, FIGURINES AND MUGS AT YOUR LOCAL GAMESTOP AND/OR HOT TOPIC
It's basically weaponized cancer at this point.
but my game isn't 8bit style, not a side scroller and I'm concentrating on gameplay before graphics.
Shovel knight was great.
wat?
They aren't, and to nip this particular argument in the bud, Shovel Knight isn't even what you'd refer to as 'pixelshit' considering it actually knows what an NES game looked like, and replicates it very well while admittedly cheating a bit in the case of certain limitations that they don't need to abide by on modern hardware.
>That shitty fake """8bit""" they use that makes the characters look like starving Africans
I hate it so much
List great indie games.
Shovel Knight
The Binding of Isaac
Super Meat Boy
Spelunky
Hotline Miami
Hollow Knight
soybrain
Divinity: Original Sin
Dragon Commander
Killing Floor
Stardew Valley
Terraria
Minecraft
Witcher 3
Subnautica
how are any of these "bad by default"?
>Shitty pixel art
>Shitty meme simulator
>Shitty tumblr story
>Shitty "Original" sountrack
>Shitty pop references
shovel knight looks fresh and the gameplay is nice
Honestly this.
The thing about 8 and especially 16 bit games is that they pushed their limited hardware as far as they could to look like a lot more.
FAR too much of the indie market is filled with things that restrict themselves as much as possible to have a pixilated art style.
Shovel Knight is one of the few games that hit that feeling.
>dis nigga
Nothing but there’s a bit that makes your post bad by default
Nothing?
I think a good approach to making "retro-stlye" indie games is to make it actually able run on old hardware.
Because people with real talent and real resources by defination are not part of an indie team. If you're a good artist or programmer you can get a job at a company that pays good. If you have real resources you'd build your own company and make the game you want with real artists and programmers.
Indie is a bunch of artists that can't make art, working with programmers that can't program, with no or totally incompetent managers, working with no budget. It's always going to be shit. Even IF they get their money from the kickstarter they don't have the talent to use the use the money well.
People in general like indies so Sup Forums contrarians suck AAA corporate dick now. That's about it
>Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun
>West of Loathing
>Stardew Valley
>Gonner
>Nex Machina
>Shovel Knight
>FTL
>The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth
>Thimbleweed Park
>Divinity: OS1 and 2
>Downwell
>Cloudbuilt
>Darkwood
>Crypt of the Necrodancer
>Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime
>Hollow Knight
>Don't Starve Together
>Duck Game
Indie games have been real good to us
Bad developers.
>If you're a good artist or programmer you can get a job at a company that pays good.
Is that why a few Wayforward devs left the company to form Yacht Club?
I wish.
>no Dankest Memegeon
To add to this. If by some freak accident a good indie team does form. Do you know what happens? One of two things. Either they form their own company and stop being indie. Or they end up joining a real company.
>Either they form their own company and stop being indie
How the fuck are you not indie if you develop your own games independent of a publisher? Do you know what indie means?
remember when Sup Forums liked shovel knight and undertale and isaac and meat boy and hotline miami and hollow knight and stardew valley and terraria and bastion and ftl and limbo and cuphead and cave story and papers, please and darkest dungeon and axiom verge and nidhogg and enter the gungeon and n+ and crypt of the necrodancer and defcon and kerbal space program and braid and into the breach and prison architect and dwarf fortress and transistor and machinarium and hyper light drifter and subnautica and superhot and guacamelee and dustforce and game dev tycoon and huniepop and a hat in time and lethal league and OFF and LISA and battleblock theatre and castle crashers and La-Mulana and marlow briggs and nitronic rush and slain back from hell and dead cells and super cyborg and volgar the viking?
because i see these games discussed literally all the fucking time here and have for years. so when the fuck were indie games bad by default again
Why would you describe Sup Forums as contrarian? Don't you think that because anyone can post here anonymously there would be people with different opinions? Besides, if you made a thread about any of those games you'd definitely find people who like them and not too many people who hate them I think.
I can only assume you're ignorant about indie games because you haven't played any good ones.
>Why would you describe Sup Forums as contrarian?
Nigga that's been the Sup Forums way for ages
Let me put it this way.
If you work for a real company here is what you get
>stable pay. You get bi-weekly checks. You aren't worried about running out food money because the kickstarter failed
>opportunity for advancement
>a real resume you can take anywhere
>higher earnings
>getting to work with REAL talent and learn from them
>getting to work in a real environment instead of organizing everything through skype calls
They value high production values over everything else. Nuanced game systems and mechanics, good writing are hard for casuals to appreciate. Indies are able to fill a niche since they don't have to expect millions of sales to make the dev time worthwhile. Casuals will always stick to shallow, accessible, AAA games
The fans.
you're wrong
You're lying, you faggot nigger!
Let me put it this way. Do you think Nintendo is indie?
Nintendo owns multiple game studios you dumbfuck, they're a publisher
If you want to say self-publishing is indie. Nintendo is indie. So is crow-team and crytech.
>lament that big publishers like EA control what gets made
>indie devs finally get a platform that lets them make exactly the game they want without having to make it more/less gamey or more/less casual
>Sup Forums: REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE BAWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW THEY WANT FREE MONEY FOR NOTHING
Your shit taste
>Tumblr story
What exactly is that picture supposed to be saying, because if you're trying to show me something I'm not seeing it
>those fucking stairs
yeah? what happens when being a contrarian becomes popular thing to do then? modern Sup Forums is under so many layers of irony, that they are being contrarian to the contrarian ways
Indie games are casual. Look at Super Meat Boy and every other side scroller they ever made. It's designed around check points which feel like save-states and infinite lives.
