Is buying a gaming laptop worth it?
For $1000, pic related seems like a pretty good deal.

wrong board
>256 gb SSD
>No other hard drive
If you wanna put a ton of games in it, that space not be enough
If you want something cheaper get this
costco.com
It has a space for an 2.5 inch HDD or SSD, and you really arent going to notice the difference of the i5 vs i7 on games. I bought one back when slickdeals had a $150 rebate on top, making the laptop effectively $650 for me
These days, they're okay. Ultimately, depends how much you're going to be traveling. You won't get optimal performance, but it'll be fine. Battery life is going to be laughable.
If you're just going to be stationary with it, which is the usual state of a gaming laptop when gaming, get a desktop. Pre-fabs are the way to go for now until the memecoin bullshit stops inflating GPU prices.
What about this one, Sup Forums? I live in a closet in NYC so prebuilt desktops are out of the question.
Problem is, a touchpad is shit for games. Trackballs were great for fps games, but laptops haven't used trackballs since like the 90s unfortunately. So to play games on a lap top you have to set it on a desk and hook it up to a keyboard and mouse. If you're going to use a laptop as a desktop you might as well just buy a fucking desktop, it will be far cheaper. I don't know why you would ever buy a gaming laptop. Get a Switch if you want gaming on the go.
Find a company that will build you one.
For $1000 dollars you could get a more portable laptop and a more powerful desktop. Why have 1 computer that does everything badly when you could have 2 specialized computers that are good at specific things?
>gaming laptop
>256GB
when games are 60-100GB
Use a controller?
>Problem is, a touchpad is shit for games.
no shit faggot
>Gaming
>Laptop
No. Hard to service. At mercy of manufacturer if something goes bad. Overpriced for speed.
>Get a Switch if you want gaming on the go.
fuck off you fucking retard
If you have no other choices gaming laptop are fine but you need to pay extra attention to how well it can cool itself. I would rather go with a slightly bigger 1060/i5 laptop than a 1070/i7 in a thin case that will invevitably throttle itself to shit performances
>eluktronics
i mean, they cant even spell it right, what do you expect
but he's right tho u fucking faggot
Not OP but i work alot abroad, i bought a high end ASUS gaming laptop for when im stuck abroad for multiple months.
It runs all the newest games on high settings.
>High end laptops are all cringeworthy red&black pro gaymer shit
Cut my life into pieces.
externals
>Not OP but i work alot abroad
This is pretty much the only circumstance in which buying a gaymen laptop makes sense. Most Sup Forumsirgins making these threads just want to play PC games at home but are too lazy to read a guide on how to build a desktop.
>256GB SSD
No. Go look for one with a larger hard disc drive. The rest is fine though.
Yeah if you want underpowered gimped versions inferior to even the fucking the other console versions. It's extremely easy to plug in a controller on mouse and keyboard to a laptop.
Get the Acer Spin 5 instead of Nitro 5. Same performance anyway.
Fair enough. Although if I were to nitpic, having a hard drive outside of it might be annoying to have, but guess you could tape it on too
1060->1070 is a huge step up, save for it if you can
>get a switch for mobility
>”nah bro, just use a controller, even though that makes it immoble.”
lol not with the current desktop gpu prices, pal
This is what i fucking hate about dumbass normie stores, they never list the hardware brands or specific info about the clockspeeds.
>16GB DDR4 RAM
how many mhz? 1333mhz?
What fucking SSD brand, this is important as many SSDs have different features and failure rate.
the kids only care about the cpu and gpu. everything else is chinese bootleg models.
You could get with a larger drive. SSDs are nice but honestly not a necessity, the largest advantage it gives it much faster boot times but I wouldn't make the sacrifice of disc space for that.
With laptops, power draw is also a factor. SSD alone will give you a decent boost to battery life compared to an SSD+HDD combo.
OP is asking about laptop it's already obvious he is traveling with extended periods where he can sit it down. The Switch is for autistic manchildred who can't be away from their games for more than 5 seconds.
Good point but still there is a tradeoff at some point.
The most important thing for laptops to fix at this point is finding ones with good ventilation and cooling. Good hardware isn't worth it when it's constantly running at 100c+ for any game
They're all meme machines, OP.
The i7-7700HQ is a bigass bottleneck.
>Eluktronics
so basically a scam chink company that rebrands everything from prebuilt PCs and laptops, operates in China and assembles in the USA.
Overpriced, I agree. Hard to service is variable. Some manufacturers do make it a huge pain in the ass to open up the machine.
I use an old MSI laptop from 2014, but the design of it makes it relatively easy to open up and replace most parts. But like with any laptop (which credits your point), you're fucked when it comes to motherboard, processor and GPU configurations.
Still, screw laptop makers that don't even let you pop open the machine to change or clean the fan. You should always have access to that on a laptop. Same for RAM and HDD.
