So apparently while Microsoft has been busy working on new ways to lock users into their increasingly closed ecosystem with the hostile to PC gaming 'S Mode', the Linux community has been plowing ahead closing the performance gap.
This is honestly the first time I can think of that the Nvidia Linux driver has outperformed the Windows driver in a D3D11->OpenGL port. As for the AMD driver, the open source Mesa drivers just continue to be able to flat out smash the Windows driver especially in the apples to apples OpenGL tests. The only tests where AMD is even competitive is in Vulkan where RadV is still catching up in features and hasn't optimized much yet.
>those horrible minimums Optimization isn't just about getting the highest FPS, it's about stability too.
Jace Wood
The Linux drivers are still dealing with GLSL compilation instead of pre-baked shaders like you get on Windows. SPIR-V bytecode support got added in Vulkan and OpenGL 4.6 but not all the games (especially the older ones) have that yet.
Cameron Fisher
Is the Ubuntu version visually identical to the Windows version? there were previous cases of Linux games running better than their windows ports but those almost always turned out to be games that don't have all graphical features on the linux version, so of course it would run better. Shadows don't display properly in Insurgency Linux for example, so since the game doesn't render shadows it has a higher framerate.
Also, a handful of older CPU bound games at 4k don't really amaze me. In mainstream scenarios it seems like Windows still has the advantage, even with Vulkan. Linux still has a ways to go.
Connor Thomas
Good. We don't want you. Go back to Sony.
Julian Rodriguez
So um, like, basically...
Elijah Rogers
I fucking miss Club Penguin
Jose Moore
>He is so fucking addicted to taking the cock from corporations he can't quit everything Let me guess, you are americuck. I bet you can't stop watching tv or listening to music either, right? gotta be brainwashed day and night like a good american. Bet you you can't even turn everything off for 5 minutes or you would kill yourself, lmao at your life.
Ryan Reyes
OP, the problem with tests you show is that often certain visual enhancements are disabled on Linux which affects the performance. Afaik Bioshock Infinite was one of these games.
Joshua Carter
>Is the Ubuntu version visually identical to the Windows version? Yes. You're talking about back when the Linux games often lacked tessellation because MacOS couldn't handle it, but now game devs are usually targeting Linux first and using the more advanced features.
>In mainstream scenarios it seems like Windows still has the advantage, even with Vulkan. It will be interesting to compare Rise of the Tomb Raider Vulkan vs D3D12 now that the Windows-exclusivity deal is finally ending.
Isaac James
Jesus user calm down. Everything is ok.
Brayden Rogers
me thinks you replied to the wrong person
Austin Morris
What share of games is playable by now?
Parker Hall
I know that Metro Last Light's initial release lacked tessellation, and Bioshock may have lacked some features initially. I'm pretty sure that Last Light's re-release and Bioshock have all the features enabled now. Apple staying at OpenGL 3.3, and now 4.1 for years past when they were obsolete really fucked over gaming outside of Windows. Now that the ports are increasingly OpenGL 4.5 / Vulkan first, with the Metal API on OS X that's been changing.
Can you even play java minecraft in linux? that's my main vidya
Gavin Sanchez
No kid. I am saying he is so addicted to using electronics he can't stop because he is afraid of sharing 5 minutes with his horrible self. And most of you kids on the internet probably are. Better make sure you can run from yourselves with phones, mp3 players and internet and tv, so you can ignore how bad you really are.
Bentley Robinson
About 25% of the entire Steam library, about 40% or more of the most played / highest rated games. Outside Steam basically anything older than D3D10 is playable, and D3D11 era games have been making massive strides in support. Momentum had stalled a bit for a while there after the Steam Machines turned out to be devkits rather than end-user targeted systems. Now Microsoft's shitty moves lately have brought more good news for Linux.
Colton Brooks
Yes, its been playable on Linux since the start. Since before Microsoft decided to try to force their shitty mobile/console version on 10.
Julian Moore
The fuck is S-Mode?
Also the problem is DirectX. We need a convertion layer for it to play older games that only have a DX option. Drivers for Linux have been pretty good for awhile.
