Change my mind.
The souls series + bloodborne are overrated as fuck
Only DaS1 one is overrated
Bloodborne and DaS3 are gold
why dont you change your attitude dude
Why should I care what you think
Did you die?
is a freindly game
No
They arent bad games, they just do not deserve all of the fame and acclaim that they get.
Nah. My game taste isn’t some kinda religion I feel the need to convert others to. Just like what you like and move on.
I can't because you've already made up your mind and have provided no argument for anyone to pick apart or challenge.
"Overrated" is such a nebulous complaint there's no point in acknowledging it without some accompanying evidence or statement.
They are overrated. However, remember that overrated != bad
beep boop
Weve all died many of times. Suprisingly i never got twitch-level screamy ragey at these games, thought i would but i never did..
The coop is so ass backwards though. Its fun to play with friends but it doesnt need as much set up as it has. I get that its supposed to be a single player experience and friends are only for backup for bosses and such, but it wouldve been so much more enjoyable if people who join would have all their estus and could also use bonfires to replenish.
These boards are fueled on news, and opinions. This is an opinion thread.
I just want to know why hardcore souls-fans like the games so much. Ive dark souls 1, about half of dark souls 3, and about an hour of bloodborne at a friends house. They are fun but nothing spectacular. I agree, they are good, as you can see here I just feel like people respect them so heavily when they are really plain and at times, boring.
Didnt even get that far lmao
Tell me why I should
I mean, i suppose you dont have to.
I just want to hear why people love these games so much.
>I just want to know why hardcore souls-fans like the games so much.
Then you should've started your thread with this. Calling something overrated has very little value as a conversation starter, especially around here.
Lots of words to follow.
Not everyone is going to like every game, and not everyone is going to like every game to same degree. While this should go without saying, I think this truth lies at the heart of why some people like the franchise so much. The gaming industry at large has long since abandoned its Wild West roots for a more commodified approach to development. It used to be anything could be a game - not that everything was a game, or even a good game, but there was a certain freedom to experiment, to make the game you wanted to make, and if that alienated some people then so be it. Of course you could always play your cards wrong, alienate everybody, and make a game that didn't sell at all, but that was also part of the gamble. People often romanticize the past claiming older games to be universally better than new ones. While that's not even remotely true, what IS true is that that environment fostered the development of a lot of games (that may or may not have seen wide-spread success) that, when discovered by the right people, clicked like never before and nothing since. It's similar to the cult film phenomenon: films that see limited financial success but the people who like them LOVE them, and will continue to love them forever. Not everyone will get it, but the people who do get it really, really get it.

>DaS3 is gold
But the modern gaming industry is far more business-like and "Tactical" in its approach. Games are expensive to make, so it helps to ensure steady returns. Games are designed to have mass-market appeal, to have something for everyone at every level. Accessibility isn't necessarily evil in and of itself, and there are certainly games that have benefited from making themselves more accommodating to a broader audience, but in several cases this means the stripping out of features or content deemed alienating, whether due to difficulty, perceived confusion, or potentially problematic subject matter. What's more, there's been an increasingly loud collection of voices emanating from the game-playing public who WANT everything to be for everyone, at every skill level, within every interest group. No one should be denied any game, even if those people aren't going to play some kinds of games ever in their lives; the door must always be left open to them.
The Souls series - in particular Demon's Souls, but also Dark Souls - represented a push back against this sort of bland equalizing. They were games that were hard, yes, and obtuse also, but the difficulty in playing and understanding them was never the point in and of itself. The point was these were games that did their own thing, and they weren't worried about whether or not everyone was going to like them. Some people would play them and bounce off hard, and the game was alright with that, because it meant other people would sink in and play them forever.
That's why the people who like the game so much like it so much. It's more noticeable though because these games don't exist in a vacuum, but against the backdrop of other releases that are still the same mass-marketed malarkey. It's not that Souls fans are particularly MORE vocal as much as it is the fans of a lot of other modern franchises have less reason TO be vocal.

Part of the acclaim is that they're designed around negative reinforcement/constant fail states/git gud when the industry is constantly moving in the other direction. Which brings up memeories of when vidya was designed around making the player die as often as possible to get more quarters out of them, which carried over in to home systems until a marketing exec realized during gen 7 that positive reinforcement/moviegames sell better.
Other than that, they are very competent to great 3rd person arpgs that nailed a tight 3D combat system. Aesthetically nice as well.
You are on Sup Forums, every game that has even a fraction of a following is gonna get shit on and the only games that won't are obscure games that didn't succeed. if they did succeed they would also get shit on
One of the most accurate summaries of the souls series I've ever read.
Well done user. For a moment I thought I was reading pasta, because constructive posts like these have become a rarity on Sup Forums. Also kudos to you for not glorifying Souls. The games are not particularly great, they are just their own things and that's the appeal due to market being so fucking flanderied. You put the bullshots from fps games released in the last six or seven years side to side and it will look like they're a single fucking game with some very minor exceptions. I'd only like to clarify that Dark Souls didn't really represent a pushback so much as it became a representative of it and there is a difference. Japanese just like making games they would like to play themselves.
>Bloodborne and DaS3 are gold
nah fuck off the Souls + Bloodborne games have all been some of the best games to come out in the past few years
even the weaker titles are better than 90% of every other video game
Thank you for the detailed and lengthy response. I never really looked into it that deep, i was mostly just focusing on the core gameplay and structure of the game itself. I guess even if a game is simple and plain at times, theres a deeper meaning behind its popularity and attraction. But im a simple person, and i tend to only focus on the game that i am controlling and i still cant see dark souls' gameplay deserving its place in video game culture.
But when it comes to "my opinion" youve certainly altered it, or rather, youve made me see the bigger picture.
Im gonna leave the thread now, have a nice night everyone.
This has been a known issue in every iteration of the souls series. What's next? you're going to post a video of someone falling off an inclined surface in BB and lie about how it doesnt happen in DeS, 1 or 2?
Well I mean...You're correct, so...
t.Soulsbaby
Was these your first "hard" games?
>This has been a known issue in every iteration of the souls series.
>That means its fine
