What's the best JRPG of all time?
What's the best JRPG of all time?
Lightning
Dragon Quest VII
Pokemon Pearl
>best of all time
How do we even go about trying to qualify in any objective way what makes the best JRPG. It's all just like opinions man. We can probably come to consensus on what are examples of good JRPGs and what are examples of bad JRPGs but:
>What's the best JRPG of all time?
Yeah that aint happening.
>Sup Forums will come to a consensus
People can't even say *insert Pokemon game* is the best Pokemon game without getting utterly shit on.
Chrono Trigger

Earthbound.
It's like Seinfeld or the film Airplane in terms of capturing the zeitgeist of JRPGs: It deconstructs the genre's standard tropes, and stands head-and-shoulders above its contemporaries, yet possesses a degree of character and polish that simultaneously makes it accessible to veterans and newcomers alike- even without knowledge of the synecdoches it attempts to invert.
Speaking of JRPGs are there any recent ones I should play? I don't think I've played a JRPG since Radient Historia. I gave up on the genre around 2010.
Provably shit opinion.
Final Fantasy 6, Chrono Trigger, Xenogears
Take your pick.
Earthbound is definetely the one I've enjoyed the most.
Maybe the Xenoblade ones, honestly there hasn't been much quality in the genre for a while.
Ar Tonelico.
Characters are alright, story is amazing, but the soundtrack is the best thing ever crafted by human hands within the sphere of video games.
Wouldn't want to spoil any of the tracks from the game, so here's some samples from a side-album:

Note: The songs are written in a fictional language; distinct from Nier in that it has its own alphabet, vocabulary, grammar, and even dialects. It's like an event more autistically internally consistent version of Klingon someone crafted explicitly for the production of sonorous music.
*Dragon Quest VIII
Final fantasy
Xenoblade Chronicles
Persona 5
uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
How is C3BU?
That girl looks cute.
You must be new here. user is asking for ideas of what to play next and you failed the assignment.
Breath of fire 3
t. 13 years old
what recent JRPGs would you recommend then if you think you're so good
Shadow Hearts: Covenant. From the New World gets mad props for that huge A-Team reference though.
BOF 4 is where it is at bro.
Nocturne
How's the combat system in that? It looks interesting but I've played so many RPGs it's hard for me to finish them unless the fights are really engaging or unique.
faris best girl next to rydia
hima's art for them is top tier
Ar Tonelico is lewd as fuck.
Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold
BOF4 is nice too, but I had more fun with BOF3.
knack
SaGa Frontier or one of the other SaGa games.
AT1 is standard JRPG fare for the most part, but it does have an interesting take on combat with the Song Magic component.
AT2 is fucking great though. Combat is broken up into attacking and defending, and both are mechanic rich. You can take 0 damage and whittle down superbosses at Lv1 (and are encouraged to do so) if you're good at the rhythm component to defending.
AT3 is pretty shit in terms of combat though. GUST didn't know what they were doing when they moved to 3D combat, and it plays like a shitty clone of a Tales game. Story and music is still good though.
I dont care which one is the best, but wild arms have the best intros
Candy crush
Kingdom hearts, bar none
I can respect that. Never got past the childhood part in BoF3. Maybe it is time to restart.
I have never played an RPG that didn't get me tired as fuck of the battle system by the end, at some point I start skipping all battles.
>For impact
FF7
>For gameplay
FFX-2
>being this autistic
No one suggested it had to be objective.
>It deconstructs the genre's standard tropes
Elaborate. I played it and didn't get this impression at all.
I think I'll give the first two a try at some point then, thanks. I already dislike Tales combat pre-shitty knockoff though, so I may have to youtube 3.
Chrono Trigger. It makes battling fun and rewarding. Oh yeah and every party member is great to have
Terranigma
Chrono nigger
Cute. I wanna marry her.
Modern world vs. medieval fantasy
PSI vs. Magic
Enemy variety of people, flora, fauna (with a scoopful of mysticism) vs. "We ripped off our bestiary from a DnD manual".
Simple things like that.
That's cool. I love 3 but I admit it's a slog and I wouldn't want to play it again.
Another series I can wholly recommend for SRPG fans is Ar Tonelico. It's actually even more of a VN than Ar Tonelico, but you can try it out via the 2006 anime series; good watch, and if you're keen for more just move on to "Mask of Deception" and "Mask of Truth" titles on Vita/PS4. Also has really good music, and a nifty Ainu visual theme.
Terranigger
>for SRPG fans is Ar Tonelico
Fucking brainfart.
Sorry, I meant to say "Utawarerumono".
I wish I played Earthbound when I was younger, the music has some really fucking nostalgia potential, it's such a charming game.
And I forgot my music link.