Though W10 has problems with earlier editions of DirectX so if Linux pulls that off it would be the superior gaming platform. One can hope.
I'm fucked either way because decent 3D design software is almost entirely windows.
Carter Wilson
Remember to take your nitros grandpa
Levi Walker
>>The fuck is S-Mode? only allowed to use things directly from the windows store
Christian Long
>performance gap
Why the fuck does it matter? Until the companies start announcing "linux-compatible" in their advertisement I'm pretty sure that it doesn't matter
Isaiah Peterson
>25% of steam games >40% of most popular games
I'm sure those pixel indies and walking simulators are going to make people make the switch, huh?
Leo Jones
does it have video games?
Dylan Cooper
That sounds more like something they would do for a work computers to help with security not something that would be forced onto the average home computer.
W10 is still shit for gaming due to its compatibility problems, but I can't see them being that stupid.
Juan Hughes
>The fuck is S-Mode? The new default mode in an upcoming update to Windows 10. It will remove the legacy compatibility layer that allows win32 applications (everything outside of the Windows Store) from being able to run. Microsoft claim that users will simply be able to turn if off and get the compatibility layer re-installed, but that is exactly what they said about DOS support when they first removed it.
>We need a convertion layer for it to play older games that only have a DX option. DXVK is a dll (can be used by Wine and on Windows) that makes games talk to a D3D11 driver written on top of Vulkan, instead of the one provided by Windows. It is significantly faster than Wine's old fashioned D3D->OpenGL wrapper, but still missing features needed by some games.
>I'm fucked either way because decent 3D design software is almost entirely windows. Really? Basically the whole professional 3D business in hollywood runs on Linux.
Not enough yet, and it probably never will. Really wish it did, because I really like Linux. It was my daily driver for nine years, but then I switched to Windows entirely because I realized that I had been spending more and more time in my Windows installation to play games.
Jack Brown
What compatibility problems? I play old games just fine, I remember 7 having way more breakage.
Noah Nelson
>I can't see them being that stupid. if only
Nathan Young
>Switch to linux >Lose all your files from windows >Lose your savefiles from emulators Yeah nah fuck off penguins
Nathaniel Bennett
They're that stupid, or rather they're not underestimating their users stupidity. They know they'll only lose a few percent of users. Even if every Steam user switches, that's less than 1/4 of the Windows user base. The users who are left will generate far more revenue than running an open platform ever could.
They aren't compatible you absolute retard Kill yourself
Christopher Ramirez
I remember the DOS loss and it caused so many problems. Back then there weren't really alternatives but now that would be so damn dumb.
I'm aware of some conversion like the one for mostly DOTA2, but last I looked they are pretty underwhelming. Has this changed and they are good now? I'll dual boot for that.
>Really? Basically the whole professional 3D business in hollywood runs on Linux. I'm not talking Blender (which eats ass in its controls anyway) more 3D printer, Solidworks and Fusion.
Christian Rodriguez
>Lose all your files from windows >Lose your savefiles from emulators What? We can use all the same file types, you can even read them off the same disk drives. Windows can't read Linux file systems, but Linux doesn't have the same forced limitation. For emulators you just have to make sure its looking for the saves in the right place.
Justin Nguyen
using 8.1 >you didn't' switch to 10 for free?!?! >see this shit yep, the golden rule of never switch to an os less than 3 years old is holding up.

It's only the default mode on specific devices being marketed as chromebook competitors, user. Not everything is a grand conspiracy to take your video games.

Last I knew most of the pro stuff was available, though they may be locked behind enterprise licenses or other similar crap like requiring you to ask for it. That's still pretty common unfortunately.
Carter Bell
>Nvidia Linux drivers being good what the nigger
Camden Ortiz
7 did due to the change in file system from one shitty format to another shitty format true. But 7 had fixes and was open enough that things that didn't get fixed could be fixed by fans of games. A year or so in and I could google a fix to just about any game.
W10 on the other hand took DirectX, a system entirely conceived with the idea of compatibility and fucked up its compatibility. You won't get it on all games, but some just eat shit on W10 because its use of old DX versions is usually bastardized.
