Is there a sidescroller that can't be faithfully converted to 3D by doing the simple action of adding a Z axis? Why do so many developers struggle with it?

you never know why until you actually try it yourself

camera

are you fucking retarded? you think it's simple to add a z axis?

why don't they just add a Z+ axis and make a 4D platformer

3D World is a prime example of that not working.

why

what are you talking about you absolute braindead moron for one thing going from 2d to 3d requires completely different level design tell your mom you're grounded and dont ever post on this website again

Because there's nothing perpendicular beyond 3D that we can comprehend
You can't just swear a lot and say that you know what you're talking about

do the character and objects get to move along the z-axis? its already getting complicated

WHOA DUDE HOWS IT GOING

Sonic Adventre is completely, totally different from the early Sonic games. If Mania allowed Sonic to move in the third axis (Similar to the 3D Segments but more fleshed out and with controls more similar to the main game) it would have been fine.
Yes, why wouldn't they?

i didnt curse a single time in my post, and whether i did or not doesnt impact how stupid the point youre trying to make is.

If you took Sonic Adventure and made it 2D, it would barely be reminiscient of the original Sonic games.

Because it takes 3D platforming back to its pre-infancy, before the Mario game that figured out simply adding another axis wouldn't suffice, with its flat, horizontal, simplistic, 8-directional platforming, missing the entire point of the extra dimension. 3D World is like looking into an alternate timeline where Nintendo fucked up in 96.

Except it's a really fun and well liked game so maybe you're in the minority on this one..? If your entire argument is "It's really bad" and "It didn't work" then you obviously don't have any actual argument. They're just really different games that are both called Mario games. 3D World is basically just a normal Super Mario game in 3D, 64 is just a new game with Mario in it. I like 64 more but I also like it more than the sidescroller games, they're just really different.

posting again
let me humor you. if you don't understand how, even beyond technological issues, transitioning from 2d sidescrolling to 3d requires vastly different level design, just try to picture it. the viewable area from the players pov is completely different. even if we take the same level, like for example the nsmbu level you posted, and perform this thought experiment, its plain to see that this perspective shift alone completely changes the level.

The Sonic Generations 3DS Adventure level is probably the worst level in the game.

The only segment that worked was the lighthouse.

OP, there is a zero percent chance you are not either a child or severely developmentally disabled, and whichever is the case please leave this board and don't come back.

why don't they just remove an axis and create a 1D platformer

When I first looked at that image in the catalog, I thought that I was looking at a 3D Mario with a NSMB background.

I've never understood why Sega has such a hard time trying to make a quality 3D Sonic. The originals were about using momentum to interact with and traverse environments as quickly, fluidly, and stylishly as possible. There are several skateboarding games that exist that accomplish exactly that.

Instead of making games where you can interact and run through levels in several different ways (like a vertically layered skatepark) they just make incredibly linear games whose gameplay feels really shallow and heavily scripted (e.g. any game with the boost mechanic). I guess the skateboarding craze never really hit Japan, so they don't really have much of a base to work off of. Maybe they could make Sonic games that play like a faster-paced Jet Set Radio instead. Or just give us a JSRF sequel.

What an absolute travesty of an examply you chose to go with user.

This. 3D World is a fine Mario game.

its a fine game but dont let that distract you from the fact that what the OP is saying doesnt make any sense

>so maybe you're in the minority on this one..?
I would hope so. The bar for video game opinions is so low it got buried underground.

>If your entire argument is "It's really bad" and "It didn't work" then you obviously don't have any actual argument.
My bad, I should have said it's fun and well liked and invoked ad populum.

>3D World is basically just a normal Super Mario game in 3D
Exactly. It has no purpose. It could be played in 2D with hardly any difference, mostly thanks to level design being stretched and straightened out for multiplayer's sake. It's just 2D levels where you rarely have to switch directions.

I actually agree with you on all your points. But I still like 3D World and Land more than 64, Sunshine, or Odyssey.

one does not simply insert an entire axis

I think it's scale. The 2D levels are huge but still tight with different challenges in different parts of the levels. I think making massive levels with large chunks many players are going to miss is seen as costly in 3D. Also they're more open which leaves a lot of room for challenges to be circumvented entirely, or turned into waiting games.