Final Fantasy IX.
Though this thread is full of great suggestions and much vidya discussion is inevitably prone to interpretation and opinion, any discussion relating to the best JRPG of all time has been rendered somewhat useless as FFIX has been scientifically proven to be the best JRPG ever made. Suikoden II comes very close, though.
Also really great:
>Suikoden III.
>Nier; the original beats out Automata slightly in terms of story, but falls shorter on almost everything else.
>Persona/SMT series, depending on which is your cup of tea. I love both.
>Xenoblade series
>Chrono Trigger/Cross
>Earthbound/Mother series. Mother III is fantastic.
But I want to marry you.
Then Neptunia series
Undertale.
Are you a cute girl with a wholesome personality, or a trap desperate for a slave?
Now here is an user of taste.
How is Under water ray amano 2?Is it as good as 1?
I'm a cute trap with a wholesome personality so neither sorry to disappoint.
Was the original Nier a headache for collecting items and getting endings?
>Cute trap
Bullshit
It was way worse.
Unironically Mario RPG.
There's nothing deconstructive about that. Also most JRPGs at the time, and in general, were science-fantasy.
I say SMT: Strange Journey or SMT: Nocturne. I lean towards SJ but bith are phenomenal.
Earthbound is maybe my persinal favorite game in general but it isn't truly phenomenal gameplay wise. It's great but not for everyone.
Same. Breath of Fire IV blew me away the first time I played it. I tried after Breath of Fire III which bored me and I expected nothing different but I was more hooked in the first few hours then I ever was in BoFIII. If only it was more difficult it would be my top jrpg maybe.
You must be new here. Dumb questions like this are used to filter out any posters who are interested in having intelligent discussion. Furthermore, by filling the catalog with low quality threads like this it encourages other new posters to lower the quality of their own posts.
Threads like this are constructed as part of an organized effort to kill Sup Forums, just to spite the few people who want to discuss video games.
Most consider 2 slightly worse than the original because it focuses on a younger cast (not inherently bad) and meanders a lot in culture and worldbuilding. But 3 starts right after 2 and cranks the war and politics up to eleven; and reaches the same emotional heights as 1.
If you're an Uta fan check them both out. Aquaplus also has a remake of the first game in the pipes, and there's much ado about some new project that's supposedly an action game.

What I hate about PS1 jrpgs are the fucking loading times, holy shit it keeps slowing down the rythm.
FF6
TWEWY
Chrono Trigger
No.
How about this instead? Do you like Earthbound now?
Persona 3 fes:
>Deep anime-like plot
>VN elements
>Pokemon elements
>Amazing soundtrack
>Great characters
>QT girls
>Rooted in Japanese culture with the mythology and the rural setting
More important question.
What JRPG has the best waifu cast?
Too bad about the gameplay.
when is Tomo coming back again?
Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals
Kamidori alchemy Meister
>What JRPG has the best waifu cast?
The one that still doesn't exist because none of the existing ones are full dive games.
t. sao babby.
The evidence would seem to suggest persona 4
Persona 4 has the worst female cast in jrpg history
Your favorite one, Lufia 2 for me
Probably true but the people who have posted about it for like a decade would disagree
based
soujinengi, every playable character is a cute girl
Too old.
