Sonic Robo Blast 2 threads usually die fast, but this is an influential milestone for fan productions. Before your little Touhou fan thingies, before your crappy Blender and Python Sonic projects, before your half-assed UE4 Nintendo remakes, we had Sonic Robo Blast 2.
Sonic Robo Blast 2 was originally a Clickteam Klik-and-Play/The Games Factory game, which became a heavy modification of the DOOM Legacy engine. For twenty years, this game has seen constant development, leading with fan creations/mods, a forum, several dozen versions, online events, the creation of many other fangames, and more.
How does Sup Forums feel about this anniversary? Currently, Sonic Team Junior has been working on Sonic Robo Blast 2 version 2.2 for a while (about 4-5 years now). Do you have any SRB2 memories? Do you like or dislike the game?
Literally 10 years ago. Made some of my first friends from other countries on there. My first exposure to Sonic autism too, with people's edits and recolors and fucking Mystic.
Are the forums still active?
Ethan Peterson
you can't just make a srb2 thread without showing off the latest trailer for the upcoming version
I never actually played it but I've seen it a lot on & off throughout the years, I'm glad it's still getting support and can't believe it's that old already, where does the time go?
Samuel Reyes
This looks fun. I haven't been into Sonic since S&N3. But the reason is because the 3D sonics just never had appeal, it just didn't have the same things that made Sonic "Sonic" it seemed.
But this looks good. Does it have a release planned?
>20 years What the fuck, I only barely remember playing a demo for this ages ago but I had no idea it has been that long.
Aaron Rogers
No Fucking Slopes
Elijah White
in-game and functioning, but the base levels haven't been updated to use them yet, there are two level compilation on the main forum though that are using them
Slopes were added like three years ago ahead of 2.2 with the new Sonic art style and animations. Slow to the party, eh?
Christopher Wood
Forgot to say they're not properly integrated into the game. For the Sonic, you'll have to download him from the forums (like Knuckles from 2.0-2.1 like 6 years ago). Slopes are only for custom stages right now.
If you watch the new trailer for 2.2, you can see that basically all of the characters and stages are getting revamped from scratch including Tails. A graphics and physics overhaul are also happening. Something that was long needed, because Tails has had his sprites for like 18 years now and Sonic has had his sprites since the game first came about. Not to mention the great upgrades to the engine.
David Harris
Nice. I don't follow this games development cycles but I've been waiting on slopes since I heard they announced them. I just can't get over that they got actual working slopes in the doom engine with physics and everything. Can't wait till they release it for the main game. I really hope the code is easily adaptable to other doom mods because doomguy needs to be able to do crazy tricks with momentum off slopes too
Gabriel Young
This mod is older than some people posting in here, let that sink in.
Gavin Gutierrez
>it actually looks decent What the actual fuck how have I never heard of this?
Justin Garcia
Jeez, I remember playing this with my middle school friend almost 10 years ago, we'd do a ton of dumb races and PVP shit on absolute toaster monitors. He had me install Hamachi and XFire to talk, what shitty clients those were. I think he still plays it actually, I might hit him up to go a few rounds.
Justin Young
Got it for free on a magazine cd when I was 10 in like 2005. Was pretty impressive for a fan game. Thank god i never succumbed to sonic autism though
Austin Carter
Does this game have loop-the-loops?
Asher Fisher
Xfire was the best.
Juan Bailey
>there are kids that are legally allowed to browse here now that weren't even alive during Sonic Robo Blast 2's second year
Magazines liked to put a bunh of demos and shareware on their discs because it's something. I wouldn't have found out about it any other way. This is 2005 we're talking about. It made sense to put free shot onto cd's just to get exposure because most people still werent reading game news websites and I wasnt a big fan of sonic anyway.
Nathan Morales
Sup Forums background music should be set to Arid Canyon zone
Josiah Kelly
Arid Canyon Zone Act 1 is legitimately a great tune
Brody Sullivan
>Hamachi Holy shit what a fucking trip. In the 1.09 days, I remember using ooVoo to chat with all of my pals. Which are no longer pals whatsoever. They got into this huge feud about shit that didn't even matter and now every single one of them hate each other. I want to cry.
Chase Thomas
No. If they could make physics like that work in SRB2 I would be amazed. I remember there being mods with loops, but they were all scripted for you to automatically go through the loop when you touched it. The same way that with like 2005 mods, slopes didn't exist so we had to use very little stairs that almost looked like slopes.
Aaron Nguyen
And it's still easily the best 3D Sonic game.
The franchise should be given to a new team because Sonic Team continues to prove themselves as hacks. Even Generations sucked, despite the constant shilling. On rails bullshit.
It's seriously been that long? Holy shit, I still remember the first time I learned about it. I played it maybe once or twice before dropping it altogether but I'm surprised they're still getting support even now. Maybe it's time to play again... if I can get over my fear of water stages.
