Because you can't always breeze through them with an OP build.

because Sup Forums is casual

I love roguelikes. I just dislike all of the minor UI decisions or leftovers from draconic traditions that make them more tedious to play. The ideal roguelike would be even faster with nested levels of automating aspects of the game you're no longer interested in doing.

They require zero motor skills and are boring unless you're disabled.

But I love roguelikes, especially this one.

Attached: 1396737939504.jpg (528x800, 234K)

I need my roguelikes to be insanely gimmicky, like IVAN or Elona or ToME in order for them to capture my attention.

Oooh.
How good is it?

this is a very good game

>get multiple limbs
>your second pair of gloves/boots/shield(s) don't do anything
WHY

I like it.
Although jesus christ Chitinous Pumas are fucking cunts to fight against.

I lile roguelikes, I don't like autistic "press autoexplore" simulators.

because I can just go play Rogue and have a better time

i concur

>if it doesnt require motor skills its boring

I guess you use sign language to speak because using words to communicate is boring too
respect

Attached: 1512743003348.jpg (640x585, 73K)

if you want to play anything other than an esper, its no fun allowed.

are you sure nigger

>entertainment and communication are the same thing
wat

It's pretty fun, like a mix of roguelike gameplay and rune factory features (you can build and manage farms, ranches, shops, museums, and of course your house/mini-village/palace/etc) with a "build-your-own-waifu" feature (customize appearance, dialogue lines, AI, teach her how to make breakfasts, etc).
The game is weak in some aspects, like the limited dungeon design and the default "Mack-style" graphics (if you played too many RM2k games), but the game, especially the "mod/expansion" (Elona+ Custom), have tons of stuff to do and kill, and it's very easy to modify every graphical element, from items to waifus (there are tons of fan-made stuff on sites like Pixiv).

Only numales make and enjoy roguelikes.

Attached: soybiskup.jpg (127x218, 15K)

I like Elona

Love it because you can play them in short burst. I like the rouge-light enter the gungeon. Dont get why I dont hear more about that game. Its bretty good

I just realized most of my favorite games require little motor skills, maybe because I'm such a lazy piece of shit

it's decent but honestly Binding of Isaac and Risk of Rain blow it out the water, so does Nuclear Throne.

It just comes up short compared to other games it's inspired by.

is Dungeons of Dredmor worth getting into? Ive had it in my library for ages but never got around to play it
I like the sense of progression in roguelikes(and lites) but im a pretty casual player and appreciate the graphical UI

Attached: dredmor.jpg (1280x720, 112K)

no

Honestly if you want a roguelike with graphics play Tales of Maj Eyal.
Dredmor has little going for it beyond the flavor text.

Because usually you can't grind and if you get bad luck with drops they can be impossible to finish no matter how good you are. A well designed game should be beatable every time by a good player.

I like open world roguelikes like CDDA and Elona, though.

t. shitter

I've only liked Necrodancer and Stone Soup.
Gungeon is boring as fuck, I regret buying it and Risk of Rain is also boring when you're just playing it by yourself.

There isn't much to "get into" in Dredmor. It's a fun little game, but the gameplay is very simplified, even with the "build your own class" thing with the multiple skill sets. It's designed to be a babby's first roguelike with jokes everywhere as a bonus.

This. Amazing ambient music. Best mix of asci and tiles Iv ever seen in a roguelike.
Interesting and original world.

because I keep getting invested into my character, play it for hours, just for the dude to permanently die, then I feel sad.

i have 3.4k hours on my elona+ save file

im still waiting on that elona sequel that noa is working on
dude hasnt posted any updates since steam took down the greenlight thing

Attached: 1451063141778.png (1280x1024, 358K)

Who the fuck plays Elona with permadeath on

Just play with savescumming like everyone else.

speedrunners and scorefags probably

losing my fucking stats after hours and hours of stat grind is bad enough

DCSS and DDA are the only roguelikes I care about. Ultimately the failure of RLs is that they require too much time to even begin having some kind of fun. The control scheme itself is like learning a new language, and then you either die 10000000 times to understand the game, or read 1000000000 guides to achieve the same goal.

>playing roguelikes with savescumming
What's the point then?
Also save scumming in roguelikes is a very annoying process.