And they mechanically are very simply. They can't even match the complexity of side scrollers of the past.
I mean you're not wrong
good indie developers starts with their good game then get hired
lurk more.
it's not about people showing their "true opinion" here, it's about people saying whatever they feel like, no matter how stupid it is, and not having any consequence to it. nothing to stop shitposting beyond mods which, good luck trying to moderate 1000 posts per minute.
if you want proof, look at all the threads about people getting banned for shitting up chats in online games and crying that they didn't think they could get in trouble. there's several every day. it's that stupid "nothing i say has consequences so instead of saying what i think i'll just act retarded" mindset.
>wanting to be a fucking cog
>Implying working for a large corporate developer is something to be desired
nigga just won a game of solitaire
What's so great about Spelunky?
At which point they stop being indie. Which is why, by definition, indie devs are bad. The only one's that stay indie are the one's that are so talentless they can never work at a real company.
REEEEEEEE ALL INDIE GAMES ARE BAD I WANT AN INDUSTRY CRASH REEEEEE
You know what teams do that don't want to be a cog? They form their own company and do what they want. Or even better. They work at a company, the company recognizes they have talent, they get promoted to a team leader or director. In both cases they get their vision.
Indies cannot fufill their vision. They have no money, no talent, and a team of incompetents so they can't even make the damn game they want.
>tfw indies and AA Japanese games are keeping gaming from going to shit
Pretty decent Art direction
Nice music
>They form their own company and do what they want.
So they become indie
>every studio is indie
If you have real talent and don't want to work for a big studio you form your own big studio (like the Star Citizen guy did). But indie fags do not have the resources to do this because they have no talent or money (and they have no money because they have no talent)
by this logic, we shouldn't be buying any games at all because most AAA and AA games past and present, and likely future are garbage.
I’ve lost track of how many layers of irony I’m on
They're just lesser than AAA games. The scope is smaller, the game mechanics are simpler and there's less content. If you think I'm bullshitting, ask yourself how many indie games you'd pay $60 for.
So is crowteam indie?
Ask yourself how many AAA games would you pay $60 for as well
The massive amount of them makes sifting through the garbage for gems unbearable, it's easier to just dismiss them entirely
It's a meme.
The word "Indie" is pretty much meaningless as corporate produced titles get called "Indie" all the time while true indie games with a higher budget don't make the list. They're basically just PS4 trolls who want you to buy Skyrim again.
>Outing yourself as a casual who wants to be told what to play
Eww
Because they lazily bank off of retro games without getting what makes those retro games good. Seriously, every indie game I've played just feels like a soulless cash in of a better game.
I dunno, even if they’re cheaper I seem to get better value and longevity out of indie games than most AAA shovelware.
>man, you have no budget and are probably doing this as a hobby. Why can't you do the art, programming, sound and marketing at a professional studio level?
>better yet, if you can do one, why can't you do all the others? I thought you were smart, user
Lots of indie games are great, for what they are. The problem is that the Indie market as well as mobile games are drawing in professional developers so that instead of pushing more AAA titles they are now making mediocre shovelware crap and marketing it as "pixel art",retro", "roguelike" and shit like that. It's making game developers lazier, while in the past it was all about pushing technical limits.
Just look at the fact that a company like Square enix is publishing garbage like "I Am Setsuna"
That's all?
Some games do this really well, but the whole "Side-scroller pixel platformer" and "low-poly minimalistic walking simulator" theme is really becoming played out and tiring
>every indie game I've played just feels like a soulless cash in of a better game.
What indie games do you play? Is every 2D game trying to be 'retro'? Is an entire genre effectively off limits because it can't be made modern?
You're right, SMB is casual while trying to market towards "hardcore" gamers. It's not surprising a popular game is also accessible. Try a more niche title next time, okay kiddo?
Perspective is hard.
>The word "Indie" is pretty much meaningless
Correct.
It's a word you throw onto your game when you don't want it to get critisized
gamers: "Your game sucks"
bad developer "No you don't understand it's indie! You shouldn't expect it to be good!"
Did anyone ever figure out what this dude was saying? Or are we still stuck on "guy bang" 9 years later?
>gamers: "Your game sucks"
>bad developer "No you don't understand it's indie! You shouldn't expect it to be good!"
Yes user I too enjoy placing fake people into the fields to scare away the crows
>man, you have no budget and are probably doing this as a hobby.
Which means you suck at it
>Why can't you do the art, programming, sound and marketing at a professional studio level?
Which is why people don't give a shit about your game. Because real companes are better than you
>better yet, if you can do one, why can't you do all the others?
What sort of retard tries to make a game by themself? Indie fags. Thats who!
Do you realize how many indie developers/artists are former/current studio developers/artists? Sure, there's a lot of really shitty art school dropouts and people who couldn't handle their CS major, but a lot of the people doing game jams are doing it for fun and to enrich their career.
Same reason why software developers tend to contribute to open source projects, it has the potential to be enjoyable and you get to add features to make your life better in the office.
Are we just talking about video games now?
Spelunky is fucking great user, just learning how to get through each area is the best. Mines are easy but the jungle fucked me up for days when I first played, god I love that game.
