Even when I feel like I didn't do well as Soldier, I still find myself top of the scoreboard, is this indicative of my own skill, the incompetence of the average pubber, or the power of Soldier?
Soldier is the most fun class because he's self-sufficient. It's why I play Soldier. I know the game is called "Team Fortress" but you cannot rely on pubshitters to get anything done, which sucks because every class except Soldier is reliant on their team's efficacy to varying degrees. But Soldier can do anything, with the right loadout you can get results and become a one man army.
Soldier is the most versatile. There's never a bad time to pick him. Throw gunboats on and you don't even need a medic

Demo is just generally good in most combat situations, like scout and soldier. They're not overpowered, the specialists are just bad. More steps like the Gunslinger need to be taken to offer more versatility to the specialists. Spy just sucks, though. You should really be asking what's the point of spy when sniper can get picks and not die immediately afterward.

Soldier is basically the most effective class in the game. He is so easy to use that anyone can be at least useful with him and that is pretty much the reason everyone uses him to this day.

Unironically I think that 90% of medic mains are the worst. Girlfriend medics, Battle medics, Uber knights, medics that can't protect themselves or pop too early, shit like that.
