That would imply Zelda games have a plot to begin with.

The boss is a fleshed-out character though. Or at least a weird hybrid of mentor/mother/partner tropes.

If you want an MGS character that is essentially a plot device, would the obvious answer not be Decoy Octopus?

Mary Sue

If Kojima wasn't Japanese, he'd be ridiculed like David Cage

O MY NANOMACHINES

That said The Boss was a very poor character in that she was introduced in MGS3 and then subsequently made out to be the center of the universe, despite never being mentioned in prior games.

>That said The Boss was a very poor character in that she was introduced in MGS3 and then subsequently made out to be the center of the universe
That's not true though, Big Boss is the central character, The Boss is just the origin story of all these elite soldiers.

I hate the Boss.
Just because of all the masturbation to her after 3. Doctor Strangelove HUNTED DOWN THE HORSE OF BOSS AFTER THE PLACE GOT NUKED, because she loved her so. And that horse of course outran the blast. And Strangelove of course did this whilst she was coding the most advanced AI ever in only a couple of years.
And all the shit that came about her in those tapes, where she basically was Jesus.

She had plenty of backstory but was really just there to drive the story forward and nothing else.

KINGDOM HEARTS IS

Don't forget she was Major Zero's motivation for become the patriots, even though they didn't share so much as a single conversation together in MGS3.

I thought they were replaced by a machine

But even then he'd still have a way to go before he reaches Press X to SHAAAUUUUUUUUUUUN

I think this is why a lot of people hate The Boss and why she gets interpreted as a Mary Sue. It's not The Boss's fault. It's Kojima's. Because every single conflict post-MGS 3 is the result of some asshole trying to interpret her will in some assbackwards justification to take over or destroy the world. Even though The Boss was just a soldier trying to carry out her mission. If Kojima didn't make every villain fetishize her then it would've still been convoluted and stupid but at least people might like The Boss more.
