Which is the best Persona game?

Been dipping my toes in and have no clue whats good. Tried Persona 3 portable but quit after realizing no anime cutscenes.

Tried persona 2 but it was boring.

Just bought persona 5 and 4. Starting a bit of 4 and its starting interesting...

I've only played 4G and 5 and I liked both of them for different reasons. 5 has way slicker visuals, better music, and better mechanics but 4 had a superior group of friends.

Both have such insane time required to beat, which is worth playing more?

Im not a fan of turn based rpgs either.

Honestly, 3, 4 and 5 are all equally good, just in different ways. Its good that you stopped P3P tho, its way worse for a first playthrough.

I don't like turn based RPGs either, I played 5 first. I think 5 would be a better place to start because all of the other elements look and feel better and will help distract you from your dislike of turn based combat.

Play P3FES. It's the best version of P3, which is a great game. P4 is more upbeat and goofy than 3, which has a more somber and serious melancholy to it. Haven't played 5 yet.

I honestly can't imagine playing any of them without an emulator where I can speed up running around the dungeons.

Overall for me it's 4>5>3 with 4 being only slightly better than 5.

I played P4 and I didn't like it at all. Characters were boring and generic (except maybe Rise). I dropped it at the weird guy dungeon.
In the other hand I have played P5 for 20 hours and it's fantastic. Characters are a little bit more interesting and much more attractive. The story is much more engaging and the graphics are fatastic (while P4 looked like a poor PS2 game). The combat feels like it has been improved.

Major rewrites. The story is atrocious.

I love the game, but its entire premise is a setup for some asspull doppelganger bullshit. There is no way around it.

Not to mention the terrible post final boss dead time where literally nothing happens except for the game telling you what's happening off screen while you're in jail.

Is it bad that I got the PS3 persona 5 version? I have a ps4 but didn't really feel like spending $50 on a game I might not like..

The PS4 version is objectively superior but if the price difference was huge you're not missing out on that much by getting the PS3 version.

3 has neither a story or pacing.

They were actually friends in 4, not "our job is the phantom thieves, we're always talking about the phantom thieves"

1 is pretty rough now gameplay wise but it’s got a solid story with a great cast of characters
2 is improved on 1 in most aspects especially gameplay. It’s one of the better in the series
3 transformed the series into modern Persona but the gameplay can be highly frustrating with how little control you have over the party compared to every other game. Tartarus gets to be an irritating slog due to its procgen sameyness. Characters are pretty good with some exceptions
4 is a little more light hearted than the rest which is good or bad depending on how you like your stories and atmosphere. Interesting characters and though the dungeons are still procgen they are differentiated in theme enough to feel much better than 3.
5 brings back demon negotiations and old elements adding more variety to the gameplay as well as fully designed dungeons that are actually interesting to play around in for the most part. Much of everything is refined but the very end of the game gets to feel pretty laborious. One of the best in the series imo

I've played every persona, so it really depends on what you're looking for. Persona 1 is old school, story is scarce but intriguing and the mechanics are kinda experimental. It's rough around the edges but I think has lots of charm. Persona 2 is a more streamlined version of 1, with more focus on the story, though I think it's too easy for the absurd encounter rate, so if you want an old school JRPG with a good but slow story, it's your pick. persona 3 has a more thematic story rather than an adventure like the previous games, also extremely casualized most of the mechanics, so really you are there fore the mix of light/dark story telling. 4-5 continue the trend set by 3, though they go even more light hearted which I kind of prefer, with 4 being the most "fun-focused" of them all. Overall if you're liking 4, keep going. If even one of them sticks you'll be dieing for more

You’d have to skip some content and maybe cheese to improve the grind

I'd say 5 only because of how smooth everything feels. Going to the different locations feels instantaneous because of the contextual loading screens, dungeons have actual variety, switching out party members is easy, the story feels well connected. But Persona 3 has better characters and main plot. Persona 5 would've been the best if they made the villians actually evil and did fucked up shit. I heard they were going to but they didn't want a backlash from Japan politically because it was gonna be more about slandering modern Japan political system. Which sounds cool.