Lincoln Perez
>It's only the default mode on specific devices being marketed as chromebook competitors No, that's already changed like I said it would when they announced those. 10 S is no longer a separate crippled version on a single device meant to somehow compete against ChromeOS (a full fledged Gentoo based GNU/Linux) Its now going to be the default setting or available as an option in every new copy of Windows 10.
They're even now talking openly about dropping the compatibility layer completely. Lamely discussing virtualization as a solution putting them in the same situation that many Linux users are in.
Elijah Young
It cant play mp3 and mp4 and jpeg files?
Bentley Watson
Wow. Why have I never heard anyone mention this? This is LITERALLY the end of video games on PC and it seems it's going down without even a fight. Fuck this planet
Jaxson Jenkins
>This is honestly the first time I can think of that the Nvidia Linux driver has outperformed the Windows driver in a D3D11->OpenGL port. That's nice, but it doesn't mean shit if it doesn't have games.
Benjamin Wood
>WINDOWS IMAGE FILES What's that?
Matthew Jenkins
Yes, it's going to be an option on every copy of Windows 10. No, it's not going to be the default on every device. It's going to be the default on the same sort of devices that use it as a separate OS version now. None of this is even happening until 2019.
>They're even now talking openly Then you should have no problem providing a source, because everything else just seems to be you freaking out about some hypothetical doomsday scenario.
Colton Edwards
If you have so much willpower why don't you quit Sup Forums right this instant?
Luke Bell
>&num=1 Stopped reading right there. Seriously though, I'm happy to hear that open source drivers are doing so well. Hopefully vulkan can continue to get more interest in it
Landon Foster
Most of the user base is in denial, and Microsoft buys a lot of ads. You'll be hard pressed to find an article about it that isn't gushing about how much more secure it will be, and how Xbox games from the Windows Store are so great.
William Morales
Windows shit usually isn't standard. Internet explore optimized html code isn't standard, microsoft messes with it so it doesn't run on other explorers on purpose. So I am saying saving images on windows shit probably does the same thing to fuck them up. I haven't tested it yet but I'll do a loonix install one day just to see how bad it goes, then penguins will get butthurt and probably say i am retarded or something.
Ian Long
LibreOffice reads MS files just fine. In fact it does a better job of it than trying to go between different versions of Office.
Save files are also pretty universal. Most file formats aren't platform specific. I use about 4 different OS regularly for work and gaming and all the storage is server side to trade it between them.
Nathaniel Wood
that sounds pretty bullshit. If i have problems and corruption just converting files over on the same system, doubt you really don't have issues over multiple platforms.
Dylan Kelly
Independent devs will be able to create a way to restore the compatibility layer on the user's end after microshill kills it, r-right? Otherwise we are all seriously fucked
Two seconds on Google, and there's a lot more where that came from. Microsoft can't stop talking about how great deprecating and removing the 'legacy components' will be at reducing their work load and simplifying things for their new generation of developers.
>None of this is even happening until 2019. So what happens after 2019 when 7 is EOL in early 2020? Are we just supposed to hope a new PC gaming platform is ready to go the day Microsoft decides to push forward with their solution to the open platform problem?
Brody Thompson
This. >open office uses open standards file types >other word processing software can read it just fine >Microsoft uses closed standards that they update every few versions to prevent other word processing software from using them >open office can't read them >Wow, open office is shit!!!! Fuck, everyone just using open standards world be so nice for everyone involved, but MS needs to try to push their shit onto the rest of the planet.
Alexander Ortiz
That's the problem you retards. Nobody is gonna fight the microdick. Nobody is gonna stop using microsoft shit, they are too used to it.
Jeremiah Mitchell
>So I am saying saving images on windows shit probably does the same thing to fuck them up. >I haven't tested it yet but I'll do a loonix install one day just to see how bad it goes
Not sure where to even start on that one. Have you ever taken or downloaded an image on your phone and then transferred it to your Windows machine? Ever done it the other way around? Phones are Linux or BSD machines. Internet servers are Linux or BSD machines. You're making up problems that don't exist.
