Ninja Gaiden 1 would ask if you want to give up the way of the ninja if you died too many times, if you gave up, the difficulty would lower to Ninja Dog (can only get to this difficulty by dying) and the game would insult you for it, Ayane would treat you as inferior and give you girly ribbons to put on for stat boosts. She'd also give you her shop discount.
At the end of all stages, your ranking was always Ninja Dog, regardless if you played well enough to get a higher rank. You also couldn't unlock anything post-game in Ninja Dog.