Benjamin Fisher
Please mods. It's Sonic's year. God-tier fangames, Mania remastered, it's time to let the blue blur shine.
>SRB2 >Mania >Utopia the fan game revolution begins with a bang. now if only we knew when 2.2 gets released so we could set something up, like a massive multiplayer clusterfuck for Sup Forumsirgins to fuck around in and increase exposure of the game. anything to make the Sonic World devs wake the fuck up and realize their game hasn’t gone anywhere while srb2 ascends to heights once thought impossible in the bloody doom engine of all things
Owen Torres
is this Sonic Adventure 3
Luke Miller
It was already out before adventure 2 even existed. Sure, it was a piece of shit back then but hell it’s been Adventure 1.5 for a while now
Lincoln Cox
never heard of it, but it already looks so much more playable in 3D than the actual official crap
Jacob Perez
The current version’s controls (2.1) take some getting used to since the main movement scheme is tank controls, but you can enable analog mode for 360° movement. It’ll take some getting used to, but I personally find that using arrows to move, Z and X to jump and spin, A and S to strafe is the best non-first-person scheme
David Sanchez
>Clickteam/Klik-and-Play/The Games Factory
God damn that takes me back. I think I remember this game. I actually played Sonic fan games back then. I also vaguely remember a spooky black and white Sonic game in the same vein. Possibly Halloween themed?
Carson Cook
Tell me about SonicTweaker
Nathaniel Perez
you just reminded me that 4 years ago someone made a srb2 thread on here and a few hours later there was this thread on the official forum where some retard whined about the controls
Sonic Adventure Zero. It came out before SA1. It would be better to call it Sonic Xtreme ReduX or Sonic 3D Blast 2.
Alexander Hernandez
Eh, more like Sonic X-treme: Doom Edition.
Nicholas Reyes
Using a controller with SRB2 (especially the Steam and PS4 controllers) is really good. It'll take getting used to and is probably harder to master than a keyboard due to Sonic's slippy movement.
Sonic World is trash because it is made on the piece of shit Blitz engine, which stole popularity from SRB2.
>3 SAGE in a row Holy shit. Isn't there usually like 2 year gaps? I don't remember SAGE 2015. It's really upsetting that most SAGE games from past the 2010s are totally fucking missing. I wanted to look at some old titles for memory's sake but it's hard to dig up shit.
A game called Sonic Axiom from like 2008-2009 I remember being a really good 2D Sonic game, but every time I try to execute it from the .rar it says that some solid trojan is in the installer.
>Using a controller with SRB2 (especially the Steam and PS4 controllers) is really good. It'll take getting used to and is probably harder to master than a keyboard due to Sonic's slippy movement. If you are having trouble with slippery movement, try the AutoBrake script from the forums. It will make you automatically stop when you let go of the movement controls.
Axiom has really solid level design for a fan game. Arguably one of the best. The music and art are all not original and the enemies/bosses are barely functional and don't really animate.
Jayden Lopez
I remember hosting servers to play full runs of the game with other people. That shit was so much fun, I wish I could go back
There are usually more people on in the afternoons.
Brayden Ward
Version 2.2 might have, but it wouldn't have been technically feasible to create back then anyway. They just recently figured out how to implement proper slopes, which is why most of the level design is getting an overhaul for 2.2.
Nicholas Roberts
Aaron (pr guy) said before to look out for a stream on the 22nd.
Bentley Gutierrez
Ah, thanks for letting me know.
Samuel Thompson
>PC gaming
Joshua Gray
I played the fucking shit out of this back in 2007 and made tons of friends. Too bad I lost contact with literally all of them. youtube.com/watch?v=pMzYnOs1hsY
Joshua Hill
Why the fuck are you playing this instead of an actual good game?
I remember good time fighting in CTF and Matches using knuckles as my main, his shooting speed was incredible, can't play any other games like Overwatch due to how slow and less fun it is.
Sadly stopped playing it due to lack of time and lag in servers are really awful, due to my timezone, mostly BRs playing with 300-500 ping on my end.
got huge nostalgia for it,used to play the shit out of it when there were only 3 zones. found all emblems, played multiplayer basically did everything possible in the game. music was top tier and somehow sonic in the doom engine manged to be top tier comfy. sadly never bothered to play the newer releases.
Well Mania would've been shat on for being too much of a rehash in its current form. But then, if it had been released for the Saturn, it probably just would've been Sonic 4 with all new Zones. And even THEN some reviewers would slam it for being "more of the same". It's really hard to say how it would've worked out, but I know it's better than a compilation and a half baked racing game. (And I like Sonic R for what it is, for the record.)
SRB2 on the Dreamcast would've been really neat as long as Iizuka stayed far the fuck away from it with his multiple playstyles garbage.
