we stopped aiming for photorealism in favor of shitty graphical effects that blur the screen in 40 different ways

They started catering to casuals.

Many people argue that we are only aiming for photorealism instead of aiming for artistic expression which 'shitty graphical effects'(filters etc.) often express well.

Graphical leaps became smaller so the distinction became more detailed. We've got to the point where we focus heavily on the smallest things which almost every game fails at in some respect.

Autism

The new Nvidia Volta GPU will get us there

>started
They always were.

Honestly ? PC fats over analysing fucking everything, was never a thing on console before they started making that nit picking every little thing mainstream.

Art direction is always better than graphical fidelity. Every modern game that goes for something realistic looks like a gray/brown mess of filters and shaders.

I'd much rather have a game that just looks crisp and runs smoothly.

Uncanny valley

Raised standards due to a raised bar in technical quality, whereas stylized graphics don't depend remotely on the same requirements.
Same reason why Toy Story 1 looks like garbage with humans and backgrounds, but Incredibles is totally fine.
Admit you're mentally your grandparents and should stop posting.

Generational shift.

Things were simpler then.

>as never a thing on console before they started making that nit picking every little thing mainstream.

It only became a thing because Sony & MS realized their consoles weren't a massive step up from last gen so they tried to push 1080p/60FPS as a selling point

As someone who was actually alive in 1997, nobody fucking said that about video games; especially GoldenEye, which looked bad even for 1997 standards.

>The bit wars, the race for 3D, and console warring over graphics never existed before last gen because I started gaming in 2008.
Nah.

>People who censor swearing

>Nvidia getting us anywhere
Funny. But we all know that since Crysis 2007 PC hardware hasn't progressed graphics tech at all.

He's 12, he doesn't remember the Nintendon't adverts. Don't be too hard on him.

this is an old image

Gamers' collective entitlement increased.

Total Biscuit

I'm Catholic though.

People grew up.

They stopped using Pierce Brosnan's likeness, duh.

I want to believe, user.

People are unpleasable and they like to bitch a lot.

nothing. Your image is total bullshit.

>The old days
Keep improving graphics to stop making our games look like shit
>Now
Keep adding on effects to distract people from how shitty our game looks.

Ray Tracing will be nice when it arrives, but it'll be at minimum next console gen because none of the consoles could pull it off, so no dev will put in the effort. Even most modern PCs couldn't pull it off.

It's a step forward, but tech demos are usually ahead of the industry by 5+ years. It's easy to show off singular tech in a demo because a whole game doesn't need to also work, it being in a real game takes much more horsepower.

Journalists

>game with cutting edge graphics for its time vs game with outdated graphics for its time
gee I wonder which one will be praised and which one will be shat on

Games being boring garbage so people started focusing on irrelevant aspects like "muh graphics"

What if i told you that you can already play a game on PS4 with that tech?
The Tomorrow Children

We had better looking games in 2008 than we did in 2013

That's not true ray tracing, it's cone tracing. It's similar but not the same, and far less detailed. It's not a bad bit of tech, it does some clever things, but it's not the same tech.

The closer to reality something gets, the more the little flaws stand out. You know they can do better, so you demand it.

Now post 2007.

Nobody gives a shit, you're allowed to swear on the internet.
If you're worried about not getting into heaven for saying a "bad word" you shouldn't be saying them to begin with.

PC faggots are the only ones who REALLY care about graphics, they don't even care about games. Every time games are brought up it's
>muh frame rate
>muh fov
>muh resolution
>muh million other things only pc faggots even care about

He's not being serious you speg, it's a meme.

Attached: file.png (600x732, 589K)

Dumb shit, all of what you described helps gameplay.

It is that tech, just at lower resolution basically.
Regardless i think it is quite cool how they have real time reflections in that game that are real reflections.

What? I remember everyone sucking off gta when it came out for its Graphics

It's not lower resolution, it uses cones to trace and gets less detailed the further away something is from the reflection, unlike lines which have no thickness and so are always pixel perfect. It's a derivative of the algorithm but it's flat out a different technique.

>Muh [thing that directly affects eye hand coordination, animation quality, and
>Muh [visual clarity and ability to fucking see shit]
>Muh [full use of my monitor and the game's assets]
>Muh [things that directly affect game design, gameplay, and game quality]

okay.

>implying the stupidly huge curved retarded looking fields of view that get posted here aren't actually embarrassing

Golden Eye was more fun because they could pay attention solely to the gameplay mechanics because of being limited to hardware.

GTA V looks nice but isn't as fun as previous games because they care more about 'life-like' graphics and lost exactly what makes these games fun.

I would go outside if I wanted every game to be lifelike in graphics or gameplay.

Finally, I leave you with this quote;

Fuck it, I can't find the quote. It went esentially about how we need to stop aiming for realisitc expression and rather use our imagination because realistic is boring.

On Sup Forums? There were threads shitting on its graphics on the daily

And with that retarded FOV, I saw you before you could see me. GG no Re.

I thought the algorithm was the tech and voxel cone tracing was comparable to what checkerboard rendering is doing for a natively rendered framebuffer.

I bet you genuinely think anyone is triggered with a Hitler post in this board.

>people literally claim to ever need more than 4k

Wew, how sad and pretentious

>i have no argument so I'll just go full retard.
Never go full retard.

A few Anti Aliasing solutions uses the same algorithms but a different technique to execute it, mostly for getting a good accuracy to performance ratio. They're regarded as different techs though because they're not interchangeable and do distinctly different things.

I'd also argue it's different because cone tracing would look terrible in a less cartoony game than The Tomorrow Children and thus isn't very usable across the industry like ray tracing is. It's not a big deal either way I suppose.

>technology gets better

If you gave an english cavalryman from 1400whatever a copy of pokemon on the original gameboy and a solar-charged battery and it would be a fucking revelation for him but that shit ain't mean nobody to nobody today

Who are you quoting?

>announcing reports
hurr durr

Pc shitters

now imagine yourself 10 years ago saying that about 1080p

>video game writing has declined
>video game level designed has declined
>video game mechanics has declined
>video game has been about less gameplay since '06
>The only thing that has improved are graphics
I haven't gotten excited about graphics since 08 when I saw Crysis Project Reality.

That's because graphics haven't really improved since Crysis, consoles made sure it stayed around the same region

Everything looked like shit back then because the displays were shit

And modern titles look bad because every dev/publisher insists it's a good idea to make the game look 40x better in the trailer and insist it's gameplay footage

fpbp

>PC fags STILL clinging on to crysis as if it wasn't surpassed many times over since it was released
genuinely embarrassing

dude, the fucking nintendont ads were in fucking 89 and 90, BEFORE THE SNES HIT!

they couldn't carry that against the fucking SNES in fucking 91 because now nintendo had their 16bit machine.

that's not the first post, it's the fourth post, idiot

>it looks so real!
No one ever said this about gen 5 consoles. Fuck off.

Yeah which was one of the first "Fuck you, we're the best" moves in the industry, Sega was always trying to play they "we're more powerful" "we're cooler" "we're better" moves. Blast Processing was my favourite bullshit term because it does sound kind of cool.

I liked a lot of old Sega's advertising, it was really not very professional, in the sense that they kept goading and taunting, and so it was funny.

surpassed in what way? framerate? consistency of framerate?
