UI could've been better.
Game doesn't save loadouts on soldiers.
PSI is OP as fuck.
Soldiers are too expendable.
That's about it.
A glitch made the sequel ungodly difficult
Turn-based combat on large maps with too many soldiers and aliens is slow and boring.
not on Gameboy
open ufo is better and have mods
It's not TFTD.
The novelization.
User Interface
anime aesthetic
There's no reason to play it instead of modern XCOM.
was it autism that made this post?
>UFO defence
>anime aesthetic
???
here's a reason: free aiming
here's another: all turns are in Time Units instead of every soldier having 2 "actions" that can range from a light jog to shooting a revolver 7 times
It's not xenonauts.
But I really should play the originals again. Are there any good quality of life mods? I legitimately don't know if I'll be able to enjoy it past the UI and the controls and everything after xenonauts.
xenonauts corrected any and all flaws. Only contrarians disagree.
That's incredibly wrong. modern xcom is a very different game. The change to squad size alone makes them play incredibly differently.
Buggy as shit
It's not TFTD
The intro did have an anime aesthetic desu... although as you know it didn't translate to the game
Other flaws:
Game discarded all loaded ammunition after a mission
Can't open doors without walking through
Unless you want to play a game where your gun shoots bullets instead of dicerolls
Unless you want to play a game about managing line of sight and physical cover rather than hoping the defense buff you get from cover is enough to stop enemies from shooting you through walls (which they try to constantly because AI is garbage)
Unless you want to play a game where enemies don't get free turns to flank you when you clearly ambushed them
Unless you want to play a game with a freeform non-linear campaign progression instead of being railroaded into the only research progression that makes winning the game possible
Unless you want to play a game that simulates a war rather than just being a poorly designed SRPG
OpenXcom fixes those and most bugs and problems with xcom
>GI Joe
>Anime
>railroaded into the only research progression that makes winning the game possible
UFO did the same thing, dumbass
Aliens can't provide return fire in response to grenades are shots from out of their FOV, which is easy to exploit in all but the most cramped quarters.
Old-Com Best-Com
Xcom is comic aesthetic dumbass, not anime
The only good thing to come out of nucom besides dr vahlen
>the intro
>ywn wink at a muton before blasting him and his faggot pals with a minigun
Actually it's been so long I can't remember the name of the "minigun"... I know it's TFTD equivalent is the hydrojet cannon. Anyway my point still stands.
i cant find any
I can't, it's literally the best in its genre and none of the sequels come close to its perfection
>save scum: the map
>hide and go seek: the map
>play one mission
>lose funding everywhere
>feel bad
and you can fix all of it with openxcom
only way to safely do these maps was to bomb your way through.
>There's never not a bio drone in the kitchen: the map
Has anyone done a real-time mod for openxcom yet?
Auto-cannon, and it's shit
OpenApocalypse is coming soon so that's probably as close as you get
maybe i'll finally fucking beat xcom apocalypse
that shit is my white whale
>Deep One freezes the game: The Map
I want more Templars
Having to search out the last enemy jacking off in a shed somewhere was pretty much the only complaint I had with the game.
I remember beating it a long time ago when it was new, but i could never do it when i tried again years later because all of the bugs made me want to shoot myself i cant wait for open apocalypse
My psyker is afraid of psykers
But user, the xenos have no genitals
I was too much of a brainlet when I was 14 to beat xcom apoc, and when i tried again in my late 20s I just didn't have the time. I'm coming up on some vacation time and I been meaning to crush my backlog but instead I think i'll get some catharsis by beating this
I fucking loved this game
Unclear fog of war.
GI Joe was made by Toei, a Japanese company.
The cover doesn't represent the game.
The animation was done by gooks, but the IP was American, weeb faggot
You can speed up the turns.
and Hasbro
and Marvel productions
and Sunbow productions.
unless you show me the cold hard numbers of how much exactly is made by toei, you can't claim it is anime.
