I am of the opinion that Animal Parade is probably the best in the series, followed by Mineral Town. I never played 64, though, which I know is the nostalgic fave of a LOT of people.
The games out right now are all basically upgrades of A New Beginning, so if you weren't big on that one, SoS and SoS 3oT are both just polished versions of that (though I loved ANB and 3oT, I didn't really like SoS at all with its dumb vendor system).
You can always nab FoMT or MFoMT from the VC shop (or emulate it).
I'm excited for the eventual Switch version.

Back when I played them, I preferred ToT to AP for some reason I can't put my finger on. I think AP might have neutered the personalities of the villagers a bit, not to mention its premise was dumber. It definitely had some good gameplay tweaks though.

I'm a weird who enjoyed the chores and balanced gameplay between all the activities. Excessive QoL changes to shit like gathering all the crops in a single move, turning up the focus too much on dating sim, etc just put me off on the series.

ToT has a very different feel than AP. ToT was a faster paced clock, and it was a bit more melancholy, which was reflected in the villagers. AP was more cheerful and went at a more leisurely pace, the tradeoff being that it sometimes dragged. But I gotta go with AP, if you have enough time to dedicate to it/don't mind sleeping at like 6 o'clock, it's pretty much the best the franchise has to offer.

I like almost all of the games, but there are definitely things I don't like about the new ones. I think there are way too many crops now with way too many stats to keep track of. There are so many animals too which wastes time. The best balance of gameplay vs other activities was the FoMT games, in my opinion.
I feel like the newer games are trying to give players more stuff to do post marriage, and some of it works but some of it is meh. I really appreciate the upgrades to the dating sim side though, I like that some heart events are AFTER the two of you are dating.

Hell no, I'm married to Ludus and his events were lots of fun, especially grossing him out by calling him "big bro." All spouses get boring after marriage, that isn't Ludus exclusive. That's just because there needs to be more dedicated post-marriage dialogue.

I'm still a bit salty about tale of two towns. I think that game had real potential with its gameplay innovations, separation of animal/crops and one of the better casts of villagers. But hot damn, in the end it just made you run left and right around that mountain all day, preferably catching all bugs along the way..

This series is far from dead. You can buy the very shitty Natsume "Harvest Moon" on steam but stick to consoles for the actual Bokujo experience. One's coming out on Switch too.

Ford was my go to at first. He's cute when he gets to light green flower. But during my current play though, I can't choose between my sick boi or actor boi. I found Ludus to boring and his whole 'hey girl I like, you're like a sister to me' turned me off.

Ford has some great dialogue and is a great choice. With regard to Ludus, in one of the events before you date him, he is very visibly repulsed when you start calling him big bro and he's like "ew no never mind." Which of course leads him to being all "oh shit this sure isn't familial attraction then." I also really liked the event where you hang out in his room and it culminates in him kicking you out due to his raging boner. He's not for everyone but I certainly liked his events, made me proud to escape the "like-a-sister" zone.
Between Hinata and Yuzuki, I personally prefer Yuzuki because he is sweetness personified; he was my second choice. I heard Hinata gets very possessive after dating and marriage, which some people liked and some didn't.

Yuzuki seems to be the sweetest out of all of the characters just because he's fragile but acts like nothing is wrong. I really have a hard time choosing between the two of them honestly. Hinata is really funny. Ford is quiet but romantic in a weird way. But never Wayne. He's a slut.
My biggest harp with the game is still that you get married and your husband goes to your house and then they stay there even after they get out of work. Like I want to go on dates and have tons more end game dialogue.

Go for Ford if you want the most character development + backstory. Go with Yuzuki for beauty and sweetness. Go for Hinata if you like a guy that's crazy about you and a little bit possessive. Barring that, just look at their events on youtube and see who you like best.
The DLC added some post marriage dialogue, but not enough. I wish they kept the trips that ANB had, I used to take Sanjay on trips all the time.
I'm going for Kasumi once I get a guy file started. And agreed, I hope they keep cooking effects in the next game, need my slowed time and speed increases.

I actually do play True Love on my phone, which is good because when I was young and playing MFoMT, they kept the dialogue of the girls the exact same and kept in their first heart events so little me had a huge crush on Elli.
But it'd be nice to just have all of the options open from the get go. And crossdressing isn't the same when all of the dialogue in the newer games is totally different depending on whether you're a boy or girl.

The general consensus is that RF4 for the 3ds is the best Rune Factory experience, and I can understand why. I didn't play much of RFF or the other Wii RF game, but I thought RFF was fun, I just didn't get as deep into it as RF4. Still seems to be nicely polished.

I think y'all have convinced me to go with Yuzuki. But then Hinata... I really can't decide. I never thought I'd have a hard time choosing a husband. I have a hacked DS so I might go for both and have two different save files to see which one I like best. I like the surprise of not knowing what will go on when it progresses.
Another thing that turned me off to Ludus is because be never smiled much. His default is so gruff.

The portrait thing was weird to me too, since he clearly wasn't a gruff person, as was how dark his character model was vs. how much lighter his skin is in the portrait. It didn't match at all.

the game gets better as you go on, i adored RF1 and didn’t play another tune factory after until i got my hands on RF4 which took me a little to warm up too but eventually i came to really enjoy it and it’s characters!

There's quite a few characters you haven't met yet, and RF4 has the most dialogue compared to the others, so that's a bit strange. Give it a little time right now but if they don't click, they don't click.

Rune Factory Frontier is great but it dies on its chores with the Runeys which is something you have to start on early and never let up on in your pure efficiency.
I like Komari the most but I haven't decided yet either, there's reasons to like both the twins once they warm up to you and the fox deity has its perks too, one of the hardest sells for me as far as picking someone. The only other one I had a hard time picking someone in was Rune Factory Frontier but I settled for one of the vampires in the end.

Correct, the very last true game with the "Harvest Moon" label was Harvest Moon: A New Beginning. Following that, there was Story of Seasons for the 3ds and Story of Seasons: Trio of Towns also for the 3ds. Currently waiting with bated breath more information about the confirmed Switch installment.

Well, have you had the first few love events with each girl? Usually the events sway me one way or the other. And you can look at the dating locked events on youtube if you're still unsure.
I like Kasumi best, but the girls are all pretty good, so I feel you on being stuck.
