Romances in vidya have nothing to do with the game itself. It's about creating the feeling of "love" for the player who is likely to be one or more of the following:
>underage
>lonely
>fat
>ugly
>autistic
>stupid
>girl
It's not about making a good story, it's about simulating the feeling of falling in love.

Romance permeates almost every aspect of a normal person's life in some way. It doesn't make sense to leave it out of a game about people.