Mason Walker
Its called a NAS. And ZFS is god tier as an anti data loss file system.
And the LibreOffice think is also true. Just open and hit save as, and pick what you want. Figured this out because I had family using older forms of Office and sending shit back and forth was mangling the formatting. Using it as a middle ground worked like a charm.
Majority of programs are the same between all the systems anyway and coping over ethernet is pretty reliable if you aren't buy junk HDDs.
Jaxon Powell
>open standards are hard to adhere to
Parker Reyes
I'd jump to Linux if I could play FFXIV and BDO.
Gavin Edwards
Microsoft doesn't want people using standards they want to GOVERN WITH A FUCKING IRON FIST you fucking idiot
Levi Long
There's already people running Wine on Windows 10 to get around the compatibility problems. DXVK and a few other similar projects are working on re-implementing high-level legacy APIs on top of Vulkan which is practically at the layer of drivers internal APIs in the form of a drop-in dll. Then the only danger is Microsoft has talked about disallowing Vulkan drivers on Windows.
Mason Morales
I mean, I like Linux, but good lord, it like almost every linux usar has that communist agenda over windows being an evil bourgeois
William Foster
What is Steams response to this?
Daniel Foster
MS has pushed legitimately good shit before. This issue is they currently have trend for force feeding diarrhea and I don't understand 99% of this topic because I'm an OS noob.
Dylan Cooper
LibreOffice can read their 'closed' standards just fine. Its better at it. The x in docx is just an xml formatting file.
>govern with an iron fist I know this, but everyone ELSE can use open standards, even within Microsoft's own office software, at no extra cost + compatibility between their office software and all other office software. There is no reason to get call me a an idiot, especially when I said in the post you originally quoted, that MS was trying to push their standards for exactly the reason you called me an idiot for Google search 'why I hate Microsoft paper' find the link that's a PDF from antitrust.slated.org. it's ~75 pages of why Microsoft is fucking scum There was awhile there where LO couldn't read MS stuff though, since their developers need to go through the effort of reverse engineering. It was awhile ago though, you are correct
Jace Cox
hope this mean games get ports for linux and this may help the Atari VCS to be viable. ..... If any of this is even worth a damn at the end of the day.
Angel Roberts
>Swap to PC 'masterrace' because I've been made fun of for years for playing console >Extensive list of graphical settings available, nice >See 'lock framerate at ___' option and set it to lock at 60 for smooth, buttery fps >Set all settings to ultra/max, set resolution to 4k even though I'm only on a 1080p monitor because why the fuck not >Play game >FPS stuttering like a fucking slideshow, hovering around 4-10 fps average >Check settings and FPS is still locked at 60 >Play again and still get 4 fps even though I have it supposedly locked at 60
>What is Steams response to this? You're talking about S Mode?
Well we know that Microsoft had a behind closed doors meeting with Valve years ago, after which they announced Steam for Linux and released all of their games for the platform and started urging other developers to do the same.
We know that Microsoft made the rounds again recently (the rumored buy out offer), after which Valve hired a bunch more Linux developers.
Alexander Martinez
I don't know Steam's response to this in particular but they've been getting ready for, and even supporting, the push towards linux gaming. store.steampowered.com/linux
Ryan Lopez
Whats the point in them even doing that? Just seems retarded.
So they tried to buy and close down Valve/Steam? Bastards
Anthony Morris
So you're fucking stupid and blame it on external factors. Please stay on whatever console you think is better
Easton Baker
So should I Steambox or Linux? Which has more games?

There's good practical reasons. Win32 is a massive pile of shit with bugs that people coded around making them impossible to fix. Its a huge mess that an increasingly small aging population of Microsoft coders know, and nobody wants to deal with it. Those bugs that became features also make properly securing Windows a nightmare that Microsoft no longer wants to have to deal with.
There's also the evil reasons. Removing win32 gives Microsoft a ton more power and control over their platform, more even than Apple has. The music industry style 'time to re-buy your applications' churn is similarly going to generate a pile of revenue for them for the foreseeable future as people replace old systems.
