Bob insisted on mainstreaming Chris instead of having him sent to a school that's actually trained to help kids with autism. Bob told Chris to mooch off the tugboat forever instead of getting a job. Bob threatened to sue the Greene County School Board, Michael Snyder, and anyone else he thought had wronged Chris somehow. And in his final years he started to buy into Chris's crazy conspiracy theories like Megan being the leader of the trolls.
To be fair, I think Bob at least tried to do what he (incorrectly) thought was best for Chris, as opposed to Barb who simply didn't care. Nevertheless, he had as much of a hand in Chris's shitty upbringing as Barb did.
They also didn't attend his funeral.

Trying isn't enough. Sometimes parents think they are being supportive by throwing stuff at the kids, but ultimately fail to help them learn proper patterns of behaviour.
I wouldn't say that Bob's failure as a parent is a major cause for Chris's failures, but he really never struck me as a man who truly handles situations smartly. Hell, just look at their hoarding-hell of a house when he was still around. Or that time he threatened to cut down the internet. He basically came to Chris, said "get that stuff out of there!" and walked off. He pretended to have authority, but he was nothing that could've given Chris examples of working as a functional human being.

Barb was the problem from the start. None of Bob's family liked her and he chose her over them. Did he actually like her, or was he just trapped because they had a kid now? I don't know.
Either way, Barb took out a second mortgage on the house and drove up her credit card bills to the point she's been sued multiple times. It's pretty obvious she's shit with money and spent whatever Bob maybe have had saved up. She even borrowed against Chris's life insurance policy. She's set Chris to be worse off when she dies, and I doubt she cares. Barb doesn't give a shit about anything or anyone but her horde.

He didn't try, that's the problem. He mainstreamed Chris instead of acknowledging that his son had problems. Chris was never going to be a success, but with persistent training, he could've been taught to restrain himself and probably been able to perform some low-level job and support himself. Chris is too fucked up to hold a job, even if he tries. He'll behave badly and draw negative attention to himself until he gets booted, and now he has a horde of obsessed trolls who would flock to wherever he worked and generally cause problems.
