I dunno how they missed this in Zero, really. Assault's versus was pretty great for what it was. And the SF series is practically made for co-op if it can get away from rails only.

Although it starts to sound a little like kirby - different game, same formula - the people want that formula. Starfox 64 was a great game, and I would go as far as to say even assault was good.
If the formula works, don't break it. Zero was well conceived but would have been a more solid title without the shoehorned motion. No gimmicks, (a "sequel" instead of a "new adventure/spinoff") and it should be on its way.