There's some crazy fucker in /jp/ who has made several god killers playing with permadeath on. It's fucking mind boggling.

but i love binding of isaac

Thats the whole point of roguelikes, its about the tension which comes with never being safe. I mean, you did get sad about losing a small @ symbol. Did you ever give a shit about dying in Souls games?

wew

i had to drop my save after hitting act 3 because ive died about 4 times now because shit kept insta-gibbing me

>Did you ever give a shit about dying in Souls games
never played them.

Not him do you have any recommendations for "graphical overhauls"?

It makes it all the more cathartic when you do manage to clear the game and knowing what it took to get to the point. It's the small victories along the way, like managing to clear out certain branches of the dungeon, getting your first rune and shit like that. Even if you die to stupid shit later, or, by some miracle, you pull off a win.

Attached: MeshiaLXVI Win.png (1526x848, 365K)

that's not roguelike

Music feels unsettling for some reason. Tiles are gorgeous. Gameplay is fun. Buy my mixtape

With permadeath, you will be able to understand the true meaning of love when your wife saves your life with synchro-heart/absolute-protect/lay-hand so you can cast teleport and run away from that ground-smashing titan.
You will also learn the true meaning of pain when she gets killed by a horde of kamikaze hard gays because you forgot to cast water spells or alchemical rain. Or when she gets impregnated by aliens because you forgot to give her anti-rape panties, that is also awful.

Attached: 1482677442955.jpg (840x525, 523K)

nigga I got my first rune years ago, yet I am still incapable of getting more than like 3 of them. Once I got as far as one of the Hells, but I can't even regularly clear the dungeon - orchis mines - lair with a Gargoyle.

Just play MiBe you fucking faggot

I don't like them because they rarely strike the good point between being preparation-starved, and the amount of tools player gets to deal with the situations he encounters. Particularly ways of acquiring quality stuff, and controlled teleports compared to getting downstairs into a crowd of paralysis-breathing succumeduses or summoners summoning summoners summoning etc.

You either are pressed to get ever forward with game getting harder and harder like most or roguelikes like C:DDA which get easier with time since you're rewarded for getting prepared. Being discouraged from prepping makes them feel unfair and making it too encouraged makes them feel easy.

Attached: the face of s u f f e r i n g.png (453x565, 142K)

we should make another genre called J-rogues just for elona and other japanese roguelikes due to how grindy they are

Attached: a yamabiko comes into view.png (581x583, 120K)

MiBe is just a viable as GrFi I usually play.

MiBe is easier.

My Elona mods are "hand-picked" from my adventures on Pixiv and ElonaUploader, but "Chinese user" is fairly nice.
Check the modding pastebin on /jp/'s Elona thread. Most packs are considered "outdated" but all you need to do to update them is to compare the character/item/face files with the vanilla ones. If you see something new near the unused slots, copy-paste the new stuff on your modded files (use the same slot).

>OTab of Trog

Attached: 420 year old witches.jpg (3340x2382, 1.79M)

>imagining going trough shoals without permanent flying
>imagining going trough the serpent cavern without poison immunity

Are you sure? I know Gargoyles have low HP, but their AC levels up with them.

HEROES OF HAMMERWATCH IS FUN YOU SHOULD BUY IT

not a shill just a guy who's sunk 10 hours into it in one day

play any roguelikes lately?

i really really rally really really like darkest dungeon
it is my favorite roguelike!

Attached: BRUTAL AWOO.png (473x508, 25K)

For the first one just avoid the water and kite enemies, it's easy, for the second one there's a pretty good chance you'll get rPois eventually, if not, it's not bad either, MiBes have a lot of health and as long as you don't get horribly poisoned with low health it shouldn't be a problem.

I've played GrFi and I've found it harder than MiBe.

Just picked this up. What are some good mods?
More customization options is always good.

literally every single mobile thread will have "pixel dungeon", nobody hates it but its boring if you have better options. and on mobile you really don't, you can pick up and play a roguelike easily. there is also unnethack on android

mystery dungeon style roguelike

check the /jp/ thread or ask /rlg/
i think they have a link for a database full of custom sprites and shit

how the fuck can you people even play rl's on a phone i cant stand it
pixel dungeon is at least designed to work with the phone

even a shitty 10+ year old laptop can run most roguelikes
just play on that thing

I staretd play DDA since I saw Seth's review and I like quite a lot.

I still can't get into crafting and not playing op characters

What makes it fun?

