I know exactly why it is done. It hits that middle ground where Americans think something sounds foreign while still being in the English language. But it has been overdone to the point where it has become a cliche. If every fucking fantasy game does something, it is no longer unique. It would be more unique to have a fantasy game that didn't pull Cockney/Olde English.

The game doesn't need voice acting at all. They could have released it in the west simultaneously. Instead, they're gonna take over a year to add voice acting and really bad accents, which half the fans hate. And makes the general audience think the game is for babies.

The only time a "straight" translation is bad is when it's actually not a straight translation. It's a dry translation. All translations have to change things from the original source, simply because you can't directly translate from Japanese to English. The question is, how much is the translation changing stuff. Is it just changing the sentence structure, or is it changing the original intention of the words?

The Dragon Quest games have horrible translations because they don't just translate the original content. They go many steps beyond that and start adding in puns, dialects and "westernized" jokes that the original author never wrote. Yuji Horii didn't write the Zenethian Dragon as a satire on Ned Flanders. Nor did he make Alena a bad Russian stereotype. These were added by the middle man localization team. And are an extreme disservice to the game. They're effectively saying that they don't think the original games story can stand on its own, so they took the initiative to change it to something they think would be funny or cute.

So you're defending these translations as being better is effectively saying you prefer their vision of what the game should be over the original authors.

You didn't post an example. I asked you to provide an example of a game that has been translated with a "straight" translatio and was bad. Instead, you just posted an image of a Japanese game without showing the translation.

And if you're trying to claim FFVI was better because of the "son of a submariner" translation change, that's just dumb. It also overlooks the tons of other examples from the same game where there's tons of things lost in translation. I also notice you didn't post something from games like FFVII, VIII or Tactics, which have such bad translation errors they have caused conspiracy theories from fans over what the intended meaning is.