The only one that doesn’t is Junpei and he’s not even an S. Link. The only decent S. Links are your party members. I did like that their Second persona was unlocked through the main story and no annoying mascot character

Not that user, but Aigis' design and overall personality and behaviour is not as blatantly mascot-like as Teddie and Morgana. Big eyes, cutesy animal design, it's mascot bait. I really disliked Teddie - Morgana was more or less fine, if somewhat annoying.

I will never understand how people are able to stomach Morgana when it's just Teddie 2.0 who now lives with the MC, but without all the stuff that made Teddie interesting.

A big part of the issue is that in 4 and 4G, the dungeons are the minds of your party members, which lets you get to know them and help them through their issues before they join your party, which gives you plenty of time with them between Dungeons to hang out after you've familiarized yourselves.

In 5, you get the party member and they're suddenly very friendly with everyone else after a dungeon, but they never really take time to just hang out outside of the 'events'

I couldn't fucking stand Bienfu - on account of his English voice. It's genuinely painful to listen to. I always skipped his dialogue because of that godawful voice.

Teddie is insufferable but Atlus was merciful by making him stay with Yosuke.

Not gonna lie; Morgana's bullshit with "I don't belong with anyone" and running off from the Phantom Thieves just before Okumura's Palace was stupid. And as a character, sure, he isn't as interesting as Teddie. But Teddie's obnoxiousness was enough of a deal-breaker for me. It's not his character arc I'm criticising - it's his design (which gets rectified later on in the game thank god) and his mannerisms.

I mean that he was there as a cute critter that wasn't always in your face.

He's a straight up asshole to Ryuji. Ryuji is nicer to Morgana than vice versa. He just teases him every now and then - Morgana straight up calls him an idiot, a moron over and over, constantly demeaning him and acting all condescending. And then he decides to run off like a bitch instead of talking it through. It's stupid. The game's writing isn't perfect, for sure.
I also took issue with Yusuke acting VERY out of character early on in the game. He straight up blackmails Ann and says she's gotta do nude modeling or he'll screw them over. And it's never brought up again. Why?

Not even memeing, but an option to bang Akechi would even improve the story, in a low-hanging fruit type of way.

Grab a PSTV and play 4G. Probably the cheapest way to play a Persona game right now and it's my favorite of 1-5.

4 is very well structured, in my opinion. You have a clear idea of what you're trying to do from the beginning of the game but it obfuscates a lot of the details and is just a generally well structured murder mystery story

A ps2 and physical copy will always be cheaper what. Even cheaper, emulation.

To be fair, they rewrite Ryuji in the middle act of the game to be both WAY more stupid than in the beginning or in his Social Link, and much more of an asshole. He goes from gentle teasing with Morgana to actively choosing to needle him over the thing he's insecure about, and not apologizing when it's clear he hit a sore spot

Call it a buzzword if you want but I really love P3's atmosphere. Even in the happy moments there's this undertone of sadness to it. And the final month where they all know the end of the world is coming, the streets are filled with apathy zombies and cult flyers, and they've pretty much resigned themselves to making a hopeless suicide run is fantastic.

Ryuji in his Social Link seems like a completely different character at times. He's definitely much more likeable in it, and goes through this whole character arc of learning to slow down and think things through (although it's not exactly in your face). But it's a little aggravating when he seems to backpedal like you say at certain points and turns into this raging retard.

I just don't like the in your face massive eyes and massive head designs of the mascots of 4 and 5, it's way too on the nose for me. They feel like marketing material design wise, and nothing more. I don't get that feeling with Aigis or Koromaru.

You can walk around the game world, there are animated cutscenes, downside is that you cannot control characters and many quality of life changes from later games are not there. Tartarus is a slog and nobody will ever defend it, until he is completely out of his mind. Character control is modded, though, there should be ROM roaming around.