>learning mind control and dominate
>teaching your pets dominate and mind control as well
>your pets can have pets that has pets that has pets

See for graphics.
Play Elona+ (the biggest Elona's gameplay mod) and install Custom on top of it (English translation, customizable ally AI, other extras).

But I like nethack, brogue, cataclysm dark days ahead and elona

stone soup is the only one i can stand playing for more than 1 hour

I fucking love Elona but despite playing a ton of it I still have no idea what I'm doing for most things I still have yet to reach the south

i actually dont play roguelikes
the truth is that i just play the rogue-class on any game possible and just call myself a roguelike player

Attached: 1498927293386.jpg (512x512, 60K)

Been playing DCSS on and off. Started Qud and Cogmind but couldn't get into the latter, it emphasizes stealth. Love DoormRL to death, waiting for Jupiter Hell, I can't even recall when I pre ordered it. Want to try Azure dreams and Cataclysm next

Is elona+ good or should i stick with vanilla?

Reported.

Kinda easy if the creator took phone controls/keyboard into account like there was this one nethack for iPhone years ago that used swipe controls which was pretty amazing

because the games are turn based and therefore not hindered by bad control schemes.
>even a shitty 10+ year old laptop can run most roguelikes
a shitty 10+ year old laptop can also play superior games. you could emulate up to playstation 1 and play games up to 2000 on even a netbook easily. roguelikes are just deprecated, most people wouldn't play a roguelike over even a roguelite such as diablo and im convinced most here are just experimenting and will come to the same conclusion i have when i went through that phase

You should be using Elona + no matter what from what I've seen

fucking love this post

ever tried Doom RL?
not the user your replied to, but you made me smirk

YOUR
BUILD

Elona+ is basically an expansion for the vanilla game.
If you want to just play vanilla for some reason, play Elona Omake since it fixes tons of bugs.

Sil is amazing, you guys should play it.

Cogmind - lots of depth but the gameplay is a bit annoying (security levels)
DDA - lots of content but no depth
Dcss - great bread and butter, but too many senseless changes
Doom RL - amazing style and gameplay, but feels hard even by RL standards (no hp regen)
IVAN - an absolute blast to beat from start to finish, nonstop hilarity

Thats how I feel about some of my favorites

id recommend elona+ for beginners because of the added hyper mode difficulty
its very good for beginners just to get yourself used to the flow of the game without worrying about the tedious grindan

t. cuck

There is only broken or Challenge run characters in DDA

>im convinced most here are just experimenting and will come to the same conclusion i have when i went through that phase
Next time you can just save yourself the effort and everyone else's time and say "I have autism and can't understand why people like things I don't"

what?

Apparently the dev confirmed that Elin is on development hell some months ago. He is working on that island survival spinoff now, so don't expect new info about Elin in your lifetime.

I think he means there are either easy mode or hard mode characters with nothing in between.

i found an RL on steam during a sale one day

its called yodanji
has a very nice youkai themed aesthetic
very very barebones, 4-way movement, very limited inventory, gear is limited to charms

Yeah i've tried doom rl (and sucked at it) but i'd rather play the actual game

tell me why then someone would prefer randomized level design over something deliberately designed to be good? and don't say something like replayability, there are thousands of great games and you don't have to play one game over and over again to have fun

I always do lairs before mines. Hydras aside, there's less bullshit, like orc priests smiting you for FREE DAMAGE whenever they have line of sight.

The only real reason I can think of to play original Elona at this point is if you want to make an utterly fucking broken living weapon through save scumming and name scroll use, since Elona+ fixed how you could just re-roll level up bonuses to not get the bloodsucking stat you inevitably got without fucking with name scrolls.

Don't like it

could you give an example of elements that would be automated?

>Hydras aside
just use a blunt weapon. I usually specialize in flails from the very start because of those fags. If I find a really good weapon that's not a flail/mace... I might consider changing.

seven+ attacks every turn can still be a dangerous as hell. At least using a blunt weapon gives you half as much effective skill in axes... I think? So you can go lop off some hydra heads with a fire-enchanted axe if you're lucky enough to find one.
>lernaean hydra

Because some people like randomized stuff, for different reasons (yes, replayability is also one of them, get used to other people's opinions already). For example, there is a certain "charm" in being unable to figure out what is going to happen in your next step, it makes both preparation time and last-second decisions have a bigger impact on your survival.