Desktop GPU and RAM prices do make gaming laptops a bit more viable these days, but I'd still get a desktop and a portable laptop. The main reason for me is that gaming laptop battery life is generally shit, not to mention they are generally heavy, which just makes them a chore to lug around to class all day. I went the desktop and chromebook route and haven't regretted it one bit. Get a chromebook with a decent processor and install linux for a dirt cheap windows laptop alternative with light weight and an all day battery.
Don't buy it, cleaning a laptop is bullshit
If you buy a gaming laptop you are gambling that money. A lot of things can go wrong with a computer and with laptops rarely can you actually fix the problem.
Graphics details are irrelevant on a 15" screen.
Any notebook with grahpics better than Intel integrated is good enough for games.
Gaymen notebooks are a scam.
>256GB SSD
I'd say it's worth it as long as you at least one external HDD and know how to open it and clean the dust that gathers all inside of it.
>external HDD
or he could just remove the optical drive, swap it out for a caddy and plug a 1TB secondary drive on it.
that's even better, but I doubt that people who asks if a "gaming laptop" is worth it on a korean kimchi network knows how to do it
You can overclock your laptop GPU but it will overheat your system and there is no efficient cooling system for internal laptop GPU. Unless you wanna buy an external GPU system for better cooling but then you should have really invested in a desktop if you are going that far.
No. Gaming laptops are shit. If you need a laptop for work just buy a decent, mediocre run of the mill laptop and call it a day. Gaming laptops will never be good, period, end of story, because overheat throttle will always eat up a third of that promised performance if not more and burn your fucking legs off while it's at it.
do those attachable laptop cooling systems not work?
No. I fell for the meme. I bought a asus reoublic of gamers laptop and it was so big and heavy to haul around. I just used it as a desktop now if you travel for work and stay in hotels not a bad idea. But if youre just at home no need for it
Unless you wanna waste money on something that sounds like a vacuum, they don't effectively do the job.
Yeah, at least where i live because electricity is unstable and we might lose power for a day or to sometimes
what did you mean by this?
I haven't seen this pic in years
What country is that?
Don't. Buy thinkpad + eGPU instead.
Lebanon
This. Then make sure to come over to Sup Forums and make a thread detailing just how disappointed you are with your thinkpad.
Dell is trash tho
If you like to go to lans or game in public I guess a laptop is better haha
There's an asus on there for around the same price with a proper hd, just add a ssd later what's the point if you can only fit your os and like 3 games on it at a time
The concept of 'gaming laptop' is retarded I think, I don't see myself playing games 'on the go', and anyone else i see playing them on the go are pretty sad.
Get a good desktop instead, make a nice gaming room where'it's easier to immerse yourself in the games your playing, play in the comfort of your own home with a nice chair and a proper screen.
Question: what's a decent pre built desktop?
>i dont like to do [thing] so everyone who does [thing] is a loser
arent you grown up
>haha
Goddamnit, I still fucking love this dumb ass pic.
So does that thing have a desktop 1060 6gb in it? Surely it's some mobile version
I've been hearing a lot about those NZXT BLD prebuilts. You pick the parts you want for MSRP and pay a flat fee for them to put it together.
I don't know a ton about it, so someone feel free to let me know if it's just a shill meme
trolled that libtard epic style! well done fellow kekistani.
You can do the same thing at a big number of online or offline retailers
It's usually a 20-80 currency fee for the assembly, with varying levels of competence but at the end the thing still werks and you pretty much get the best of both works- good hardware at a value price and you don't have to assemble it
nonononono don't buy an Acer, That was my laptop a year ago. I'm not tech savvy so I don't know the correct terms but the screen was horrible, it was like a bit of sun was glaring on it at all times and the audio when you use headphones or speakers is not great at all.
Butthurt janitor detected
Ah, I didn't know that, I don't really pay much attention to that kind of stuff. I'm still so used to pre-builts all just being inflated price Dell/HP pieces of crap.
do you travel a lot? if the answer is no, then no. You pay twice as much for half the power.
You are a fucking retard If you are buying this to play at home. "Laptops" are no match to the comfort and quality of a desktop, if you are not using a laptop to travel or to take it to places you are brainlet.
They're not worth it, coming from someone who spent 1000€ on a Lenovo Y50-70 a few years ago.
Shit battery life, bad performance (in games, for everything else it's decent desu), overpriced, absolutely no resale value because they barely handle any games released in the last few years. Mine can't even run GTA V or PUBG smoothly.
You're better off having a decent desktop and buying a normal laptop you can still play some old games on. Old games are better than anything released nowadays anyway /opinion
I'm actually looking into buying a Macbook Pro as my next laptop. They last much longer than regular laptops and have great resale value, not to mention how much more portable and reliable they are.
Building your own is always the cheapest option.
I have one because i need to bring it to school but if its going to stay home dont get it.
That thing has a 2,5" drive slot and exchanging an M.2 on a laptop isn't really much of a hassle at all.
Unless they dont provide those miniscrews