The graphics suck
The aesthetic was great, and besides some bugs and how broken your soldiers could become in real time (Specially melee) it was a pretty good game, hell it felt more like Xcom2 than the nu-xcoms ever did
needed more maps
openxcom has infinity maps
I played both recent games, and while the first is kinda fun, the second removed way too much stuff, especially that you can create a weapon and everyone will get that weapon
I really like how the first gives you the tools to micromanage stuff at your will, like having two squads in different parts of the world, giving you the chance of doing every mission you want
Micromanaging (and slowness / clunkyness) are my main issues with X-COM, though I still like the games despite those flaws. I usually prefer games that let me watch / read something while I'm playing, a5nd it can get pretty difficult to do it while playing UFO Defense / TFTD.
Base UI is dogshit.
There's no zoom in tactical
>There's no zoom in tactical
Oh, man openxcom would blow your mind. You can even increase the line of sight.
this makes me hard
Nope, once you have Laser rifles you're absolutely free to move anywhere through the tech tree and still complete the game on tactical skill since all terror missions become feasibly beatable
Not to mention you aren't absurdly restricted in scientist count, and are capable of researching multiple items at once
I play opexcom, but it's been some time since I've touched it.
Can I now zoom with the mousewheel or equivalent?
*Breaks your game*
And Late game is a cakewall
You can set zoom level in options. I don't know about mousewheel though. You could mod it.
What are you on about? You can do that in Enemy Unknown as well
I know that. It's extremely tedious to change it back and forth, I'd really like a dedicated zoom button.
I don't have neither the knowledge nor the will to get into modding openxcom.
>Shit interface.
>Mind control is too easy to acquire and breaks the game.
>inventory system
>buy the game on steam several years ago
>have to pirate it anyway because OpenXCom doesn't want to work with my steam copy
Anyway, thanks to this thread I started a new Iron man run on this shit
>Not going to Cydonia without using a single Psionic character
I've beaten XCom multiple times over the last 20+ years and never used Psionics once.
>going to cydonia with a completely full team, no armor, and plain rifles only
probably the most fun I ever had beating this game
Now do it in TFTD, Superman, Ironman
Nah, I play this game pretty casually and enjoy it a hell of a lot. I really, REALLY like art style of this game. It's sad that NuCom and Xenonauts screw this up.
Why it's kino ?
youtube.com
>large maps
Damn I remember spending so much time on these missions.
out FUCKING PALYED HOLY SHTYIO
*missing intensifies*
*reaction fire intensifies*
I'm pretty sure, he doesn't have enough Tu's left to shoot
It's been a really long time since that happened, if i remember correctly he had only tu's for 1 snapshot and he missed
They didn't know how to discourage players from camping organically, so aliens get permanent LOS on all your troops at (or was it after?) turn 20.
Psionics are stupid broken. If you remove psionics, the game becomes easier early game and harder later. If you leave them in, late game is mind-numblingly boring. So both options kinda suck.
It's an old game that's been solved due toreadily available information that's let me pin down the optimal way to play and means I think less when I play x-com then when I play XCOM.
Still a 10/10, and modding really has given it new life and depth. Can't wait for Phoenix Point.
It's funny because that's what happened.
I should get the images from that playthough from the old drive.
Is there a point to buying armor? I always play the whole game with jumpsuits cause it doesn't feel like armor actually makes any difference. Your dudes die in one shot, always
only after turn 20 to avoid dead locks
I tried to make a compilation of Sup Forums's playthrough names but i'm missing some of the oldest since my computer died at some point and i lost them
those where all i could get
Overalls > Armor
The graphics are shinier and cleaner, but it feels 2sterile4me. My dream game is XCOM with FFT/Tactics Ogre-level sprites
Yeah, anyway, it's a shitty mechanic that's never explained. I know why it exists, but it's still a very band-aid style fix.
Nah, armor makes a huge difference statistically. First off, consider friendly fire and explosives. Basic personal armor means your standard weapons pretty much can't hurt your own guys. Power armor means that concussion launchers and alien nades don't kill 5-7 people, maybe just one guy with a bad roll, but he might survive. Power armor can let you survive a direct plasma shot. Flying armor gives you great mobility and makes you impervious to Melee enemies.
There's not shortage of cash and resources in game, so there's no reason to field troops without good armor.
maps are too simple
it's fucking disgusting UI
